How Imanol Harinordoquy broke his nose on Sebastien Chabal

How Imanol Harinordoquy broke his nose on Sebastien Chabal

If you watched the Heineken Cup semi final between Biarritz and Munster on the weekend you will have noticed that Imanol Harinordoquy had something rather peculiar attached to his face. Sebastien Chabal has something to do with that.

Harinordoquy broke his nose when playing against Racing Metro in the Top 14, leading to him being a doubtful starter for the big Heineken Cup home clash with Munster.

Such is the courage of the man, and the hugeness of the occasion, that he didnt let it stop him running out and contributing towards his sides 18-7 win.

"There is no way they will play a match of this size without him," said Ireland hooker Jerry Flannery during the week. He was correct, and we all watched in awe and fascination as the big Frenchman turned up wearing a somewhat bizarre looking facemask.

His performance was inspirational as he overcame the pain and awkwardness of not only the broken nose, but the rib injury which also troubled him, before he eventually walked off to a standing ovation.

When seeing that facemask, the question for many fans was ' How did he break his nose in the first place?' News stories reported that it was through a clash with Sebastien Chabal. Some then interpreted that as meaning there was a big hit, so the emails got sent my way and the task was to find the moment of the incident.

So, here it is. I can tell you that its anything but deliberate intent from Chabal, as it was simply an unlucky knock that occurred after a good drive off the base of the scrum.

Hardly spectacular, but at least now everyone will know what happened, and why Harinordoquy looked like he did for one of the most important matches of his career.

Looked painful. Seems like more and more teams are defending with some of the backrow off of the scrum and in the defensive line. Harinordoquy is a hero though, especially when he kept getting up from shots to the ribs against Munster.

Why all the big deal for a broken nose?

They're common as hell. Only that Harinordoquy wore stupid and excessive protection that anyone cares.

Ouch gotta be painful!

To the "sour" anonymous just above,
A first mask have been accepted by ERC 1 week before the match. But 2 days before biarritz-munster, erc decided that the mask was finally not correct because of its solid structure

So biarritz staff had to put straps around which give this spectacular aspect.

What a hero this guy is. Over the past year he's grown into one of my favourite players and is without doubt one of th best back-row forwards in world rugby.

He had surgery some days before the game. That's why his nose aera was very fragile, dumbass.

Moreover, this guy is the most funny player in France's squad with prop Fabien Barcella. the two players from Biarritz are just hilarious in the clips "destins mls", like yannoche said. It's not subtitled in english, donc les amis frenchies qui n'ont pas vu ces vidos, ruez vous!

I know Harinordoquy is 1st class, for sure - an awesome number 8. But do Biarritz not have a decent back-up for the number 8 position?

I mean, they must, right, because Harinordoquy went off and Florian Faure came on...I just think that in most situations dealing with a broken nose, a team would go ahead and put in their second-best. But, it was a HC semi-final...AND, Harinordoquy played great, even with a broken nose and that mask partially blocking his vision.

Harinordoquy is a beast. Nuff said.

It's going to be a sad day for French rugby when he packs in his boots.

AM i still the only one a bit perplexed by why harinordoquy wasnt in that scrum?

The clip starts with some french comments about a yellow card, probably in the backline, so they chose to put harinordoquy in the defensive backline.

My pleasure Maximus!
Watching "destins Mles" is very funny especially between Imanol Harinordoquy and Fabien Barcella :)))

It also gives some idea about player thoughts before the matches.

I watched the Destin Melee and Hari says during the fashion spot that he's always been interested in fashion, and goes on to say that the orange plastic jacket is perfect for Fabian Barcella...jokingly.

Then he says that he's been practicing with the mask for the Munster match and hopes that it won't be that much of a handicap. He too says that it reminds him of a gladiator mask.

I enjoyed his comment after the match. The approximate translation is "I had displaced ribs in first half that I managed to put back in right position myself but got another shock and the ribs moved again and its started to be really painfull..."
