Shane Williams out for 10 weeks following Francois Steyn tackle
Williams, his countrys all time leading try scorer and the third highest try scorer in Test history with 53, was flung and dumped by Springbok center Francois Steyn, causing a dislocation of the left shoulder as he landed awkwardly.
"Truth is, I just dont know yet what Ive done to the shoulder. Ive had an operation on both of them in the past to clean them out, but because I have never dislocated my shoulder before Im not sure how bad it is," Williams said.
"I went down, heard it pop and then when I rolled over on it, I heard another pop, so Im assuming it has popped out and popped back in. But Im not a doctor. Its as sore as hell at the moment, almost unbearably so. Its like toothache and Ive had to take quite a few painkillers," he added.
Wales physiotherapist Mark Davies said later that a scan revealed what was suspected the shoulder dislocated then immediately moved back into place. Williams will undergo exploratory surgery to assess the damage.
"We know he will be out of action now for a minimum of 10 weeks," Davies said.
He will miss Wales remaining November internationals, including meetings with Fiji and New Zealand. Theres also a real chance that the 33 year old will be out for the start of the Six Nations too.
Wales now have just George North, the eighteen year old, to rely on as they search for another wing to join him for the next few games. Leigh Halfpenny is injured, so the talk is that Chris Czekaj, Will Harries, or Aled Brew may take the left wing berth.

Wales will really miss him, a shame too since for his age he's still playing really really well.

Bad luck for Shane and the Welsh rugby, they really do not need this at this moment.
Great player, hope to see him soon at his best once again.

Unfortunate for Williams, I'm sure he's been inserted into the ground much harder than that on many occasions before.
Big loss for Wales - he's got that talismanic quality, you hear the crowd roar as soon as he gets his hands on the ball.
Still, it'll give them a chance to try out some options for the post-Shane era, which can't be too far away.

This could be a blessing in disguise ahead of the world cup for Wales to expand their depth.

In any case, this doesn't bode well for Wales, but the upside is maybe they can keep cycling through wingers until they find one who can actually step like Williams.
I wonder...does Gio Aplon happen to have any Welsh in him? :)
Anonymous November 16, 2010 5:37 pm

Agreed. I hate his style of play and the way he is used by SA. I'd say stick Aplon on the wing and find another full back,

czekaj, harries, brew LOL what a load of rubbish.. none of those are world class and they never will be.

Shows how stupid the coaches are for not resting him.
Don't worry though, he'll be back in Rwc 2011 to score 8 more tries.

*waves*
see you later then I'm sure you'll be missed :)
I don't really care I'm just pointing out that a Judo throw using the leg to tip someone's body weight is illegal, but it's seldom if ever called in this day and age - much like feeding the scrum.
Scotsdale November 17, 2010 1:16 pm

Goodnumber10, this wasn't a jude throw though. He didn't use his leg at all. Watch it again.

big loss for wales, great player and he'll be missed.
Euan November 18, 2010 12:32 pm

Judo Throw,illegal but not uncommon.
As a black belt in Judo I can tell you; that is NOT a Judo throw. It is also legal so you're talking rubbish.
