The Barbarians beat Ireland in Limerick
Cardiff Blues eighthman Xavier Rush captained the famous Barbarians on the night. He scored their first try before George Smith and Cedric Heymans crossed, with Brock James and Jean-Baptiste Elissalde kicking the points which got the hotchpotch side the victory.
Their team included a few Irish players this week, with former Ireland lock Malcolm OKelly playing his final professional game, and Alan Quinlan on the flank going up against his countrymen.
The Barbarians built up a lead of 21-3 before Ireland fought back well with tries to Niall Ronan and Tony Buckley. Ronan OGara kicked 13 points but it was to no avail as their late charge was held off by the Barbarians, resulting in a famous win for the club.
Ireland now travels to Australasia where they will face All Blacks on the 12th of June, and the Wallabies in Brisbane on the 26th of June.

Nice result for the Barbarians. I still don't know how Laulala isn't an All Black currently though. They're missing a trick there I think.
Thanks RD

Bad result for Ireland. I still don't how ROG got to be an Irish international player.
They're suffering that decision there I think.
Thanks RD

Kearney for tests June 06, 2010 12:06 am

But would Romain Poite ever just cop on though with the scrums? He takes absolutely all day with them. He's so stupid. He really wrecked the match with his idiocy.
miner June 06, 2010 1:06 am

Beaten by the barbarians, how embarassing.
Yeah, beaten by a collection of some of the best players in the world...really embarrassing.
I don't, however, see Ireland coming close to beating the AB's...there's always a chance, though, I guess.
Also, Kearney for Tests, I think you're being a bit harsh on Poite. Yeah, he takes forever, but players learn to adapt...I don't think he ruined the match, as Ireland weren't really winning in the scrums, in the first place.

if i recall correctly, people booed percy when the barbarians kicked for goal a few years back against austraila.
when we have our alumni game, the alumni never kick penalties and I mean they always take kick taps, no punting or shots at goal.
good win to the barbarians anyway though

We are going to get mullered down south this summer. Half of our first team are injured and so are the guys that should replace them.
We should just call of the tour.

ehh rugbydump this guy has the biggest shitload of rugby on his channel. in hd too :/ you guys could have had every single super 14 match covered with this guy.

if o'gara goes low,its going to be the same result:he'll get bounced.saying "get him around the ankles"only works to a certain point,ROG simply isnt big enough or strong enough.i think its about time everyone accepted that its not his tackling technique, its his physical nature, and stopped moaning

I think it was quite a junior team though.
And man, that referee was annoying. He made a couple of bad decisions that you can let go, but the calling at the scrum was so bad. It was so irritating to watch.
Anonymous June 06, 2010 12:07 pm

He was inconstant at the scrum. He first surprised everyone by being so slow. Then he'd use slightly different timing which messed up the engagement. He also paused halfway through as well AND messed up the timing: "Crouch...touch.............pause......engage"

It doesn't really matter...Ireland were still never going to win the battles in the scrum. Poite may have been bad there, but who cares - that's not why Ireland lost the match. They lost because of the silly handling errors and not being able to finish great runs/line breaks. It's unfortunate, because they did play some good rugby.
And what are you all talking about, first- and second-string players being injured? Who, exactly?
The only two who I'd really think would be severely missed are BOD and Heaslip, and as far as I know, they're included in the tour.
Earls, while a great up-and-coming player, wouldn't be a deciding factor. Flannery would be missed for sure, as he can be pretty integral to Ireland having great lineouts.
But let's not make excuses. I'm not expecting Ireland to win, but I'd be ecstatic if they do.

