Womens Rugby World Cup 2010 launch
Speaking ahead of the tournament, former World Cup winner and Sky Sports pundit Will Greenwood has said that it will be the biggest moment of the women's careers.
"For athletics it is the Olympics, for cricket it is the Ashes, for men's rugby it is the World Cup and for Women's Rugby it is this," said Greenwood.
"This is it, this is the pinnacle, and they are all looking in tremendous physical condition. There is always time to make the right decisions and you must have total faith in each other, total faith in your coach and trust your fitness to suceed."
The tournament will take place over 17 days and will be broadcast live around five continents, with the UK & Ireland having most games live on Sky Sports. Outside of that, you can watch the matches streamed live on rwcwomens.com . If you are in the UK or Ireland, you can get them delayed online, on demand 24 hours after the game.
There will be pressure on host nation England in front of their home crowd, an experience that Greenwood says will be very special for the women's team, especially as it's the World Cup.
"Our girls go into the tournament as second seeds and clearly the Kiwis are on the horizon and are always the team to beat but there are so many cracking teams and it is going to be a wonderful tournament," he said.
Has anyone got any insider info or predictions on who the top three sides will be in the end?
Note: Thanks to the IRB and rwcwomens.com

Some women's sports are better than the men's version to watch (e.g. racket/bat based games)
Some are similar (e.g. track and field)
Some aren't at the level (e.g. ball team sports)
And some of the even more appallingly crude comments here deserve to be deleted - thou they are revelatory in their own right.

I'd also love to see some highlights of the WRWC on here as they come, I know the style isn't exactly what we're used to, but think of them like the league clips or something of that nature, still very entertaining to watch.
Rowan DeBues August 20, 2010 3:44 am

Having said that though, I think RD should definitely post some highlights, since not only are we in the 21st century and therefore accepting of equality unlike James, but I bet you there are quite a few women who use RD too and they'd probably want to see it.
So guys who are complaining about not wanting to see second-class sports. Thats fine, just look at the post see that its the womens world cup, and either scroll up or scroll down.

As for an inside perspective...watch the ladies from the USA! They will give some of these "leading rugby nations" a good run for their money!
Fa Niete!
Ned2or3 August 20, 2010 4:22 am

The injuries they would brush off, and the commitment made astounded me week after week. Womens rugby is awesome and I so want my daughter to play.
Bring on the highlight RD!!!
PS james, piss off
Xavier August 20, 2010 4:35 am

PS - Nothing against USA female rugby, but as I was trying to explain the rules involved in tackling to a friend, tryed to look for a video on youtube and I get this bunch of american videos, mostly by women, who were just, plain wrong, like you wouldn't see in U12s
Chris August 20, 2010 5:58 am

...........
It's nothing to do with sexism. It's objective truth.
Female rugby isn't very good. Just as any contact sport for females is sub par.
A team of u16 boys would beat a female rugby team.
There's a reason the Heineken Cup final sells out 80k seat stadiums while division 3 teams struggle to attract 100 people. It's because people want quality. Fans want to see the very best up against the very best.
Only the overtly political correct care for womens rugby.
The attendance, or lack of it, will speak for itself.
Anonymous August 20, 2010 5:59 am

secondfive August 20, 2010 7:17 am

Anybody should be able to play rugby if they want and not be sneered at for doing it. By your logic no women should play any team sport because a team of males could beat them.. that just doesn't make sense.
Women's rugby will always be a different thing in many ways to men's rugby but it still gives the people involved similar satisfaction and rugby's a better sport by being open and inclusive. If you don't like it then don't bother with it, you won't be missed.
goodNumber10 August 20, 2010 7:46 am

Home soil, and England beat ferns last time out, and didn't win it with a last gasp try like the game before.
The standard is amazingly good, and it's really entertaining to watch, much more about evasion then the mens game which obviously has a lot more physical domination to it.
Rugbydump, Please make sure you cover this as much as you would any of the other Senior tournaments.
goodNumber10 August 20, 2010 7:51 am

A team of u16 boys would beat a female rugby team."
bigoted and ignorant.
I don't see the point in comparing the quality of womens rugby to men's rugby.
It's a different sport played at a different pace and with different skills in the same way 7's is different, and 10's is different and so on. and so on.
If you don't enjoy it don't watch it, if you do then great.
But what's the point in coming on the internet and belittling people who have achieved more in their life then hurling insults on the internet?
rehtroical qquestion there ins't any.
RD August 20, 2010 8:39 am

If you're not interested, as with any post on the site, you can simply ignore it. Some of the comments here are pretty disappointing. We should embrace the fact that more people are playing rugby, regardless of their skill level, gender, race, etc.

i'm not embarrassed to say that probably 90%, maybe even 100%, of the WRWC players would most likely kick my ass on the pitch :D
i guess those losers making sexist comments probably got their asses kicked by women - off the pitch...
Anonymous August 20, 2010 10:05 am

England or NZ to win. 3rd will be Australia, South Africa or Canada. With this tournament format teams don't get second chances and it does make it harder to predict.
RD, thanks for putting this up. Please put video highlights of the games themselves. Thanks. For the detractors, if you don't like it then don't watch it.
Cheers
Marc August 20, 2010 10:16 am

I would hazard a guess that the more unsavoury comments were likely just poor attempts at humour. I think the best thing to do, is just ignore them.

