England bashed by the 'Boks at Twickenham
The Springboks gave the Red Rose team a tough lesson in muscular, bullying rugby with a physical display at the set-piece that England could not handle.
Eleven points from Morne Steyn and two tries from replacement flanker Willem Alberts and wing Lwazi Mvovo saw the Springboks earn their seventh consecutive test win over the home side who had no answer to the South African physicality.
Clearly hurting from the shock defeat to Scotland last weekend, the Springboks were quick out of the blocks, and despite the absence of Schalk Burger, John Smit, Fourie de Preez and Bryan Habana, the Springboks hit England with everything but the kitchen sink.
The first-half was a turgid affair, with only an outstanding defensive performance from Ben Youngs and Courtney Lawes, the standout players of Englands series, denying South Africa a try through their captain Victor Matfield. Two penalities from Toby Flood and Steyn saw the half-time scores at 6-6.
South Africas dominance eventually told in the shape of tries for replacement forward Willem Alberts and wing Lwazi Mvovo that confirmed the win for the visitors. Ben Foden scored a consolation interception try, although the missed conversion from centre Mike Tindalls epitomised the England performance.
England manager Martin Johnson was frustrated was his sides poor execution: "There were too many mistakes. Some of them were forced by their pressure but you can't compound them and let the opposition keep coming at you," he said.
"We just invited pressure back onto ourselves. Test match rugby is pretty basic and pretty simple but you have to execute the fundamentals under pressure. Too many times we didn't secure the ball. Those errors just hurt us."
South African head coach Peter De Villiers, however, admitted he was initially not so confident his side would overcome the in-form England.
"We saw the character. We stood up for ourselves. Against Wales we won the game with our defence. Tonight we won it with our attack.
"This is a big win for the country, a big win for the team. We put a marker down so we can build next year a bit easier."

It was a very fustrating game to watch.
England made every mistake and penalty they could. Not an enjoyable game at all, but thems the breaks
Maximus November 28, 2010 1:02 pm

hahaha very good RD!
But I think they couldn't use it because the Australians were using it on us Frenchies...

dont like blaming the ref but found myself shouting at him alot this game dont know if it was because it was a terrible game watch with a lot of mistakes from both sides or did anyone else think the ref had a shocker?

Ted November 28, 2010 1:46 pm

For England it was a return to the same faults of the last eight years: a terrible line out, no idea how to play the ref, no clue what to do with the ball in the oppo 22. Once Flood and Croft went off nobody else seemed to know what to do.
England's autumn:
vs NZ 6/10
vs Aus 8/10
vs Samoa 7/10
vs SA 5/10
A better autumn than any we've had since 2003 but still a long way from what the biggest, richest RFU in the world should be producing.
I would say the world cup is looking interesting. It seems like most sides can beat most others on their day.

Sander November 28, 2010 4:04 pm

England looked lost, lacked direction and didn't play the referee at all.
Found myself shaking my head when Charlie Hodgson came on. Nothing personal against the guy, but is he really the 3rd choice England fly-half?
Anonymous November 28, 2010 5:09 pm

boks brought you back down to earth you pommy faggots.
Huh!! the 3rd November 28, 2010 5:17 pm

SA did to Eng what they did to Ire; Strangulation. Although, even though Foden's try was against the run of play, it did reflect the game. Not too much between them.
Jimbo November 28, 2010 5:22 pm

nice to see the comment above is in line with the rest of this thread. Could this be an Aussie? Well played SA. Thoroughly deserved win and goes to show that you can't keep a good team down. As an England supporter I'm glad this happened. Showed that we still have a long way to go if we want to compete in the WC next year. All SH are massive threats and can not be counted out. Matfield was awesome, botha not so much. A good win SA!

As an English supporter it was the most frustrating game to watch. Dont really think the ref had a bad game,in fact he had prety good game.It was just us who made allota maistakes and never pitched.Tom Croft is key, when he and Flood went of,it was as good as over.Lawes played supurb, did well against world class locks.
Imagine the Boks forwards and the all blacks backs. Now that would be a team.I just really think the boks have the best pack of forwards in the world.
(u-p)rick November 28, 2010 7:08 pm

After the scottish game i had no doubts the english team would be punished....the boks had something to prove and the team in their way was england, not to mention how weak the english team is already......
Missed the match so looking forward to the highlights!

He has played pretty well all autumn
katman November 28, 2010 7:15 pm

Lwasi Mvovo is a great talent. Hope he stays in the Bok picture. So too Willem Alberts. In fact, I'd start with Alberts at 8 and bring Spies on for the last 25 minutes, when the opposition is badly wounded and scared.
For England, Croft was great until his injury. And Courtney Lawes is a keeper - gets stuck in all over the pitch. The backs looked flat and lifeless though. Is Tindall really the best there is?
JPM November 28, 2010 7:46 pm

Still, I feel as though England are going in the right direction. When England got killed 45-6 two years ago in the same fixture it truly was men against boys...they have progressed.
Still, Tindall and Hape are too similair...both big bashers with no creativity. There is nobody to unlock the defense. Losing Croft and Flood did not help....
For SA, Ruan Pienaar is a real clever player who rarely makes a bad decision...and their pack played very well....Juan Smith and Bismark Du Plessis excellent. They definitely out muscled us. Funny to see Spies get thrown into touch by Ben Foden..the smallest guy on the pitch!
Also there is no way Ashton should have stayed on...he was clearly out of it and did nothing after the his head clash...see second Bok try...he was in la la land.
Anonymous November 28, 2010 8:10 pm

Not taking anything away from spies though,he played good and drove our forwards back on defense
I agree with anon,SA truly does have great pack upfront.Adding a Schalck Burger to that mix,you cant get more physical than that.
We are getting better under Martin Johnson, but we have to expect a bad game every once in a while.Baby steps... and then one day really soon... we'll be back!YNWA!

