Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 9
There were plenty of tries scored in round nine, with a few high scoring matches meaning that gaps were opening up all over the place, mainly thanks to the Cheetahs and the Lions, whove both struggled this season with their defensive structures.
At the top of the table its the Bulls who arent looking their best while on the road, but still managed to beat the Cheifs with a nice try from Gerhard Van Den Heever thats included here. Check out the neat flick from Morne Steyn that gets him through the gap.
The Reds scored four tries in the opening 16 minutes against the Lions at Ellis Park, as they notched up a 41-26 win as Quade Cooper once again marshalled the troops and continued in his rich vain of form. The Lions didnt give up though, scoring a few tries themselves, including one for Michael Killian from a neat Carlos Spencer special.
The Stormers were really impressive as they brushed aside a Blues side that a week earlier had beaten the Bulls. Jaque Fourie scored a great try from a Gio Aplon breakout, and Joe Rokocoko also crossed after a great interchange with Isaia Toeava. Keep an eye out for Toeavas huge hand off on Stormers flanker Francois Louw.
The Brumbies dominated the Cheetahs in Canberra as they scored nine tries on their way to a 61-15 win. There were plenty of tries to choose from, but Rocky Elsom and Alfi Mafi get theirs included here as the Brumbies let loose with some great attacking rugby.
One of the best tries of the weekend though would have to be the one scored by Fetuu Vainikolo for the Highlanders against the Force. The hard running winger has had many tries ruled out this season by the TMO, and it seems like everytime he scores these days, its referred. This time he got it down though, despite being airborn and outside the field of play. Sensational.
Enjoy this weeks compilation, and be sure to check out the link on the sidebar that now allows you to easily view previous weeks tries. Or you can go there now if youd like.

Some great tries there, though. Thanks for the video, RD.

The Lions play at Ellis Park - 59 000 capacity before world cup upgrade. 70 000 after that (not sure if it's done yet). If 20 000 are in there, its going to look empty on tv. Same goes for the Chiefs stadium, although that's only 25 000 but to fill it when the side is under performing isn't easy.
The match in Queenstown was a once off. I'm not sure the reason for it but take that one with a pinch of salt.
Dont forget also that the tv coverage in SA, NZ, and I think Aus too, is really good. Every single Super 14 match is shown live, with repeats and highlights channels, unlike the Guinness Prem etc in Europe/UK.

Hackney Griffin April 16, 2010 10:00 am

the defences seem to have tightened up a little from the opening weeks. With the notable exception of the Lions.
Quade looks like a terrific player. Which is irritating as Australia were desperate for a player to work alongside Giteau and get their backline purring... they seem to have a knack for the right players at the right time.
JoeyJoeJoe April 16, 2010 12:47 pm

Some great stuff though! I'm not looking forward to the Oz backline at the world cup Hackney Griffin is right, they always seem to pull it together at the right/wrong time. UP THE BOK!

And they should've had a pen. from the restart for that nasty shoulder charge in the build up.
No arms used at all!!

I know poor defense has a part to play too.

Edinburgh seem to receive no support at all, even if they're 'doing well' in the Magners.
As a Blues fan i can tell you that the move to the new legobrick stadium has resulted in fewer attendances and no atmosphere. We didn't want to move in the first place. Also the performances put in by Cardiff have been extremely poor. Thank God we signed the brilliant ex-Super 14 'star in the making' Norton-Knightmare.
What an awful season for the Blues.. Loosing plenty of fans, good players, and easy games.

-SH weather/pitches make for better running rugby
-The defence doesnt seem as good in the SH
All said and done, i still think SH is still way ahead.

That's the rule everywhere. That's why the try was awarded. It used to be that the post was considered touch, but now, it's not.

Re: tackling. Yeah, it's a different mode of play, but seriously, the Lions made some 60+ tackles, compared to 20+ missed! So, 1/4 of all tackle attempts were unsuccessful. You just can't win games like that, when other teams are only missing <10% of their tackles.

...cool your jets, kid. No one is going off the handle complaining about the defense. In fact, the people who have mentioned it being slightly insufficient have also, in the same statement, acknowledged the amazing attacking and running game that is the Super 14.
The general perception seems to be that S14 is, in general, slightly less concerned with defense than they are with offense. That's probably true. Not always the case, but there's still probably some substance to that thought.

I think the point is not that the SH is "less concerned with defence" but that they have to deal with much more relentless and creative attacking rugby that will regularly stretch even the best defence. What these highlight videos don't show are the numerous full-on attacks that get stopped by well organised and tough defence, and there's plenty of it.
Do the hustle April 17, 2010 2:09 am

Yeah, I'd agree with that.
luxi April 17, 2010 3:34 pm

thanks rugbydump
2questions : giteau was playin 12, so who was 10 for the brumbies ??
and secondly, blues-stormers : rokocoko gets chased down and tackle by stormers number 12, and i seem to hear the commentator say "habana", was he playin centre?? (i doubt it, but just checkin)
Greiffel April 17, 2010 3:44 pm

About the #12 tackling Rokocoko, it was actually Juan De Jongh. They also claimed that it was Jaque Fourie who Toeava handed off, but it was actually Francois Louw. Not one for the Tony Johnson highlight reel.
Huh!! the 3rd April 17, 2010 6:58 pm

And Cooper looks incredible this season. Barnes leaving heaped more responsibility on him but he's playing the best attacking rugby in the S14. Australia really are strong in the 10-12 slot.
kevdetoulouse April 17, 2010 8:56 pm

But I agree on qualifying poor defense in a few tries.
Seems some teams don't know how to put pressure and stay in line on kicking balls

When an All Black misses a tackle, it's probably because the guy he was trying to tackle was damn good.
Funny how All Blacks find it alot easier to tackle NH players.
Maybe if NH players knew how to offload or beat a tackle they might win more games against SH teams.
Anonymous April 19, 2010 1:57 am

Cheetahs, and how they concede points all the time in S14, this the same team that almost beat the B&I Lions!
They went better against the best of the NH then they do against anyone in S14.
Because NH players are shithouse.
Tommo April 19, 2010 2:00 am

He will almost certainly mdisplace Matt Gitaeu for Australia's no 10 shirt this year and probably for the World Cup and Gitaeu will go back to inside centre.
Personally I think that position suits Gitaeu more anyway, because he has such a dangerous running game and inside centre gives him more space to work.
Either way Australia is looking good for the WC.
World Class front trow and back row, awesome backline with plenty of depth. Our only problem is our second row is not the best atm, but it's still decent with Nathan Sharpe playing well and Mumm really stepping up this year.
Jono April 19, 2010 2:07 am

That rule has changed, a while ago.
As long as you don't touch the ground outside the lines you are still in, the corner flag doesn't matter.
In fact, they should probably get rid of it altogether.
This is true everywhere in the world of rugby.
Contrary to the ridiculous propoganda the papers in the NH come out with, the game is played under the same rules all around the world.
It just looks different down soputh because we play with more ambition, skill and ability.
It has always been this way.

Toeava's fend was mean, he has become such a good fullback.
AB no. 15 for sure with Mills injured.
Tui April 19, 2010 3:48 am

Pitty the rest of the team aren't up for it... I hope the Lions get 1 win this season.
