Midweek Madness - Jerry Collins' slightly misdirected hit
The match included the excellent try from Zee Ngwenya and ultimately ended in a missed dropkick and a referee call that many felt was completely incorrect, thus resulting in Ospreys exit from the competition.
Perhaps Jerry Collins knew it wasnt going to be a great game for him as fairly early on in the first half he made one of the hits of the season, despite the Biarritz player not having the ball and being nowhere near the action.
The clip was requested by a few guys who wanted to see it again, not only for a chuckle, but simply because it was quite bizarre how far off the ball it was. One can only think that Collins stuck his head down and committed himself to the hit very, very early on.
He was penalised only, and upon reflection, was perhaps lucky to get away with just that. Luckily injured flyhalf Julien Peyrelongue (edit) recovered after a few minutes strewn on the turf.

This was quite dangerous and Jerry Collins could have avoided, he must have seen the guy did not receive the ball.
Not so surprised, Collins is always near the limit for most of his tackles. For me, he should have got a Yellow for this...

Collins must have an anti-french conspiracy thing going on;

has anyone seen Caucau tries with Agen during the week-end? Deserve to be watched! The guy is over 130kg now and he was playing at centre. Two 50m tries, not as quick as before but still a fair pace!Amazing for such a big guy. He is bigger and look less fit than any prop though!

....i would say he fell for the dummy and saw the big hit so he put it in....
i dont think he realised the ball was no where near...
ofcourse i am only going by this footage, if anyone finds a close up then i guess it will help prove/disprove...
i assume it wasnt a yellow because of the sheer 'accidentalness' of it....Collins must have fallen for the dummy and i suppose that was taken into consideration....
but a yellow wouldnt have surprised me...
(didnt see a knee in the spuds either.....Peyrelongue missed out!)

it was obviously nowhere near the ball, but that what defenses are like, you line up man for man and expect them to get the ball, all teams do it, just looks bad here cause he stays down.

Commentator says "he was committed to the tackle". Problem is that so many players these days commit themselves to make a massive hit well before they should.
The ball is 1-2 passes away from his man, and Collins has already put his head down. He can longer see how the play has developed.
The defender is "going for" the hit, at the expense of actually seeing the game. This needs to be punished across the game.
Should have been a yellow on the pitch. Off the pitch, this should have been reviewed by the citing committee, and put on Collins's "permanent record". Not saying a suspension, but there for future punishment. If he had similiar prior incidents -- then perhaps a suspension is worthy.
As Tana said, it ain't tiddly winks. But off-the-ball is off-the-ball.

But really Jerry, shut up and take the penalty, you could have had worse. If you hit that hard when you're pulling out, you need to pay more attention and pull out much earlier!

I think it looked strange in real time because how far away the tackle occurred from where the ball ended up going, but Traille's motion made it look like it could've gone wide - he just saw the coverage and did a quick one on the inside.
I thought the ref got it fine. Collins isn't a malicious player (big hitter, though, for sure) - not that that matters when making a call, though. In the end, Biarritz won, so I'm happy.
Just a funny-looking off-the-ball tackle is all. Weird, but not that bad.

Sanction: Penalty kick
(f) Playing an opponent without the ball. Except in a scrum, ruck or maul, a player must not
hold, push or obstruct an opponent not carrying the ball.

Read your rule book guys.
I don't think a yellow card should have been awarded, worse than it looked. But definitely a penalty, without a doubt.
(u-p)rick April 21, 2010 9:48 pm

although i must add, that 'Rule' book is not set in stone, if it warrants it a referee can issue a card!
A yellow card for this wouldnt have been a surprise, but i wouldnt say it was particularly deserved of a yellow.
i mean, as far as im aware collins has never been associated with foul play, (well not as much as the next player!) and generally appears to have kept his nose clean throughout his career. Perhaps referee's are aware of this...perhaps this shouldnt come into play in decisions...
anyway, not dirty, just daft, *Midweek Madness* sums it up well....
Dalma April 21, 2010 10:08 pm

... so you mean that every yellow cards given after late tackles are illegal ? Very clever.

He was commited, the guy was running a line and Collins ahd to go for the hit.
The French guy dived and rolled around like a pansy too, trying to milk the penalty.
It's not dangerous, it's nothing.
The French guy is a dick for making it out to be worse.

the one where the ball didn't come to you~
Anonymous April 22, 2010 10:53 am

I suppose that would be the case if new zealand was actually top class....
Anyway, there is no reason to shrug off a yellow for this hit... im not saying it deserved one but it could easily be one. The hit was fine, had the player been holding the ball everyone would be fine, but it is the fact there was no contact with the ball, or the phase of play (i.e he didnt catch or pass the ball at all, he wasnt a dummy runner as such etc) therefore the fact the 'tackle' was of a legal nature (the actual tackle itself) has nothing to do with it, not really anyway....
so the referee could have gone for yellow...
I assume it is because the 'tackle' was 'legal' that collins wasnt sent off...high tackle and i would expect a yellow....
decky100 April 22, 2010 5:10 pm

just kidding, though there must be something in the name Jerry...first Flannery then Collins. what were they thinking?
Sam April 22, 2010 7:25 pm

i think we have found the source of this french conspiracy decky...
like you say, first flannery and now collins...and both on french players...
hmmm anyone know if the citing and ban commissioners are called jerry?
(and as for your NH SH comment...well flaaaaaannnery did it properly, got the french chap off the field...lol) (not that i condone injuring other players...)