On the subject of men always being better, at the European Athletic Championships, the best person to watch there by a mile was Jess Ennis in the Heptathlon.
Personally I think England having now beaten the Ferns recently and it being a home tournament will take this one.
Get Highlights please RD

I know some old geezers might have to be dragged into the 21st century regarding women's participation in the sport, but you'd think they'd be more keen as I think the women's game now is closer to what rugby was like at the men's level many years ago. Yes, they do not have the size and strength of men, but that often translates into more passing and running into space rather than endless pick-and-goes and trying to run people over.
I also coach women and girls and am happy to see the standard getting better from year to year. Given that there is no professional women's rugby, that these internationals get as fit as they are and display the quality they do is quite commendable considering they're also juggling work / school / family.

mawie August 20, 2010 6:39 pm

(first off, HEJA SVERIGE! GO SWEDEN! the underdogs :) ni r BST!)
secondly,
Comparing womens rugby against mens is statistically and historically unfair. men have double (triple in sweden) the amount of players here i.e more games i.e more experience. for women its a lot harder, we have to work much longer in order to get to the same level. both clubs and internationally, especially internationally. for fucks sake.
dont be assholes. i know that we are not at all as physical as the men (we do have a few, the majority dont like being so physical. i'm one of the few who are quite physical) so yes, we can find it frustrating as well with missed tackled. frustrated being used LIGHTLY... everyone wants the womens rugby to improve in its standard and popularity especially women. but it takes time. things like this is the way to get there, it should be encouraged. and with sexist idiots like some of you its not entirely encouraging or easy. Women who are serious about their rugby love it just as much as the men, some are even better than those who think so fully of themselves. Coverage like this is needed in order to improve female rugby around the world. To be fair this is the only coverage i have ever seen on rugbydump since i found this site more than three years ago. So shut up with the "no more women rugby please" according to trends we get coverage once every three years, whilst men get coverage every day.
Dont get me wrong, i love watching men due to the fact that they are more clinical and professional and physical. Also because I'm so used to it as well. Seeing women play now and then would be such a nice change. I have NEVER seen a professional female rugby game, which is a shame. LET US have the time to reach the same level, its going to take time since nobody cares as much about the women as they do with men. So as i said before, we have to work longer and harder. I'd love to see it. There isnt only men in this sport guys, I thought men were a bit more mature than this. Chris, "A team of u16 boys would beat a female rugby team." You're being the BIGGEST idiot here. A team of u16 would get hammered by the teams here in sweden. We dont have so many, but why would that matter. The women here are very good at what they're doing. So dont generalize so much. You're making youself look stupid. I can speak for myself. I used to train with the Swedish rugby academy (prep for national teams) and im the only girl in the southern region which means that i have to train with the guys. I never feel left out because my tackles are exactly the same as the guys, so is my understanding and appreciation of the sport. I've outran and tackled down so many guys its not even worth saying that "ALL girls are worse than men". Some men are worse than girls, some girls are worse than men. Ive noticed that it has absolutely nothing to do with the gender. So many guys pussy out just as much as girls. i'm just saying. I can say this since i've played in both u16 (boys) and f17 (girls) teams.
AND LASTLY, all of these women, even the worst ranked in the tournament would kick your asses. I've played with and against these girls (sweden, germany, holland, england e.g) and its the toughest rugby I've ever played. Guys here are terrified by some of the girls here. So stop being so cocky, we deserve some respect. Because we respect you guys.
So thanks RD, for putting this up! Its encouraging for the underdogs in rugby, the women.

NZ are going to be unstoppable this year with England being the also ran.
Watch for Canada win pool C and to finish 3rd this year. It is the best team they have fielded ever and France is sputtering already, barely knocking over Sweden.

In the ambiguous sense a few words to the ladies here. I respect you like a sister and not like a - adopted from a sick stalker - mother child relation. I think real ladies fight against each other by by being unique, by concentrating on your own strength in the "fight" against another lady. You are special. Try to win because of your own achievements and not by mocking down a person in difficulties with a stalker, hacker fighting it out currently against the law. Do you have any idea what it is like?
Give the freedom to make his choice, these are things in life we cannot force.
For the competition, are there equal conditions such as speak to one like you speak to the other, give to one the same personal presence opportunity than to the other?
And in comparison to the men's "fight" remember a person forced and forces himself there and he just got it because of a misunderstanding. There would never have been an election, and if so, would you have participated or gone away?
