Jaque Fourie's two great tries against the Crusaders
There were over 48 000 fans at Newlands to welcome the Stormers back as the two best defensive sides in the tournament battled it out in a game that ultimately came down to the boot of flyhalf Peter Grant, who kicked 27 points on his own.
The Crusaders scored twice, through Dan Carter and Colin Slade, but the Stormers managed three of their own with two to Fourie and one to big Fijian Sireli Naqelevuki.
The first try scored by Fourie was a classic as he used his deceptive speed and strength to glide past and fend off the Crusaders tacklers. The mob over the tryline gives you an idea of how good, and how valued that try was for the Stormers.
The second was a fairly simple finish to what was a great set piece move executed to perfection. Ricky Januaries timing and the injection of pace from Gio Aplon played a vital part in setting up Fourie for the run in.
With the win, the Stormers become the first South Africa side to ever record a clean sweep over all New Zealand sides in a Super Rugby season. Theyre looking good for a home semi final, but face two tough matches ahead, against both the Sharks and the Bulls.

2nd was true class though.

Lets get formalities out the way while we're at it.
"Forward passes.. poor defence.. useless attendance."
Right, moving on. Great tries.

............................
Both tries were pure class by both Fourie and the rest of the guys involved. When they can tear apart the Crusaders like that, they must be doing something right.
Chris Boy May 01, 2010 3:09 pm

Both these tries were awesome.
Joost May 01, 2010 3:24 pm

It's great to see Gio Aplon turned from 7's sneaky man to a complete full back (hes just 1.75 m).
Great tries, packed stadium, and Fourie's finally convinced me as the best south african outisde centre. Keep pushing Wynand...
Oh, and Les Bleus: Shut the fuck up
Cheers
vinniechan May 01, 2010 3:28 pm

Second try: some great looping to create the gap. Fourie showed quite some pace to finish that off.
Anonymous May 01, 2010 4:22 pm

im certain in the lions games last summer the lions got pinged for something similar a couple of times.
Anonymous May 01, 2010 4:34 pm

"forward pass and useless defence for both tries"
What on earth are you smoking!
No forward pass.
No obstruction.(The same player makes one of the next tackles!)
Useless Defence?
The 2nd best defence in comp? No.
The class players have a tendency to make other players look useless...Cullen, Caucau, BOD and above all Lomu.
Great site!
FrankyH May 01, 2010 4:55 pm

I suppose that's because of apartheid. What a pity those few idiotic dutchmen f*cked everything up for us!
If you take a pessimistic approach to life, and rugby, you'll find fault it pretty much 99% of tries ever scored. Good luck with enjoying rugby as a neutral then.
Goose Island May 01, 2010 5:06 pm

He always seems to make his tries out of nowhere; maybe that's why it looks like the defense is a bit lax around him sometimes. Dan Carter probably should've made the tackle on the first try, but really...I'm not sure if anything was going to prevent that awesome try from happening.

if you slow it down you can see that Januarie receives the ball to the left and behind of fourie who is running forward and slightly towards the touchline nearer to the camera. Januarie then runs round the back of Fourie. Heck, it's like American football really!
Alain May 01, 2010 10:01 pm

that 1st try is amazing.stil dont think jaque's that fast tho.just ran good angles and is a hard guy to bring down..
(u-p)rick May 01, 2010 10:52 pm

this is a site for picking apart and appreciatig rugby....and to basically look at the details...yet you say....ah, south african, try, must be amazing...no faults...if there are faults then ignore them......
how about this one time, when it comes to opinions and comments, you ALL forget SH NH...you all forget ANY NATIONALITY, ...and just watch...
and ofcourse, if you felt there was some obstruction then say it....and dont deny it people...however slight or minor, it was still obstruction...
YETTT...retards...i hope you've read this far!...it does not mean his efforts and tries were not good tries...if someone says forward pass then look at it, and actually put your opinion...
If i say obstruction and you say 'ooohhhemmmmgeeee stop picking it apart, just appreciate it' then that makes you sound like such a fag....honestly...just say, 'yeh true, luckily he didnt get caught...'
i mean, we ALL know Mccaw lives on the edge of the laws....so when he does something dodgy, and we acknowledge it, but the ref does not, doesnt that mean we are 'appreciating' his work ?!?
geeeez....
feel like i've connected to footballdump.com or something...

