Willem Alberts smashes young Jaco Taute
The Sharks have been spoilt for loose forwards of late, with the likes of Ryan Kankowski, Jean Deysel, Jacques Botes, Keegan Daniel, young talent Michael Rhodes, and now this season, big Willem Alberts.
Alberts moved to the Sharks this year after spending a few seasons with the team they faced on the weekend, the Lions. His impressive form in last season's Currie Cup, coupled with his size - 1.92m and close to 120kg - made him a much sought after signing and since arriving in Durban, he hasn't disappointed.
His potential and physical presence have already had some predicting a step up to higher honours in the not too distant future. His ball carrying ability and physicality in the tackle have been a real feature of his play.
Nineteen year old Lions fullback Jaco Taute, himself a promising prospect, found out first hand what a unit Alberts is as his counterattack soon came to naught, with the Sharks number eight smashing him dead in his tracks.
He was actually penalised for the hit, but as captain Stefan Terblanche said, Alberts did attempt to grasp the player, so the impact probably made it look more illegal than it actually was.

BOOOOOOOOM! This is exactly like the Franks tackle on Brown imo, such a hard and fast collision that one player just flies away and it looks malicious. Great hit. I love watching this guy in defense

Nothing wrong with that! He had his arms wrapped and everything! Big hits shouldnt be penalised automatically. Rubbish.

Boom is right! Awesome tackle, nothing wrong with it. Man the refs are getting precious about the physical aspect of the game these days though, doesn't seem to be anything we as fans can do about it either.

Seriously, every single time a guy puts on a great tackle they call a penalty.
That was clearly not a shoulder charge, not high, perfect execution.
He smashed him and got punsihed for being too good at tackling!!

The laws simply states that a player must make some attempt to grasp the other player, that's it. Clearly the refs don't even know the goddamn laws.

Union is gettign softer all the time, maybe I'll just go watch league, at least they aren't trying to pansy up their sport.

Can anyone tell me the last time a big hit wasn't considered illegal by these fairy refs?
The game is getting far far too soft. It's embarassing showing this type of stuff to Yanks these days. It's as if physical tackles are banned

is this a fucking joke? Our game is turning to shit because referees need to get their face on television and feel the need to make an "impact"... SO many soft penalties and yellow cards this year already.

Good tackle. Not even a penalty.
The pitch ref didn't want to say anything at first (can't imagine he didn't see the tackle at full speed) and there's a penalty because of the touchline ref.
Sometimes, I just feel these guys just wait for the opportunity to get on tv.

That was a perfect tackle, nothing wrong with that whatsoever. How the hell are we supposed to be tackling at the moment? round the ankles and the defending player should throw himself under the ball carrier so the ground doesn't hurt him too much? I think the IRB has been watching a bit too much football lately.

On a side note: I think the ref's kit was too close in colour to the Sharks' kit. In the heat of the battle, it'd be hard to distinguish the ref from the Shark players, IMO.

the ref already put his arm up for penalty advantage. had nothing to do with the linesman.
we see replay after replay, the ref has to make a direct decision. it was the wrong one in this case which proves he isn't perfect.
by the way: love to see how the tackled player gets up immideately and joins the ruck. he's no sissy either

@ dutchrugbyplayer, well spotted. Taute is a serious prospect. One of the young guns coming through for the Lion under the tutorledge of Kiwis John Mitchell & Carlos Spencer.

Number 8 left arm is loose and is "looking for something" to tackle. Number 8 left it's arm steady and hi. It's a penalty, 50/50 yellow card.

i think linesmen should stick to wht they do best which is making sure the game i splayed in the field. other than that gotta leave it up to the refferee. that was such a great legal tackle man!

Jeez... I hate rugby league, but have to admit that their refs at least let the guys play... One half of the beauty of rugby is the flair and the other are the big tackles. Please, refs, don't spoil our game. Maybe you are not willing to take those hits, but we players certainly do.

It kills me when I see a great tackle like this get pulled up. The officials have forgotten that this is a contact sport.

what a hit im agreeing with everyone saying the refs are soft but its coming from the irb they need to seriously look at taking a leaf out of the rugby league book and have the ability to put players on report instead of penilising or carding players

Placed a pillow down below the guy so he landed on something soft?
Maybe he should have just stepped out of the way, "sorry, I'm too big and good at tackling, and I don't want to hurt you, so please proceed".

Man, thats a hit. He made up his mind and lunged, and Taute didnt try to avoid it or brace. Just BOOOOM! Alberts is a seriously big unit, and he has great silky skills for such a huge man. I was gutted when he left the Lions. Hope he catches the Bok selectors eye soon. Notice that neither Taute nor his teammates seem to have a problem with the hit.

Great hit - hard but perfectly legal (arm wrap included)....bad decision by the ref....
We had our first big shoulder charge injury this season in the English rugby league (Castleford v Warrington OR Huddersfield v Wigan) - guy broke his jaw in 2 places..
