Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu try & Brett Deacon vs Tim Payne punch-up

A tense Aviva Premiership game took place between Gloucester and Wasps at Kingsholm on the weekend, with the home side taking it 22-20 after two big Nicky Robinson penalties. Featured here is the try of the match from Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, and the fight between forwards Tim Payne and Brett Deacon.
You can view the rest of the highlights from the game on the e-player on the sidebar, as well as highlights of all the other Premiership matches. These two incidents in particular were requested as many of you wanted to see them again.
The try to Fuimaono-Sapolu was a bit of a strange one as he managed to brush off four would-be tacklers before gassing it to the line. It was a mix of lackluster defending and determined, powerful running. The hand-offs were pretty decent too. Overall, it was a great try from a young guy who looked impressive all afternoon.
The second clip shown here is off the skirmish that broke out between Tim Payne and Brett Deacon, after it looked as though Payne had stamped on a player on the ground, only for Deacon to stamp on him in what looked like a schoolyard disagreement.
It soon got serious as punches were thrown, but it ended as quickly as it started, with both players calming down for referee Andrew Small to send them to the sideline for ten minutes.
Gloucester replacement flyhalf Nicky Robinson landed two great penalty kicks from the same spot late in the second half to take them into the lead, while Wasps flyhalf Dave Walder came up short with a long kick of his own that landed inches below the crossbar. That meant Gloucester took it at the death, picking up their second win of the season.
Also, these two clips are posted as a playlist, so you can either watch them one after the other, or skip around as you please.

Nice bit of aggro too. Pity nothing landed :)

with islanders, u should never tackle them high as they are very powerful with their arms.
concerning deacon - payne clash, the 2 yellow are deserved. But payne will be happy with that as he clearly began in stamping a gloucester player leg on the ground

as for the try, if he hadnt got it he'd have been very greedy looking...

That said, it was an embarassing defence from Wasps as a whole as if nobody wanted to make the cover hoping someone else would do the job (that's not even to mention the hand off).
t0m0 September 28, 2010 12:38 pm

How either of them got selected i have no idea. Zero talent and too much gym - the problem for many an England forward in the past 5 years.
That aside, i often wonder if it is awkward when two players who have previously fought meet up at (god forbid) their next England training?

He's got nothing to be embarrased about, as it's nowt to do with the 13, it was fluetys tackle to make and he drifted off the man allowing him to blindside Waldouk, who was rightly so drifting out onto the winger.
He just trips over his own feet as he's turning back off balance when he gest the shove.
John F September 28, 2010 6:01 pm

As for Waldouck, he runs some superb lines and his defence is pretty good. I've rarely heard opposition fans call him overrated. He's been making a very good impact for the past four seasons. Wasps on the other hand have been inconsistent for the past two and to a lesser extent the past four.
Like I said, I can't explain this one. None of them seemed to know what to do, lack of organisation and standing off. Pathetic effort collectively as a team.

then in the second when hes clearly standing a yard away from the two players brawling he does not even bother to help out his teammate or atleast break it up!

Deacon has actually been fairly good for Glos. He's got himself about the place and his workrate has been impressive. On the other hand, it's the same old rubbish from Payne that I've come to expect, he deserved a few jabs for that. Fortunately for England with Cole, Mahler and Doran Jones on the fringes of the squad and Sheridan coming back to form we don't have to see his inept scrummaging for much longer.

and Bakkies is just a lazy thug with the mind of a 4 year old suffering ADD. He slaps, headbutts and claws his way through games and then looks stunned when he is reported and banned!
Nicko September 29, 2010 1:20 am

Instead of ranting on about poor defense, maybe we should look at how well the player did to have the wasp line second guessing then bust through... Classy stuff.

Have you watched him play recently? He's always involved in off the ball stuff. He tried to push around Tuilagi against leicester and then got smashed by him later in the match. During this match he got tackled into touch by Sharples and then started trying to push him around. Sharples had the common sense just to laugh him off. I think he's under the impression that he can make up for a lack of defensive awareness with this.
The whole point with the Aussie thing was that he went away on a tour and against top class opposition his lack of skills became apparent really quickly and it doesn't look like things have improved. If he ever got a call up would you put your money on him against Tri Nations wingers, not a chance.

Never seen him go toe to toe with someone the same size in a fair fight. John Smit and Victor Matfield are players a Saffa can be proud of. Bakkies Botha is a violent thug who has no place on the field unless you think injuring people outwith the laws of Rugby or indeed most countries laws is acceptable....
Just my opinion though :P
Von September 29, 2010 5:19 pm

@ t0m0 towards the top of these comments: you're mistaking Brett Deacon here for his brother Louis. "Little" Deacon has only played for England at age group level.
Von September 29, 2010 5:27 pm

I think this clip has emphasised how much of a pus5y Tom Varndell really is, in the first clip his tackling is poor as usual,
then in the second when hes clearly standing a yard away from the two players brawling he does not even bother to help out his teammate or atleast break it up!
If you want to stick your head between Payne and Deacon's swinging fists I'm sure they'd be only too keen to accommodate it. If you ask me Varndell was well off keeping out of it.

And as far as him accomplishing more than me.... That's not to hard considering I'm a 21 year old playing 2nd grade and studying business, so you'll understand if I'm not that offended, lol.
@NiWiTa good to see someone with some proper rugby knowledge, the Botha incidents speak for them self!
Anonymous September 30, 2010 1:12 am

I'd love to see him go toe to toe with Brad Thorn or Rocky Elsom.
But we all know that's never going to happen with that pussy slapping and headbutting halfback's from behind! Lol

He may not win, but it wouldn't scare him to have a go.
He's a lunatic, with poor discipline, but you can't call him soft, he's not.
Benson October 01, 2010 8:12 am

Okay, just read that idiot anonymous comment about small brits. One muppet who lets down the team, as usual.
My opinion is that Botha most definitely carries his weight and doesn't need Matfield to string him along. They do compliment eachother, but to insinuate that Botha wouldn't be chosen if Matfield wasnt around is absolutely thoughtless and misinformed.
Don't base you opinions on the player on less than ten dirty incidents in his long and successful career.
Headcase for sure, but a great, old fashioned rugby player too.
John F October 01, 2010 12:38 pm

"Have you watched him play recently?"
Yes, I'm a Wasps fan. Some scuffles happen but I don't recognise the player you describe. Ok, so you don't rate him, but using the example of 4 years ago and then saying that he hasn't improved is clearly rubbish.
