Tri Nations 2010 - By the Numbers
As we all know, the All Blacks came up trumps as they played some fantastic rugby throughout and showed that they're back to their best. While South Africa and Australia tried in vain, they couldn't quite match the tempo and resilience shown by the men from New Zealand.
Total Rugby have come up with this interesting feature that highlights the top individual performers in the tournament in terms of the numbers. Broken down into categories, it goes through the top points scorers, the largest amount of metres run, lineouts won, top number of tackles, most offloads, turnovers, and then the top try scorers.
In most of the categories you can make an educated guess as to who leads the way. There's one or two surprise players showing up though, as well as an 'old timer' leading the way for the backs. No doubt the players mentioned will play a huge role in the World Cup next year.

Plus I want to see the Pumas cry when constantly on the wrong side of big defeats.

You gotta love Mills though, he really has been an amazing FB over the past few years, despite a lot of competition from Jane and now Dagg.
Good stuff Millsy!!
WelshOsprey October 05, 2010 11:02 pm

Yeah against NZ maybe, south africa & australia were shocking so not really worried about them so much this year.
Pffft October 05, 2010 11:39 pm

You knucleheads say that every year about whoever comes second or third in the tri nations, and every year you have to eat your words.
Just because NZ, the greatest team in rugby beats Aus and South Africa, it doesn;t mean for a second that vastly less skilled and dangerous European teams can do it.
South Africa and Aus will still win the majority of their games on tour, as they almost always do.
Wales will agin get thrashed, and again Welsh people will see positives in their defeats, like they always do.
Something like "We played really good for those first 40 minutes, sure we lost by 20 points at home to a developmental squad, but if we can just play for 80 minutes those dastardly Souther Hemisphere teams will be quaking in their boots..."
Les Bleus October 05, 2010 11:57 pm

I wonder who'd top the "highest number of minor breakdown transgressions without sanction" count?!?! :)
I wonder who'd get the ''highest amount of headbutts without being carded'' count.
Oh no he didn't.

Just curious, do you people have "fantasy rugby" the way we do with NFL in the states? If so, then I'd think statistics like these would be important...ugh, hopefully it doesn't become as bad as the NFL, though, where every play results in some sort of record being set and statistics being thrown up on the television.
WelshOsprey October 06, 2010 1:00 am

Haha, sure whatever Wales guy.

I said absolutely nothing about winning or beating them, just that NZ are streets ahead of anyone at the moment.

Don't be deceived, the Springboks started the 2010 Tri-Nations with 8 of their 2009 starting players out. Still, if you're talking about blooding players before the World Cup, then it was a success. de Jongh, Aplon and Hougaard all shone and should all be in the 22 for the World Cup.

Wolfman21 October 06, 2010 3:33 am

If we are talking about World Cups, Australia are the best with 2 wins and one final.
If we are talking about the best team in the world based on consistent success, it is the All Blacks.
Was interested to see Burger's stats - he is more rounded than I thought - not so against a shift to number 8 for him any-more.
Tackles McCaw is a great player and quickly heading to the best of all time in his position.

You were better off sticking with Cipriani but you morons let him come player super rugby instead.
LOL at English Rugby.
Anonymous October 06, 2010 3:51 am

Yes, people stereotype Burger as a basher, not true, fantastic player.
Loose trio for the Boks should be Brussow, Smith and Burger with Spies coming off the bench.
Anonymous October 06, 2010 3:51 am

LOL at SH rugby what have you guys won since the boks won the 07 world cup? Nothing the NH have dominated, the french even smashed the so called mighty all blacks last year.
Pfft October 06, 2010 3:54 am

England and NZ have won the exact same number, one world cup each. 87 was just as much a world cup as any other, you idiots.
Australia has the best history at the world cup anyway, two wins and one lost final, while South Africa is second with two wins from two finals.
If your talking about games won over the history of rugby, it's NZ easily, followed by South africa.
If you're talking about current results, the world rankings are where you need to look.
The tri-nations have won about 75% of all games against non-tri nations opposition since 2003.
They regularly spank the European teams (who get the odd win then crow about it for years).
Currently the rankings read :
1. NZ
2. Aus
3. SA
Any way you look at it, it's obvious.

