The fastest ever tries scored from the kickoff
The guys at the Super 14 highlights show on Sky Sports put together a little bit about the quickest tries ever after Lionel Mapoe scored one after 20 seconds against the Bulls recently.
They then showed some of the other fastest tries on record, including Keegan Daniel's 16 second effort against the Blues in 2008, and Vula Maimuri of the Highlanders scoring after just 12 seconds against the Crusaders way back in 2001.
The focus then turned to the try that they thought was the quickest ever, as Tom Voyce scored after 9.63 seconds against Harlequins in 2004 as (in studio guest) Will Greenwood dropped the ball from the kickoff.
As you'll see though, they got it wrong as they totally forgot about Lee Blackett's effort for Leeds Carnegie against Newcastle in 2008, coming in at an incredible 8.28 seconds.
There was another very quick try that was scored by John Leslie for Scotland against Wales in 1999, but that was over nine second if memory serves correctly, so we think we've got it right.
Does anyone know of any officially quicker than Blackett's though?

Nice reaction from greenwood :)
With a big boot in the sky, some wind and a seek bounce u will have some 5-6 seconds tries. For sure!
Any compilation on rugby tries missed? Carling, Dominici, Umaga made some incredibles ones ! ;)

i thought elton flatley held the record for fastest super rugyby try??
Greiffel April 09, 2010 4:23 pm
"Centre Elton Flatley scored the fastest try in World Cup history on Saturday to inspire Australia to a 90-8 victory over Romania.
Flatley raced over the Romania line just 18 seconds into the pool A match after hooker Brendan Cannon had driven the ball deep into the opposition half."
That was in an international, and 18 seconds. Unless there was another one I'm not aware of in Super Rugby.

in my early moving up from colts to senior rugby days, (3-4 few years ago) i didnt get a try off the kickoff, but a restart....and that was quick...if i dont say so myself....
well it was our restart, our flyhalf hoisted the ball highish...and i was chasing, (looking for the absolute smash if im totally honest..) and their flanker either saw me coming, wasnt concentrating, or something, tried to bring the ball down with his foot, and to my shock i just kicked it, and chased it, and low and behold it landed over the try line, and i dived on it....
so yeh, off a restart not a kickoff, but it was my highlight of my man of the match game :)
......and im a second row...

During Five Nations 1998 or 1999, Wales against Scotland, a Scottish scored a try in 8-9 seconds after the kick off...

I don't think anyone can score in under 8 seconds.

I scored the night before kick-off once but I've lost the video. I'll have another look for it.

i got sent off after 10 seconds once.... and in front of my poor mum too.... they kicked off to us. just as our 2nd row was about to receive under not too much pressure a spectator nailed him in the face with his mobile phone.... what an idiot!
I was standing too close not to do anything and with a few lefts started a mass brawl! had to go to a hearing and all. we tape all our game luckily and the club president is a lawyer so with him speaking on my behalf and the footage i got a 2 match ban. Have to laugh at it looking back.

You could create a highlights package just from Brock James' bad misses.

Yes, Guetteba, it was mentioned in the post - "There was another very quick try that was scored by John Leslie for Scotland against Wales in 1999, but that was over nine second if memory serves correctly, so we think we've got it right."

john leslie scored from the kick off against wales a few years ago, that might be quicker than the ones on the video
Tingi April 10, 2010 11:44 am
Fourie du Preez scored in 16 seconds against the All Blacks from a charge down in 2006.
Aiyayai April 10, 2010 3:46 pm
Sam, you really should read the write up, and if not that at least read the comments above yours. I mean, the one directly above yours quotes that it was in 9 seconds.

To score a try from kickoff, someone has to run at least 50M (from midfield to try line)
world class (track & field) speed in the 100m is around 9.5-10 seconds. That same guy might make the 50m (with a running start before the dropkick, and rugby kit) at around 5 seconds.
add in the body mechanics of changing from an upright sprinter's position to grounding the ball in the try zone, and its physiologically impossible for anyone to score in rugby in less than 6 seconds.

By saying and "rugby kit", I mean that a Usain Bolt type runs the 100m in under 10 secs, but wearing a tank top and racing shoes. Running on grass (rather than an athletics track) and wearing rugby boots and kit, would surely slow a player down.

I'm not sure if it was quicker, but there was a try scored against the Hurricanes from a charged kick immediately after the kickoff at the Cake Tin between 2006-2008.
Also, I was reading about a bunch of these in one of Keith Quinn's books on the weekend. I'll have a check tonight and see what I can find.

cheyanqui summed stuff up quite well....although i do tend to hang back slightly from the line and run at the line just before the fly half kicks the ball....that way i cross it as he kicks it and im at full speed....(not great acceleration but good speed for a second row!)...well...obviously i vary this tactic...i.e if i know its going deep i tend to not bother, as id rather let the no good lazy flankers and 8 get involved!!! shorter ones where i can crush an oppo player just catching the ball, or recover it, then i use the technique.....(tend to go more for the crush tactic though...)

Blackett's must be the fastest, I bet Leeds would give anything for a few quick trys like that during the Guinness run in this season!!

Why does everyone forget Leeds? Excellent try from Blackett and that irritating drumming sound in the background was made by me! :)
