Sebastien Chabal's big tackle on Jamie Heaslip

Leinster got their Heineken Cup campaign off to a positive start as they beat Racing Metro 38-22 with a stylish performance in the Pool 2 opener at the RDS. The match was played at a great pace and there were plenty of big tackles. This is just one of them from the opening passage of play.
Leinster scored five tries while the visitors only managed the one in what was a fascinating and enjoyable game to watch. Both sides bashed eachother on numbers occasions, with French talisman Sebastien Chabal putting in the first big hit of the match early on.
It was Jamie Heaslip who was on the receiving end as Leinster started well with a serious of pick and drives before releasing the backs. By the time it got to Heaslip out wide, Chabal had lined up and put in a quality tackle, smashing back the big British & Irish Lions number eight.
There were plenty of other notable highlights, including Rob Kearneys try, Francois Steyns massive penalty, and then a few hits from Isa Nacewa that actually went in on Chabal himself. If theres time over the next few days Ill try get something up showing all of them. For now, heres another nice Chabal moment for the archives.
Please be patient while waiting for highlights or clips as this weekend was one of the busiest on the rugby calendar in a long time. If you have specific requests, get in touch via the contact page or post them in the requests section on the forum.

@Fry & Anon, the RDS is not actually Leinsters home ground, it's an adopted home ground. Their proper home ground is Donnybrook. When Donnybrook was having a new stand built a few years back Leinster moved to the RDS. It's a suitable little ground that is only 10 mins walk from Donnybrook. It has a great atmosphere and is always full to near its 18,000 capacity, even for Magners League. It would not make sense to play Heinken pool games in Lansdowne as it would only be half full. Occasionally a big game is played there but in general terms it's better to have a full house in the RDS than a half full Lansdowne. They have not returned to Donnybrook because the RDS has a better capacity at present.

That word has no real meaning under the laws.
The law simpyl states that a player must make an attempt to 'grasp' the other player.
Just an attempt, they don't vene have to suceed for it be legal.
Textbook tackle.
As people have said though, Chabal is definatly a one-trick pony.
Great at the big hits and makes the odd decent run, but doesn't really have anything else goin for him.
mise October 10, 2010 10:06 pm

That does not say much for Racing's penetration at all, esp as Leinster's defence has been poor enough in the Magners.

Yeah, he's no Harinordoquy at 8 or Burger at flank, but he had, by most measures, a decent game. In fact, Jamie Heaslip - a world-class number 8 - didn't really have a great game either, nor did he put in any especially big hits. So what's the point?
Isa Nacewa, though. I hope he stays at Leinster for a long time to come...what a great asset he is.
Anonymous October 10, 2010 10:50 pm

Heaslip is over-rated though. Good player, who has a great set of skills and attributes but seriously lacks the dynamism and athletisism of other no. 8's.
Chabal lacks almost everything but his beard is immense. That in itself justifies his plaudits.

Did you read the comments, in all honesty, i think they were very reasonable.....
I like chabal, he has a good presence and plays hard, but like everyone has said, his game is somewhat lacking at times...
...In all honesty the way you are replying to the comments it seems like if i said 'peter stringer wouldnt make a very good second row' you'd still be 'offended'..

My comment was more directed towards the few who were saying Chabal doesn't really offer anything except an "odd" hard tackle, and I was pointing out that he did offer more than that during the game. I'm not saying Lievremont should be starting him against the ABs or anything, just that in this game, he did what a number 8 should while he was on the pitch.

Maybe for the next match, depends on the visitors also - unfortunately the french don't really travel in numbers.. unless it's the national side.