At world cups then, the smart money will be put on South Africa, even if the politicians and coaching staff get in the players way.
Anonymous October 06, 2010 4:00 am

The rankings were introduced and ranked by the SH thats why non of the NH are ever on top. But its ok come AI its going to be another dominate preformance by the NH England espically and another lose for the SH teams. We have Abs up first and it looks like its going to be another lose for them. Can they even win a game up here? The abs are over rated and a Joke to world rugby.
Bill October 06, 2010 4:00 am

That includes two wins over France, as well as wins over England, Ireland, Wales and Itlay.
England hasn't beaten them in about 6 years, I can't even remember when that was (2003?).
England are the least of anyone's worries.
England has won one game against Australia in the last 5. One in five, that's a winning percentage of 20%, meaning Australia has beaten them 80% of the time in the last three years.
Shit, Ireland and Sctoland have never beaten NZ, and Wales did it once 50 years ago.
Learn something about rugby.

Iv never seen a player get more jitters than toby flood, I'm always happy when that idiot martin johnson selects him over Wilko.
SH Flyhalfs (Carter, Steyn, Cooper, Giteau, Slade) would all walk into the England 10 jersey.
England can't even win the 6 nations (most piss-poor tournament around)
England have done dick all since 2003, yea that's a great winning record.

Anonymous October 06, 2010 4:52 am

Morne Steyn, all he can do is kick, very boring fly-half to watch.
Carter and Cooper are the two best in the world right now. Cooper is breaking the mould for fly-halves, very exciting to see him play.
Also, England has nothing to be proud of. The Aviva prem is the worst pro club rugby league in the world, stats will back this up.
Ireland and France lead the NH charge yet again for the AI, both capable of pulling off wins over all three SH teams, that cant be argued.
As for Scotland, you played alright in the 6nations, but lets be real, you guys are very bad, wales are not much better.
Enjoy lads
;)
Desmond Smit October 06, 2010 5:26 am

Wilkinson was kicking at around 87% going into the 2003 world cup. Morne Steyn is currently kicking at 100%
And yes, Steyn is such a boring flyhalf, that's why the Bulls were putting 50 points past most of their opposition in the s14 and Steyn was in the top 10 try scorers... right? South Africa has the talent, the all SA super rugby final showed that... they just need to get rid of those three idiots that are coaching the national side.

For someone from the home nations, anon, you are an embarassment when it comes to rugby knowledge, and this coming from a 3rd string nation citizen.
There's no harm in being buyist when it comes to your country, I thought Portugal should have gone further in the last Football World Cup, but there's a difference between that and being delusional

2)The NH teams are going to thrash the SH teams.
3)The games in the amateur days were 'friendlies' so don't count?
4)1987 not being a real world cup. Even though the NZ rugby team was way ahead of any other nation in terms of proffesionalism...
5)Toby Food being the best fly-half in the world!?!
Please stop, you are making the NH rugby fans look like idiots. I am more than willing to accept that the SH are much better at international level. However, i would also like the SH to accept that their players are much fitter and better, not because they are much more skillfull or better athletes, but because they are much fitter due to their pre-season being longer and their actual season being MUCH shorter. For example a NH player can play up to 40 games in a season before the summer tours have even come around!
Disagree if you want but i really don't think a James Hook or Brian O'Driscol is far behing any SH player.

The savour of ENGLISH rugby as Stephen Jones put it the Greatest Kiwi hater in the world.
Your back line is to light weight look at the AB's
Weepu, DC, Nonu, Smith, Jane, Mills and Dagg then we could go Jimmy, DC,SBW,Fruen,Gear, dagg and Ranger
England Little back line would be shitting there pants at this BEAST of a backline.

The SH is obviously better than us...the world cup will be interesting. Aside from the french, our only chance is to defend the SH sides to death.
Fingers crossed!
Josh October 06, 2010 2:33 pm

The Scots are a brilliant team under Andy Robinson, they just need the infrastrcuture to be able to continue this rapid growth.
The thing with them aswell, is that yes, they beat the Australians and the Irish, but you don't hear a lot of it. I don't hear a lot of Scots mouthing off about an odd win, like the English do with their minimal win rate over Australia / All Blacks, or the Welsh at how they ''nearly beat the All Blacks''.
Scotland is a very likeable rugby team for these reasons.

Les Bleus - although you may be right about the underlying reasons for people hating the English, it's a bit rich coming from a Frenchman (assuming you are). The French were just as busy during the Empire-building colonising days. They just weren't as good at it.
