Big hits from the top two teams on the Top 14 table

Big hits from the top two teams on the Top 14 table

Perpignan and Toulon are now both top of the French Top 14 table after good wins in their matches this afternoon. To go with that, we've got the big hits from their recent clash, the same match that was featured earlier in the week .

Toulon and Perpignan are now both on 80 points, but the Catalans are ahead due to a better points difference, with their 44-0 win over Albi contributing towards that. Toulon on the other hand had to fight for their nailbiting 26-23 win over Brive at the Stade Amedee-Domenech.

In the featured video here now though, we go back a week and bring you the best of the physicality from the two sides when they met in Marseille, and Toulon came out tops 33-23.

You can see monster Henry Tuilagi smash Toulon captain Joe Van Niekerk twice in this clip, with the one hit being absolutely huge at the back of the lineout. Centre Mafileo Kefu put a great textbook tackle in on Vincent Candelon, breaking his arm on impact, and by the look of things giving himself a bit of a sore shoulder too.

Sebastien Bruno had a huge handoff on Guilem Guirado, who later left the field, and in the same movement you can see Gavin Hume getting smashed around by both Sonny Bill Williams and Jocelino Suta.

He bounced back well though and we later see him time the chase of his own kick perfectly as he flew into Jonny Wilkinson, with one of the bigger hits of the season so far.

More clips to come soon. If there was anything you saw (or didn't see) that you think should be featured on Rugbydump, you know what to do - REQUESTS | EMAIL

Try say the title of this post three times fast, then let the big hitting begin.

I think Tuilagi has it in for Van Niekerk...I seem to remember another RD clip of him running into Big Joe at full tilt last year and flattening him.

I think that the Challenge Cup semi-finals may actually be more intense/interesting than the HC least the Toulon-Connacht match should.

I've a question for the rules' experts about the second Tuilagi's hit (at 1:42 in the vid). The french commentators say that as Van Niekerk is jumping (and have both feet off the ground), this tackle deserve a yellow card.
In my opinion, as the ball cross the 15m line, it's no longer a touch, thus it's allowed to tackle him even if he is jumping (like for example, if a player jumps when catching a pass).
I'm right ?

No Lucas, even if it's in open play you can't tackle a player whose feet are off the ground. This is the law, "Tackling the jumper in the air. A player must not tackle nor tap, push or pull the foot or feet of an opponent jumping for the ball in a lineout or in open play."

nasty he got his arm broken...

i dont think tuilagi's tackle on the guy jumping was actually as hard as it looked....

i mean it looked more like he was dragged out of the air, rather than hit by a flying train...

if you get what i mean...

that first tuilagi tackle is awesome... i mean joe van niekerk is a big guy and still gets hammered. look at the impact... he is down in a split second... tuilagi is a monster. does anyone know if he is able to play 80mins?
sometimes i think about how some union forwards would do in league. imagine henry tuilagi playing as a front rower in rugby league. that would be brutal collisions...

Henry Tuilagi is maturing into 1 helluva number 8 in his own right. I'd like to see him matching with the likes of Spies and Heaslip at Test level.

This was a superb fight, but it also feels thats tackles are going a bit too far nowadays...

There's everything you need in Top14: big games, big names, big hits, big and full stadiums, sunny weather...Best competition in the world

I dunno, I think that its part of the game as it develops. All those tackles were legitimate with the possible exception of the one at 1:40. As the players get bigger and stronger, the tackles are going to have be harder in order to take the down.

Just wondering if someone could tell me what the top French league is called? Is it Top 14? As that is so confusing.

"imagine henry tuilagi playing as a front rower in rugby league."

He did play in League for a little while. Nothing came of it.

Freddie Tuilagi, the oldest of the Tuilagis played with ST Helens for a season or two. He went good.

Henry would go good in both League and Union. and I'd even go as far as saying he'd have been a monster in the NFL, given he was raised in America and played gridiron.

since when are you allowed to lead with an elbow, the forward bouncing player away in the middle?

Greiffel April 25, 2010 8:14 pm

Tom, yes, it is called the Top 14. Don't get confused with Super 14 rugby, which is between SA, NZ, and Aus. That started as Super 10, and with growth became Super 14 eventually. Next year it will be the Super 15.. so I guess the confusion continues for some.

@Tom: Like Greiffel said this is Top 14, because there are 14 teams in the premiere league. Maybe if it grows it will be top 16!

French championship was "Top 16" at the beginning. Went to 14 teams only 3 years ago.

Big, big hits! Hume's tackle was awesome except from one detail... Nobody can leave Wilko bruised and not feel guilty.

Tackler at 1:40 is a mile offside anyway, he is not in the lineout, not the halfback, so should be 10m back until the ball crosses the 15m. Jumps the gun by a loooong way. Shit reffing.
