All Blacks power past the Springboks in Auckland
The top two sides in the world wanted to get the early ascendency in the tournament and it was the All Blacks who showed greater guile and passion as they not only were more physical, but managed to disrupt the visitors' set piece and pestered at the breakdown regularly.
Bakkies Botha managed to get himself cited, as Jimmy Cowan pulled him back before Botha laid into the All Black scrumhalf with the head. The incident was replayed countless times, and Botha will no doubt be out for a few weeks following the disciplinary hearing in Auckland tomorrow.
"I don't approve of any of my players playing outside the rules and it was an ill-disciplined, very poor first half which meant we had no momentum. Only Bakkies can explain what goes on in his head," captain John Smit said.
Botha was yellow carded soon after for a first offence in the redzone, with the earlier incident perhaps playing on the mind of referee Alan Lewis, who missed it at the time.
The momentum shifted and New Zealand got off to a flyer, eventually resulting in an impressive 20-3 lead at half time. The Springboks looked fresher in the second half, but couldnt claw their way back to a decent position as the home side continued to dominate.
"The All Blacks were really good tonight but we just didn't rock up, the lights were out tonight. A very poor, ill-disciplined first half killed any momentum, but we played better at the start of the second half.
If we could have kept that pressure on, there was enough time for us to get back on even terms. But we were non-existent at the breakdowns, there was nothing going on on our side and we didn't put up much of a contest," Smit said.
"Our minds just weren't in the right place, there's no need for over-analysis. It was totally out of character, normally physicality and bringing that attitude to the set-piece comes naturally for this team. But it's nothing we can't get back.
"Our lineout has been good for a long time, but I have to take it on the chin, I've been poor all week in missing my jumpers. We should have done a lot more in the air and Victor will be frustrated with the kind of balls I threw to the guys," he added.
"There's no need to panic, it's nothing we can't fix. It's not a train smash, it's only the first game of the Tri-Nations. Now we need to stop the momentum of a great team but our destiny is in our own hands," De Villiers said.
The Botha incident will be posted seperately soon, as will the Haka if anyone wants to see it.

I'm wondering though: could you guys include more than scoring (and yellow card) moments in the highlights? Earlier this year I noticed that a lot of the northern hemisphere highlights also included some of the more exciting passages of play, tries-almost-scored, really big hits, etc. I enjoyed that. Thanks!

The all blacks were intense and played great rugby, did not play to our strengths but still beat us in the areas we were considered "better". on a whole the boks just did not defend or contest. I would take jdv off the wing cuz roko has him beat everyday of the week. wynand is too predictable and defensively par with de jong who looked great in green and gold. butch james should not even be considered because he just wants to fight. aplon on the wing with Frans steyn in 15... just by having him on the field makes the opponents more cautious because of the boot. m steyn could have done more too with an almost try and the drop kicks were not set up right... wishful thinking really, even though he is good it makes it look like a good attempt but those should be slotted just like penalties if set up correctly.
I have now said my bit, I hope the team can learn from this defeat as the all blacks did from last years games.
Amazing play from All blacks. deserved to win.. I just hope a week is enough time to make the next game more of a competition rather than a massacre.

2-- Wow, when was the last time the Boks forward pack was completely outmuscled like this? Du Plessis has to go, Woodcock tore him up. Also, Kieran Read far outplayed Spies, really surprising.
3-- The ABs need to give Weepu a start, I thought his service was much better and faster than Cowan's.
The Boks will rebound next week, should be a great one in Wellington.

Spies is just an overrated gym monkey.
All blacks were awesome again, a step ahead of anyone else at the moment.

I remember someone trying to justify Botha's actions on Aplon by saying he was traditional an religious off the field. On the field, he is a scum bag. And idiotic. Firstly, don't take a take shot with the head on a smaller man from behind. Secondly, don't do it with cameras all over you. Thirdly, don't do it with a ton of bans behind you. I mean, if your team and management protested together last year (justice armbands and all that) about the barge on Jones and you follow it up with blatantly malicious offenses over the next year, it speaks badly of you and them.
It's a shame, because I love Botha's aggression. He put in a huge hit today which I really enjoyed seeing.

All Blacks were great, but Botha did his best to ruin things for the Boks. They really miss fourie du preez too..
I thought Mealamu was good all match, as was Nonu. Cant wait for next weekend

Probably at Murrayfield a couple of years ago led by Euan Murray taking the Beast apart.
Still, scarily good stuff from the Boks, just hope for their sake they haven't peaked a year too early again!
Not looking forward to the AB's coming to Murrayfield this November, we'll just need to hope they send a tired 2nd string to avoid a humping, despite how well Scotlands playing at the moment.
Looking forward to playing the Boks after though on this form! ;)

- Surelly this has to be the last we see of bakkies in the bok jearsey? He is a big enough liability to anihilate any advantage he brings to the field, and Sa have enough quality locks to not need him. Russow to start
- De Jong to get another chance instead olivier, who just seem really uninteresting, no spark at all.
- I've allways said this. WTF PdV?!?!?! This guy is nuts, and he wouldn't survive in any other nation than SA, who has enough quality player to more or less compensate for his recurring plonkers in and off the field.
Now for the Abs
- AWESOME WIN!!! Mils is simply the best fullback overall. May not have Frans Steyn's ubber boot or whatever, but is simply sublime in his good day, and offers great vision.
- Thanks for all the points you earned me in my fantasy squad (lol)
- I REALLY wouldn't be in the shoes of any aussie that has to face this squad later on
Cheers

In fact, All Blacks, please play like that for the rest of the season :)
Bokke_2007 July 11, 2010 12:36 am

Well, that was disappointing!!! It really seemed like one team wanted it and the other couldn't give a shit. Bakkies is welcome to his long lay off after yet another brain-fart. Idiot. Honestly, it's hard enough playing the ABs with 15 men!! The men in black definitely stuck it to the boks, and this is certainly not a time to go experimenting with old players in new positions. PdV take note!!
JdV is not a winger.
Olivier can't step up to a test match.
Kirchner is not a Frans Steyn. Januarie needs to lose 2 stone!
Bakkies needs to be put on ice, permanently.
Chiliboy is only there because he's, ehem, brown.
But hey, maybe a good stuffing is exactly what the boks need. nothing worse than complacency heading into a world cup. just ask the all blacks (in 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007) Haha!
What is nice is that we have two teams so closely matched that home advantage actually matters! if this game was in pretoria you could probably reverse the scoreline. Gotta love the 3N!! and on a positive note, at least i don't have to live and work with a nation of kiwis on suicide watch!

Also, it's probably worth pointing out that the Boks took a heavier beating than a shagged-out, injury hit Welsh team against the ABs. Unfortunately the Ireland/NZ game became irrelevant as soon as Heaslip came over all MMA at a ruck (but still scored 4 tries with 14 and 13 men!)
aud July 11, 2010 4:00 pm

sorry, i couldn't keep a straight face.
the irish are a terrible rugby team and should probably stick to gaelic football and hurling instead of using them as an excuse for how bad the RU side is. you boys couldn't buy a win at the moment - even scotland beat you... AT CROKE PARK.
FrankyH July 11, 2010 4:21 pm

Dominating performance by the All Blacks.

Of course it is. Chiliboy isn't international standard, regardless of Smit's patronage.
If he were a white guy who'd been mentored by SMit, but was playing at the standard he plays at (Can't even hold down a starting Curri Cup spot) he wouldn't be playing for the Springboks.

Well done AB's :) lets bring the 3N trophy home! :)
