Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 14

Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 14

So weve watched fourteen rounds of the Super 14 and the top four have been decided after yet another intense week of rugby down south. Weve got a great selection of tries for you today, so take a look at the Pick of the Week ahead of the semi finals tomorrow.

The Bulls, who fielded a below par side in order to rest some players, got hammered by the Stormers in Cape Town who were playing for a home semi final spot.

The Stormers actually set a few records this season, as they are the side that conceded the lowest amount of points for a season, as well as the least number of tries, 17. Nobody managed a four-try bonus point against them either, and the Blues were the only team to cross three times, despite the Stormers winning that game.

They will host the Waratahs tomorrow, a side whove actually won and lost the same amount of games as the Stormers, as well as scored 20 more points than them. Theyve conceded more though, with the Stormers having a better points difference. By all means theyre an evenly matched side, so it should be a great game.

The Bulls, sitting pretty on the top of the table, will host the Crusaders in Soweto, a field foreign to them, but theyll no doubt have the fans from Pretoria out in full force. The Crusaders have a disadvantage when it comes to travel, as they left South Africa not too long ago, but have now had to make the long trip back for the game.

Were set for a great afternoon of rugby with two intense semi finals. For now though, heres the best tries from the final round-robin stage of the tournament. Theyre all quality tries as usual, but make sure you dont miss the Quade Cooper flick that everyones been talking about. Enjoy.

The Pick of the Week archive is now updated so you can easily access and watch the best tries from each week of the 2010 Super 14. Click the banner on the sidebar, or follow this link now .

the standard of try scoring in the s14 is without doubt better than any other league week in week out. you'd have to wait weeks to get a length of the field try in the guiness prem.

Let's not start with the dick measuring contests pls people? What's the point?! Just enjoy the tries.

I thought the Maitland one for the Crusaders was actually really good. So were a lot of the others though. Cheers RD. Big day tomorrow!

Dear God. Who chose the background music? I love rock(ect) almost as much as I like rugby, but these last two Highlights soundtracks have been horrendous...Please play energetic music...I like to live the experience, again.

The Rugby absolutely rocks though. I live in Cape Town and the vibe is something I have never experienced!

From a proud Englishman I have to say there is some proper good rugby there. Especially the one with james o'connor counter attacking, is he that young guy who plays for australia but could have chosen NZ or SA? Anyway cracking stuff. Probably the best highlights video i've seen on here. I'm a fan of cheerleaders, but not at rugby matches though.

Great stuff here, probably the best highlights of only one day ever !
Real shame that Reds aren't in the semis, i'd loved to see Cooper playing at this level of the competition :)

Wallabies staff are gonna have a real tough choice here. In my opinion they just can't not to give him jersey n10 but will Giteau accept to play as a fulltime 12 ?
Well, if France, NZ and SA keep performing that way, and now this australian team improving again and again, I think the world cup next year could just become legendary :D

yes...but he had the balls and tenacity to throw the pass. Gotta love the confidence of not just Cooper but almost every player in the competition. Once upon a time there was rugby like this in the NH...back in the 70s/80s where the players were not scared to throw that 50/50 pass. Go back and see some of the highlights from the 5 Nations from that era and you'll find a lot of similar plays.

Well done, whoever did this, you basically excluded any South African tries. And don't come to me with this bullshit "South Africa don't score good tries" when the Bulls are the fucking lead try scorers. The Cheetahs scored some wonderful tries but none were shown, the Build up to both Habana's tries were exceptional.

Next time don't waste my time... just call this shit the ANZAC pick of the week, thanks.

Christ some Saffers get defensive and aggressive... This was an amazing compilation of tries, on a website that as far as I can tell has a lot of South African members and possibly is even run by one (?) and you claim some big conspiracy because there were only one or two tries by South African teams? Come on, just enjoy the tries for what they are, which is incredible

^^ Go back and watch the highlights from some of the rounds in which the Bulls actually played a game, man. They've dominated most of the other highlights. There were a couple of great Stormers tries in that clip and a ton of good tries from all nations that could have made it.

Some great tries this weekend.
The funny thing is Australia will probably bench Cooper and O'Conner may not even get in the squad, they've got so much depth in their backline this year.
It
It'll probly be Barnes at five eight and Gitaeu at inside centrer, with Kurtley Beal or Ashley=Cooper at fullback.

awesome tries from all over the park !!!!

gotta love quade cooper and james oconnor, cos you need balls to run back from ur ingoal or throw that 50-50 'back door' pass,
because it could indeed go terribly bad (check the friday funnies with dave haylet-petty or somthng...)

anyway, thanks RD for all the efforts you've all put into all these S14 highlights throughout the season, hoping more is come

and imo, wallabies should go for the following set-up (at least give it a go for the june tests)

genia-cooper(works brill for reds)

gitts- 13?? maybe digby and put
mitchell on the wing

digby ioane-peter hynes

o'connor

ps: that warathas shirt was rather unusual but original (is max guazzini planning on a move down under... xD )

My All Blacks 22 this year would be

1. Tony Woodcock
2. Kevin Mealamu
3. Owen Franks
4. Brad Thorn
5. Same Whitelock
6. Jerome Kaino
7. Richie Mccaw
8. Keiran Read
9. Jimmy Cowan
10. Daniel Carter
11. Joe Rokocoko
12. Dan Bowden
13. Conrad Smith
14. Hosea Gear
15. Cory Jane

16. Jason Rutledge
17. Neemia Tialata
18. Chris Jack
19. Victor Vito
20. Alby Matthewson
21. Luke Mcalister
22. Israel Dagg

My reason for putting Bowden at 12.