Anonymous May 02, 2010 1:53 am

Oh and Fourie used to be a wing, so yeah, he is actually very quick for a centre.

Jaque Fourie has a world cup winners medal draped around his bull-like neck, so whatever.

two brilliant trys from one of my favorite players. fourie is one of the best centers around today. btw NH rugby fans, maybe your just complaining because there were try's scored and not all the points came from penalty goals?
frog legs May 02, 2010 4:38 am

Something I'd like to see is O'Driscoll and Fourie both playing for the same Baa Baas side one of these days. As far as I know, they've never played on the same side, have they?

10. Carter
11. Habana
12. Jauzion
13. Fourie or BOD
14. Bowe
15. Poitrenaud
how's that for a backline?
Anonymous May 02, 2010 5:55 am

Taking their careers to date though, one has to say that BOD has been the premier 13 in world rugby the past decade. The fact that it is still a very legitimate claim to pronounce him the best current 13 in world, speaks volumes. Personally, its Fourie for me, for his overall value to the team. Anyone want to suggest a current 12 on par with these 2?

Jaque Fourie literally beat half the Crusaders team (considering the Crusaders are the 2nd best defensive team in the competition)
BOD has never been the same after Umaga dominated him in a tackle and broke his neck.

super 14: untouchable
FrankyH May 02, 2010 9:57 am

Look at the first angle and you'll see how he tried to stop so he didn't make any contact. Carter barely broke stride and was nowhere near Januarie, although he did give him a nice shove after he'd passed the ball.
Where should Fourie have gone?! He was running a dummy run, and then basically just staying in support. Should he have just stayed standing in his own half rather?
Some of you internet warriors need to get out and play more.

BOD has captained the Lions once not 3 times.
(In 2001 it was Johnno and in 2009 it was POC).
Ireland beat Georgia.
and Umgaga did not break BOD's neck in a tackle.

Try of the year 2009, world cup winner, very very deceptive pace.
Steve-o May 02, 2010 6:42 pm

Watch him after Habana got tackled in the build up to the first try, he was standing out Grant, saw the defence line gap and then shifted inside Grant. Good vision, good running line, pace, determination. Fantastic.
BTW LOL @ the calls for obstruction in the 2nd try.

It was just terrible refing, some were alright calls like the high tackle by Thorn, but the yellow card for Read? The penalties against Read? Mccaw? I'm sure he was bribed for that game, never have I seen such a one sided game in my life.
Congb May 03, 2010 4:38 am

I didn't see the game so I won't comment on the refing for that one but I will say that in general this Super 14 season has seen some VERY questionable refing.
I think SANZA will be talking to all the refs after this season.

Madflyhalf May 03, 2010 10:07 am

Actually the error comes from the CRU player outside him, who runs into Januarie opening a big hole for Aplon.
Aplon runs into it with a lot of pace, and then it's simple to finish!
Great movement from Stomers! They're my favourite SA team! I think they could beat every european team, their defence is awsome from the basics: tackling is extremely aggressive and accurate! And it's a team who can attack very well with all 15 men!

perfectly executed loop, that was all.we see johnny sexton and BOD do that every week in the NH,and yet they rarely have the class to finish the move off.fair play to aplon, great pace

Yeah, Super 14 has been terrible. Like the Crusaders vs Hurricanes game, the ref gave two tries to the Crusaders which shouldn't have been, any idiot with a rulebook and eyes could see.
The Waratahs vs Brumbies game was a bit dodgy, not the try to AAC, but the constant penalties against the Brumbies which weren't.
Overall it has been pretty slack this year in terms of refing.

Keep McCaw, I take Schalk and Heinrich!!! :D

As usual Super 14 is prodicing some great rugby this year as is the HC and hopefully everyone's enjoyng it...