Tom November 28, 2010 11:26 pm

That's what's meant by the term, the Boks were more physical than England.

Shark Attack November 28, 2010 11:51 pm

Scoreline could have been a 50 pointer but for poor bokke finishing.
I honestly just think England made the mistake of tryin to drag us into a trial of brute strenght and physicality.
Guess I shouldnt complain
Must say that Courtney Lawes looks like quite the promising player
Anonymous November 29, 2010 12:24 am

Why dont we have the backs to match the forwards? I think we do but due to injury and very poor team selections we didnt bring the majority of them. Khirschner and Jacobs should have stayed home (Stegman aswell)Guess they dont select them selves well certainly not by the way they normally play. Jacobs propably didnt accumulate 1 hour of playing time during the whole CC.
Like that they took a guy like Mvovo on tour and scored on his debute. Reminds me of another winger that scored 4 tries on his debute against Australia and was almost never seen in a Bok jersey again. Hopefully Mvovo has more luck.

Fourie Du Preez is to Springbok rugby as Dan Carter is to NZ
Jaque Fourie had a massive season with the Stormers and is certainly one of the best centres in the business.
Heinrich Brussow is our version of Richie McCaw or David Pocock. Marginal on the rule book but very good at getting away with it and a nightmare to play against.
Pierre Spies a force to fear moving forwards.
Gerhard van den Heever - watch this space
Come WC time we'll be ready even with PdV. We have a backline to do it.
The Bulls own Super Rugby. Might bring Courtney Lawes to Loftus when Matfield hangs up the boots.
Wessel November 29, 2010 11:02 am

I hope the Boks hire an Eddie Jones to sort out the backline. And quick.
Wessel November 29, 2010 11:08 am

During his reign at Natal their backs were not very creative it has to be said.
katman November 29, 2010 11:30 am

Muir is useless. Gary Gold is useless. And De Villiers is useless. I suspect those three were more surprised by this win than anyone else.
Hey Wessel. Hoe lykit.
edbok November 29, 2010 12:51 pm

The big question for next year is, and it has always been, will Fourie du Preez again have a transformative influence on this side, and turn them again into world beaters.
I don't agree with all the comments about Dick Muir above - he did a very good job coaching the Sharks, that was an exciting young side that should have delivered the S14 in 2007. He was also a very intelligent inside centre, he was pivotal when Mallet's side was unbeatable.
He stunk up the Lions though; he should never have had this job as well as the Bok assistant job. And the backline selections this year have been abysmal.
But he has stuff on his CV that I still buy, PdV not so much.
Wessel November 29, 2010 12:53 pm

Anonymous November 29, 2010 12:54 pm

I really didn't think that SA did anything special and as many comments have pointed out - it just goes to show that the WC will be exciting as any team can beat any team right now.
England had some good moments, but way too many errors. The biggest being the inclusion of Danny Care. What a useless sack of nothing. Not only does he telegraph his every pass, he takes 5 minutes to make a decision, as well as closing out space as he runs sideways, but he could actually be seen running sideways AND BACKWARDS during the game. Dickson (from saints) and Simpson (from wasps) are leagues ahead of the moron.
I'd also point out the try, when Ashton got stepped, Care drifted way past and left the hole undefended. What a chopper.
Also Nick Easter, his useless quins team mate, has now fumbled 4 balls forward in try scoring potential phases in 3 games. Shocking. And, to add insult to injury, he held up the ball at the back of the scrum for youngs and gave rubbish delivery.
As for the comments about the ref, I thought he was ok, he missed stuff, but no ref catches everything and the calls he made were pretty good.
Exciting times for international rugby!
NiWiTa November 29, 2010 1:22 pm

Anyhow thankfully Boks backline was wasteful which made things closer....disappointed by England attempting to play the Boks at their own big forwards games! Still at least PDV still has a job he he he

Problem was of course, Foden didn't break off and took Spies into touch along with himself.

Failed to make a single yard in all his carries.
Pitiful performance by a loose forward.

England should have known that the Boks would play the way they did but they still had no answer.
Well played Boks. 30-11 would have been a fairer reflection of how the game went.

I don't think it's wise to have a team full of youngsters, many of whom were playing there first game against SA. The team need some experience.
Anonymous November 30, 2010 1:13 pm

I think in the long run you'd have done better off losing and having grounds for getting a new coach. Frankly I'm happy for you to be run by a circus, it means you won't be in the mix come New Zealand.
