Toulon go top with good win over Perpignan

Toulon go top with good win over Perpignan

Toulon went ahead of Perpignan at the top of the Top 14 standings this weekend after they beat them 33-23 in an intense match at the jam-packed Stade Veledrome in Marseille.

Flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson was instrumental in the win as he kicked 23 points, including two drop goals, five penalties, and a conversion. One of his drops was from about 50 meters out, and is included in the clip as part of his interview.

Luke Rooney scored twice in the first half with both Joe Van Niekerk and Sonny Bill Williams providing the impressive assists that set him up to canter over. Williams himself has had interest shown in him from New Zealand, who will likely attempt to lure him back before the 2011 World Cup.

Perpignan scored a great try of their own, with Farid Sid going over after some excellent handling from the backs. It wasnt enough though as Wilkinson punished them in the second half and the champion Catalan side went home with nothing.

This clip features most of the tries in the match, and includes a French interview with the battered looking Wilkinson, who took a few big knocks from Gavin Hume.

Who is the guy standing behind wilko in the changing room? He keeps showing off to the camera! Good to see rugby hasn't lost it's amateur spirit!
I bet the french enjoyed watching that replay of him being smashed over and over... legendary player, probably the first fly half ever interviewed with a mark on his face!

i don't know if toulon will win the top 14, but they are serious outsiders vs clermont and Toulouse.
St Andre bring his tactics, boudjellal bring the money and it works!

a special word on wilko, a great respect for him to speak in french, and he speaks quite good!
"reprendre le train" :)

Toulon look good this year. hey may lose Rooney and Williams which would be a blow! However, would love to see Sonny Bill stick an All Black jersey on!

By the way to all French fans, there is absolutely no need for you to apologise for your 'bad' English. You're doing fine! Respect to you for being able to speak our language as well as your own! We should all follow Johnny's example and know some French I think!

Wilko has never played in the HC.
It would be nice if he finally fulfill that with Toulon.

Alexander > The majority of British kids can barely string a sentence together in English let alone French, don't confuse them. :P

I regularly see foreigners using better English than my fellow Brits, on football forums especially.

Toulon is Real Madrid in the rugby world. There are some negative things about that, but this club make a good job for the growth of rugby in France.
Wilko speaks french absolutely well !!! He even uses french typical expressions. big player, big man, big respect.
ASM for the title!

If all Top 14 clubs had as many foreign players as Toulon, what would happen with the french national team ? However it is a great victory at Toulon, this club has brilliant players. The match between Toulon and the USAP was beautiful: beautiful game, sun, combat, and a large and passionate public (it look play off match). Sorry my English is not as good as the Wilkinson's french ;)

Wow, Toulon is at the top? That's pretty awesome. And good to see Wilkinson, SBW, and Umaga playing well for them. Seems that in England, people actually think Wilkinson should be left out of fly-half in favor of someone young like Toby Flood....

It's the same problem that seems to plague English test rugby all around - the GP has some great players and great tries, but once they suit up in their country's jersey, they just can't seem to win.

Maybe the extra competition from Flood will have a Sexton/O'Gara effect and the older Wilkinson will ramp up his game to keep his spot.

One query for rugbydump - is there any chance you could not put the result of the game in the heading. I'm one of those guys who hates knowing the outcome before I watch it!

Lol at the guy at 1.40

enough of the love in. Toulon are part of the problem, not the solution.

And no, they are not helping Rugby in France develop. Even Clermont have a balance of sorts. That balance is part of building rugby. All foreign players turns the whole thing into Harlam globtrotters.

Wilko and SBW were all class... Good game to watch (I haven't enjoyed a few top 14 games recently, too slow) but this was sweet.

Don't worry about french rugby, the french federation is working on it. They're going to restrain percentages of foreigners in all teams for next year, hopefully!!
I hope it will not prejudicate talented players as Wilko, even if he's out of reach.
It will be nice to see a good HC season with Toulon and it will show all Newcastle's fan that Wilko did the good choice. He needed a change for his career.

There's may be Dan Carter but it's another type of player.
Not so good tackler but better in the game. Like Carlos Spencer, a master-class player as well.
