Friday Funnies - The Rocky Elsom human hurdle attempt
From last weekend against Fiji, this clip was requested as it's probably something you wont see everyday in rugby, if ever. Rocky Elsom's leapfrog attempt actually earned his side a penalty as he jumped over the opposition fullback.
He was however caught midair, and subsequently dumped to the ground, only a few metres from the tryline. Dangerous play said the ref as he marched the influential Aussie back.
The Wallabies will face England tomorrow for the Cook Cup trophy, but have had to make adjustments after the late withdrawal of Matt Giteau. Captain Elsom is still backing his side to take the win though, despite injury concerns.
"Having the injuries isnt ideal ideal but the way we train and practice it's very much a squad focus so guys can slot in and out," said Elsom.
Perhaps he needs to work on this move a little more in practice.

first!!!unbelievable the way the fijian player caught elsom midair and dumped him as if he were a ragdoll, rather than a 6"4,100 kilos rugby player!!!

Is it really dangerous play to jump over a tackler who left his feet and lost control of his body?
The other defender was in good position otherwise the guy is gone!

Agreed. Ref was thinking about the defender getting knee'd in the face. Nice of the Fijian to put Elsom down gently though.

It is dangerous... my friend was knocked out by a guy jumping and throwing his knees at his head..
I guess at big guy like Elsom would do a lot worse!

Not everyone can hurdle people as well as Todd Clever ;)

definitly dangerous play, a guy in my year got a concussion from someone trying to jump his tackle

jumping over the tackler is not dangerous play. However, jumping into the second tackler was. Second tackler did well to get him down safely i think

jumoing a tackle is AGAINST THE RULES, its not like the ref was using his discresion here, he just called it as it should have been. end of. you cant jump a tackle, unless you disguise it and you could call it a dive for the line. correct call by the ref, there should be no debate about it.

as stated above, jumping tackles is indeed against the rules.I was taught that when i was a kid. Thought it was common knowledge....

Jumping into a tackle is not specifically prohibited in law but Elsom's actions were certainly dangerous. They were dangerous to the defender, and they were dangerous to himself.

But, I think that's my point - it's not a specific law prohibiting jumping a tackle; it's the referee's discretion to deem it as dangerous play.
I was a little disappointed this was a penalty, but I think the ref got it right, actually. Jumping the attempted tackle: fine. Jumping into the actual tackle: could be ruled as dangerous play.

you cannot jump into a tackle.
that is the law, i know because i was penalised for it at school.
especially with the knees like that well done referee.

Also, I think the only instance you're allowed to take someone out in the air is in the try scoring process.

you can't jump 'out' of a tackle so i assume you can't jump in to one. was a bit stupid anyway really...

Definitely a penalty - I've been pinged for it before. Think about it; it's essentially a flying knee...

The jumping isn't actually ilegal, the knee is.
If he jumped but kept his knees down, he'd be fine.