He's been a super captain for racing and has lead them from just promoting to the top of the top 14 in less than two years, I say pay a little respect to the guy.
About the match: Leinster were superb, Racing played their first game ever in the H-Cup, against one of the best teams in Europe and with two very important players missing so I think the scoreline is not too bad...
Flooz October 11, 2010 8:48 am

He always put a lot of heart and commitment in his game, even if he had become a commercial icone.
Concerning the match, Leinster were superior and it wasn't a surprise.
It was the bapteme of Racing with the H-Cup and i think that the absence of Hernandez and wisniewski didn't helpin the creativity. Fillol plays normally at scrum...
That said, Leinster will be one of the usual favorites, but be careful to racingmen, they can be a dangerous threat for Clermont or Saracens in this "death pool"
Flooz October 11, 2010 8:52 am

He is a fantastic N8 but it's true that he often gives a knee kick to every players who had scored tries (vs Toulouse, Boks, AB's...). A bit coward and never sanctionned

NiWiTa October 11, 2010 12:23 pm

....re Chabal I've never seem him play regularly enough to comment on his wider game. I love that the big fella can still fling a bell-ringer of a tackle though :)

jay October 11, 2010 12:46 pm

Same thing as when he was with Bourgoin (short hair and a light beard), got better within the english championship and yet he's far way from the best flankers of the world (mainly due to his lack of hands and technique).
SO yeah good offensive tackle but that's that.... just like when he was 20 or rather before the media decided to make him popular.
Flooz October 11, 2010 1:44 pm

i didn' say Heaslip is a dirty player, i say that it's a pity that this very good player often do this type of action.
Sorry, I had forgotten that he received a red card vs AB's.
But i recall few matchs vs Boks (with the lions) and many others (with leinster or ireland), where he always fall with his knees on the player's back after a try.
I just find it ridiculous, dangerous and unnecessary.
Just have a look to his reaction after the 1st and 2nd boks tries in the 2nd test
mise October 11, 2010 8:59 pm

This is a regular problem, and it is 100% not specific to Heaslip.
Loads of players seem to get away with doing it, and have done for years. Its almost a bonus point result after conceeding a try!
Needs to be spotted by refs and acted upon.

I'm not here to argue, but all of what you said is false.I read your comment and watched the tries from the first and second test and there isn't a shred of evidence to suggest that what you've said is true. The only thing Heaslip does is nudge Pietersen because of momentum and afterwards checks to see if he's okay. Please stop spreading lies.

Watching that reminded me of what a great series that was. Two great teams, one winner.

None of them very violent so he doesn't get cited, both of them purely intentional and malicious.
Awesome player nonetheless
Anonymous October 12, 2010 8:11 am

But the second one... I'll have to agree with the anonymous before me.
What's the point of doing this ? The intention is obviously to hurt (surely not to injury, but to hurt) the player that just scored. And this cannot be accepted.
Flooz October 12, 2010 9:41 am

it's to show that this type of actions, not always violent are a bit malicious and coward.
I've seen plenty but i can't remember of every.

flooz...u are right!!!! what heaslip does after the 2 tries against the `boks is an utter disgrace!!! he must be sanctioned! call the citing commissioner pronto!!! actually forget the citing commissioner...call the cops cause there could be a case for a GBH charge! actually bring back the death penalty!
this is rugby...not soccer! these incidents aren`t malicious and he`s never gonna hurt any1!
now do every1 a favour and "get a grip"
Flooz October 12, 2010 4:49 pm

Impressive how some lads seem to be brain deficient, here. Sorry to have shocked some obvious Heaslip fans.
Just for a recall: RD is a fo-rum. u know this curious place where people can debate of any subjects.
Subjects like rugby on every forms.
Also impressive, how people like to transform words from others. I never say that it was actions to sanction, but actions that the ref should spot in order to avoid unnecessary brawls or injuries.
u can find it a "soccer" thing, i find it was interesting to spot...
but as u seem very open to debate, yeah.. "get a grip"!
Anonymous October 13, 2010 5:23 pm

To see this alone, you would think it was the defining moment of the game. I wasn't.
Oh, and Flooz, yes, it is a forum and it is about debate. It is not just about targeting unsupported accusations against one player or team.
e.g. All Springboks are dirty players who eye gouge and should be watched by all refs and assistants. Proof? See the video of Schalk Burger sticking his finger in Lions wing eye at start of 1st test. This isn't proof? Well, no, but neither are your posts or links
Flooz October 14, 2010 9:50 am

debate is impossible with anonymous, vicious people...
