The Chiefs fade as the Bulls power on to win in Hamilton
The Bulls bounced back well from their first defeat of the season to the Blues a week ago, picking up their first ever win in Hamilton and reclaiming the number one spot at the top of the table.
The defending champions are now four points ahead of the Crusaders and Waratahs, who are one point ahed of the Stormers. It looks like thatll be the four that contend the semis, but there are still five rounds left and we could yet see a few surprises.
Skipper Victor Matfield described the match as a great victory for the touring Bulls.
"It's always great to win in New Zealand. It's the toughest place to tour in the world, so we're happy with the performance tonight," said Matfield. "The guys today showed a lot of character. They wanted to come back and they showed it out there. They just gave their all."
It was the fourth loss in five outings for the Chiefs, pushing them further down the table with a few big matches still ahead of them, namely against the Stormers, Cheetahs, Hurricanes, Waratahs, and Blues.
"The boys were there mentally and physically. The Bulls are a class side and punished us in the end," said captain Liam Messam said, admitting it had been a tough night for his injury ravaged team, despite them being competitive for a good 60 minutes.

Bit of a shitty penalty to bring back a try, but the ref/touch judge was totally right in calling it.
Great game to watch, though.

This was a great game btw. It felt closer than what the scoreline suggests, but the Bulls powered away late in the game. Until then it was back and forth. FDP is absolute class. What a player.

There would have been roughly 10 to 12 thousand people there, about the same average crowd as a Stade Francais game.
The stadiums are just bigger down here than in Europe.

That was a one off game.
Their regular stadium only holds 10,000 people.
The S14 crowd average is 20,000.
No other league in the world gets an average that high.
The next highgest is the Heineken Cup, which sits around 15,000 per game.
Euro rugby stadiums are often filled but it's because they're so small.
Tiny little 10,000 and 15,000 seat stadiums.
We don't play in tiny little stadiums like that down south much.

Pity for the fans, since going off what is seen on camera and the normal SH defense (that the stadiums are huge), the fans must be sitting way up top. I'd rather go sit in a packed 10,000-seater where I at least get to see the game than way up high.
Of course, I can't say that's what always happens since I'm not from the SH, so maybe you do get a good view of the game.

Not exactly scientific is it?
A better way to do it might be to go to a website, there's gotta be plenty of them out there with the info, and look up the stats for attendance and then look up the total capacity of the stadium the game was held in.
EG Auckland Blues play in a stadium that holds about 60,000, the Waratahs play in a 45,000 seater, the Bulls play in a 50,000 seater, the QLD Reds play in a 53,000 seater etc.
Think about that, even if the Reds get 20,000 to a game, that's more than half the seats still empty.
So you're gonna see more seats then people in the crowd.
In regards to your preferance for playing in small stadiums, fair enough.
It just doesn't really happen down south.
There are reasons for that.
Alot of teams sign long term deals with these bigger stadiums, because a few times a year they'll get large crowds so they need the capacity.
In South Africa games often get 40 or 50 thousands people turning up, paricularly the South African derby matches.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter why, it's just the way it is.
It's funny actually, because i couldn't be happier that European rugby clubs now get big crowds.
It's good for the game.
The spite and bitterness you get from northern rugby fans is incredible, it's as though you want the S14 to get smaller crowds.
The truth of it is that it comes from the inferiority complex that northern rugby has.
If you lot didn't lose so much to us, you wouldn't have to constantly have to find reasons why S14 is so shit - ie defence is no good, crowds aren't good enough, no atmosphere at games blah blah etc.
It's just bitterness really.
It's obviously a better standard of rugby in the S14, which is why it produces the best players and coaches.