Nonnu is injured, the competition therefore is Benson Stanley, Jason Shoemark and Ryan Crotty, or moving someone who hasn't been playing second-five at Super 14 like Israel Dagg or Rudi Wulf there. I pick Bowden over the others because of his distribution skills and playmaking abilities.

I know this leaves the centres lacking attacking flair, because Conrad Smith is more of a defensive centre, I feel the fire power from the back three, which I think New Zealand has the best back three and depth to the back three in the world right now, would more than make up for this.

Four posts in a row :)

I know people would disagree by saying New Zealand having the best back three in the world right now. But look at the statistics,

Tries:

Joe Rokocoko : 9
Rene Ranger : 7
David Smith : 7
Zac Guildford : 6
Sean Maitland : 6
Rudi Wulf : 5
Rene Ranger : 5
Israel Dagg : 5
Cory Jane : 4
Hosea Gear : 4

Plus Lelia Masaga and Sitiveni Sivivatu who are injured, there are a variety of options avaliable for New Zealand.

Nearly every single one of these tries is better than the guiness premiership try of the season! Great running rugby, but have to say it might possibly have something to do with the standard of tackling aswell!

Yes, this site is run by a South African. That's the problem. He feels guilty if he puts too many SA tries in.

You're a goon. I'm sure that he watches whatever games of the S14 he has the time to watch and simply picks the tries he finds most inspiring out of those. I don't see what the problem is. To make it fit with a song, it's got to be a certain length, so some tries get excluded. Why don't you either (a) request a clip of the Cheetahs match or a specific try, or (b) make your own video and post it. Until then, come off it.

They'll measure up the same way as usual.
The only question is if Australia can challenge South Africa and New Zealand as best team.
The tackling might look poor to an Englishman, but that's cuz you lot don't know to break them.

If anyone reckons they can run a better rugby site than this, for frickin' free, then my advice is to go ahead. Then you can feature all the action from whichever country you think is being marginalised here. Otherwise, shut the hell up and thank your lucky stars that Greiffel runs this site at all. I for one as a NH fan without SKY TV can only see a lot of this stuff right here and I'm very grateful for it.

As for the rugby - great stuff from the S14 as always. My Dad, who's as proud an England fan as ever there was, saw his first S14 game the other day and he said it was brilliant.

Quade Cooper is just the sort of player every true rugby fan loves to watch.

If anyone reckons they can run a better rugby site than this, for frickin' free, then my advice is to go ahead. good tries, i hope the tahs prevail today. Rob Horne vs Jaque Fourie is going to be a telling duel.

Josh,

Bowden can't play because he's leaving at the end of the season. Which leaves us with crap for centres.

And I think with a backline featuring so many Hurricanes might not go over well with some of the Crusaders backs, who have actually been winning games :P I think people like Slade and Guildford deserve a shot, and I'd definitely like to see Ranger.

RWC 2015 - Australia backline:

Genia
Cooper
Mitchell
Barnes
Horne
Turner
O'Connor

on the bench: Toomua, Ioane/Chambers

They should try Horne in 13 jersey spot since now! He is the future in that position!

Why can't we Brits play rugby like this? We see some good plays but nothing comparable to Super 14. Unbelievable..

south afrika is the beeeest!!!!,that is why we have so many tries in the super14. we are world cup winners, twice. more sucesfil than anyone else, part from austria we are equal. but we bet dem 2-1 last year and usualy win aganst them in the 3nations.

nzl vs bokke 0-3 lastest year. what this year? 0-3 again, then only team to win wc back to back.

Oh snap. Bowden is gone? We are screwed.

The only person I kind've like is Benson Stanley, but I think he is a bad option. We need to move someone then, like Israel Dagg to 12 or even Colin Slade. They are both first-fives, so it could work out. Hey, it is only Wales and Ireland, it is not like we are versing Fiji or Georgia.

Interesting comments. The one Cheetahs try that I saw, that was recommended to me, had atrocious defence from the Lions so it was scrapped because of timing etc. Difficult to please everyone, especially when there's only a few hours to make these things.

Good to hear that the majority enjoyed it anyway.

Josh, do you not think, a wild card admittedly, Toeava deserves mention?!!

Also genetics? Mmm, the poles, and slavs in general would win that battle!!!

Toeava is injured with a hip problem, but he would be my third choice, behind Nonu and Mcalister at number 12.

how come the national team never beats south africa, newzealand or australia

Really? Really? England beat them all from 1998-2007. The beating of the All Blacks stopped in 2004, South Africa in 2007 and Australia in 2007 :)

England is crap, but saying they never beat South Africa, Australia or New Zealand is just such a stupid comment.

When can we get anonymous posting disabled on RD?

Working on it.. Going to be having a bit of a donation/development drive later this week actually to help out. If anyone can contribute it would go a long way towards relaunching the site.

@ Madflyhalf.... That's a pretty young backline. You need some experienced old heads in there somewhere.