Paul O'Connell, Rory Best, Stephen Ferris, Keith Earls, Luke Fitzgerald, Sean O'Brien, Kevin McLaughlin, Denis Leamy, Donnacha Ryan, Shane Horgan, Fergus McFadden and Jerry Flannery.
ALL OUT!!
I know people are dissapointed about the how weakened were going to be for the tour. But this could really stand to us, massive game time for some of the peripheral players is really going to improve strength in depth. We might even come out of the undoubted flaking with a better side. No need to despair the WC is still 18 months away. At least we know what has to be done now... Scrum work mainly.
Lets not forget, both Australia and SA got hockeyed by Ireland in November 2006 with weakened sides and look what happened just one year on.
What we need to see out of these tests is an improvement. These lads know how to play some good stuff, that try for example was great rugby. If we could make it more consistent and weed out the weaknesses we wont be half bad.
kevdetoulouse June 06, 2010 8:07 pm

Anonymous June 06, 2010 8:30 pm

It does matter. Ireland are weak at the scrum. If they can only just keep possession from a good ref, they get screwed if when you get Poite. It's pretty irritating to watch because the problem is pretty obvious and even the players were getting pissed.
And I didn't say that lost them the match, it's just a pain in the ass to watch a senior ref do that. It's painfully obvious you're messing things up so why do it?
pio June 06, 2010 9:09 pm

I agree that Carr should've been selected, especially if Horgan is out.
But let's not act like NZ aren't missing some key players as well. Ali Williams is still out, and now Muliaina, Kahui, and Tom Donnelly are questionable. But NZ have a huge list of talented players ready to take their place in the lineup...
I think that it's better to look at this as a opportunity for Ireland to see just how good their player base really is, since some of the big name guys are out.
----
On a side note...Tony Buckley is a friggin mastodon. John Hayes is a great player and class act, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to start the tour with Buckley given his strength and size...?

Huh!! the 3rd June 06, 2010 9:59 pm

He yellow carded the baa baa's loose head, persumably for foul play off the ball, the cameras didn't show why (thanks rte). Then the play continues with a scrum to the Baa baas (which they eventually score from). WTF?? If foul play warrants a sin bin, then surely the game restarts with a pen to the team the foul has been commited against. This is the same ref who against Munster gave the Saints a scrum when Warrick knocked the ball on, Gerathy clothes lined him 2 sec after. He told O'Connell that the knock on came first and ignored the foul.
INCROYABLE!! QUELLE HORREUR!!
Bring back Joel Joute.
I loved the crowd booing some of the Baa baa hits, then realising it was Quinny and shutting up. Quinny's magic created Rush's try. Watch him holding either Tuohy or Muldoon giving Rush 5m space.
On Quinlain.
Lets start with the fact a lot of people disagree with his style and think he's too old to make the WC. But lets face it, he'll be in the same condition in 15 months as he is now. 40 fags a day for 20 years haven't slowed him yet. I know Leamy and Ferris are great powerful 6s but Quinny offers something different. He has hand skills, footballing skills (Tipp under age star) and for nearly 36 still a good runner. But above all else, he's probably the most intelligent operator in the game (loose fingers aside). Just saying.

I do miss stringer from the irish team, the guy is small, cocky, aggressive and really just what you want from a scrum half. If the ball is hindered stringer digs it out!
Also very nice to see a tap and go penalty, not often you see them these days, unless its a quick tap on the mark, but not the old school pass to the prop and see what happens kinda moves...

For the test against England (and Irlenad I guess though some guys might heal by then) Australia is missing, just off thetop of my head :
Stephen moore, Ben Robinson, Ben Alexander (that's the entire starting front row out), Tatafu Polota-Nau (the back-up hooker), James Horwill, Stirling Mortlock, Will Genia, Wycliff Palu, Peter Hynes and Ben Daley.
It's just part of rugby, that's why you need depth to be succesful.

You seem to think this is an isolated incident when in fact all players do it. See it all the time, players trying to slip theirnhands under the ball after its been grounded. Nothing new. Seems like you already have a grudge against Stringer, not just because of this incident. Your reaction is totally over the top.
@Huh!!the 3rd
Well said. Watching Quinlan on an opposing team is really frustrating, he really is a pest and winds people up. But he's a great player for Munster and Irish rugby and as u say brings something else to the game. He's a unique player and is unlucky not to be on the Ireland tour given their lack of available blindsides
Johne Murphy's try saving tackle on Heymans was also class

Get over it mate. Everyone does it. You've obviously never played yourself and never been in that situation. The same thing happens every single time, at schools, club and international. The only difference here is that the player who put his hands under could be seen as he wasn't buried under a bunch of players for once.
The whistle had blown and the decision had been made before he did it anyway so it had no effect on the game.
