Midweek Madness - The Northampton Saints 30m scrum!
Saints picked up a bonus point as they scored four tries in a game that illustrated the power of their pack. "The tight five were phenomenal again," said Phil Dowson.
"It's almost impossible to defend against scrummaging like that and it gave us a great platform. We said last week we'd set ourselves some high standards and we had to back them up against a tough challenge from the north east.
"To get two bonus-point wins in a row is really pleasing. We need to keep pushing on, keep learning and make sure we do it week in and week out," added Dowson.
Dowsons pack of forwards completely dominated Newcastle, as can be seen here with this incredible 30m scrum that started on halfway and ended with an easy penalty kick for Stephen Myler. Directly from the restart, they where then at it again as they mauled up field with ease.
"We were overpowered in the scrum and from that base it's impossible to build up any momentum. Either Northampton were really, really good in that area or we were really poor," said Newcastle boss Alan Tait, who went on to say Northampton gave us a good lesson today.
To add insult to injury, Newcastle are being investigated by the RFU after they allegedly abused the use of front row replacements during the first half. Comments were made by their forward coach at the break that a player was taken off to give him a break from the pummeling up front.

That was some drive by the big fellas...Newcastle are having a dreadful year. Not sure they will be able to stay up this season which will be a shame for Rugby Union in Northern England.

The salute of NH teams will be synonym of a good scrummaging, and ireland, wales, france or england have this in their blood.
A bemol, who put prozac in newcastle props water bottles? :)

so yeah i dont think NH teams have that much to fear from autumn tests, at least upfront

Also, the player who made the tackle (number 2) after the maul came around the side. Seems like a pretty clear penalty to me.
Also, Flooz, not as sure about the French, English or Welsh scrums, but the Irish one isn't going too well and I'm not sure how it'll hold up to SA or NZ.

I agree with some of the recent comments about the chance of NH teams to win vs SH will come from the scrummaging. Unfortunately, the lack of common refereeing on this part and the continuous change will not be of help and guess where the WC will be.
Still this should not be a excuse for NH teams which on international level, have hardly proposed any enthusiastic /attacking approach in their games.
Still I hope they can pick up the pace and their games, starting with the upcoming international tests

2nd time round it was Ryan Powell who knocked on.
PS Dickson should be in the England set up.

Scrum makes the difference.

That must've been the most humiliating sight I've seen on a rugby pitch, ever!
Looking at the way Newcastle have been playing, they deserve to be relegated this season. Would be a great loss to northern rugby, though...

1) The Falcons 2nd row was abysmal; arses up in that air and didn't stay square at all. No help against a concenbtrated shove.
2) In the maul the guy holding the ball at the back came unbound about 10 times (remember bound is the whole arm to shoulder) and should have been told to run
3) @anonymous above: the rule is you get two chances to use the ball from the maul if it gets stopped twice you must use it
PS put your bloddy name on the post
