Robbie Coleman's great finish against the Chiefs
Coleman, the 20 year old Australian Sevens star, cut through the defence then stepped veteran All Black fullback Mils Muliaina with ease as he finished off a great try that started with a turnover from a huge Julian Salvi tackle earlier.
In fact there were a few big tackles before the try came about, including one from Fritz Lee that rocked Pat McCabe as he got ball and all. He did well to retain possession though, which led to Coleman sniping through a few forwards then stepping the last man.
It was his debut start for the Brumbies and despite weighing just 83kgs and opposing Tana Umaga, Coleman managed to make an explosive impact. Coach Andy Friend wasn't too surprised, says hes always been impressed by the young flyer.
"Robbie's got real speed," Friend said. "He's got similar footwork and vision to Matt Giteau. That combination worked well. They pose a real threat.
"Every time Robbie has been asked to step up to another level, whether it's the Australian under-20s or the sevens, he has done it, which is the sign of a quality footballer."
Coleman looks to be yet another talented young Australian back that will no doubt terrorise defences for many years to come. He'll be one to keep an eye on this season.

It's not in remembrance of Ned Kelly is it?
Hope the game looks after the youngsters that come through.

You didn't watch the opening Super rugby round then?
It was a festival of empty stadiums, knock ons and other unforced errors. The Top 14 on its own craps all over "Super" rugby, and doesn't need to spread itself over 3 countries and 3 time zones.
Leeners93 February 22, 2011 11:56 am

great try, looks to be another promising australian back;they really do have enough at this point,it's not fair to the other countries!

Their was one game (Hurricanes vs Highlanders) which had low numbers (by SupeRugby standards), the 11,000 who showed up would still fill most of the parks European club rugby is played in. And round 1 in any sport or league will see more mistakes then usual. As for the 3 countries & timezone remark what point are you trying to make? Seems like the right call to have the 3 best rugby nations provincial teams competing against each other.
Guy February 22, 2011 3:24 pm

The guy might be a talent in 7's but let's not overdo it with the superlatives just yet. Let's have another look at the end of the season, hope he keeps his form and we can call him a superstar than.

Also, the people talking about the Earthquake, shut up. It is shit luck and my condolences go out to everyone involved. They don't need trolls taking the piss out of them.
Anonymous February 22, 2011 4:17 pm

Im wondering if any stadiums have been affected by the quake, or whether they will have everything sorted in time.
I know its a while off and im sure the RWC is the least of their worries right now. (Totally understandable)
But it makes you wonder whether rugby life will go on and a 'new country' would be found or whether it would be postponed or cancelled etc...
(I know the RWC is a while off, but for a point of interest, does anyone know if a natural disaster or something would cause it to be cancelled/moved/postponed?)
Anonymous February 22, 2011 5:09 pm

AMI Stadium is likely to have suffered some damage following the quake.
The IRB feels it would be inappropriate to comment at this stage on the status of Rugby World Cup 2011 infrastructure or operations.

Awesome stuff... and well said, if you get round Mils, you deserve the points haha... The Oz backs industry making their jobs very well, it seems that every time SA produce a giant of a back rower, OZ produce one super lightning back

And a thought for the people in Christchurch and NZ.

Just a question for discussion: why are NH players so bad at one-on-one tackling in loose play?
Jono February 22, 2011 11:11 pm

The average crowd was 20,000 average roughly last season..
The next best comp is the Heineken Cup, which sits at around 15,000.
The GP is around 14,000 or so, and the T14 is about 14,000 too.
This season, based on round 1 of the S15 the average attendance is 26,774.
That's a total of 187,420 for 7 games played.
That's higher than anything else rugby can offer.
These were the attendences :
11,091 - Wellington
25,524 - Melbourne
32,700 - Auckland
13,227 - Canberra
23,807 - Durban
55,011 - Johannesburg
26,060 - Brisbane
Next round should see more big crowds. The Wartahs are expecting 50,000 in Sydney for the Reds game, Cape Town should get 30,000 at least and Blomfontein might get 30,000 too.
The other games should attract 15,000 to 20,000 for the most part.
In Comparison here are the T14 attendences last round :
13,323 - Montpellier
13,903 - Agen
16,912 - Bayonne
8328 - Castres
7812 - Racing Mtro
8000 - Bourgoin
16075 - Clermont
Not one crowd over 20,000 and several below 10,000.
Anonymous February 22, 2011 11:36 pm

Each Super 14 team only played 13 games last season (with lower ticket prices).
Top 14 teams played 26 league matches with HEC games on top (max 34 games).
English Premiership teams played 22 league matches plus LV= cup games plus HEC games (max 30 games).
That equates to almost triple the number of matches of the "Super" franchises that fans have to shell out for.
Leicester Tigers averaged 22,000 fans over 30+ games in a country where football dominates and ticket prices are more than twice the price as Super Rugby fixtures.
Good try though.

Jono February 22, 2011 11:53 pm

Just as there are more teams, more players, more money, more cities, more stadiums and more people.
Totally valid point.
But that's not the criticism people make.
They say the stadiums are empty and that attendences are low, which is demonstratable false.
They are the highest attendences in the world for a rugby competition not involving national teams.
Jono February 22, 2011 11:59 pm

Do yourself a favour and look up AFL attendences if we're now comparing different sports to rugby. The AFL (Autralian football league) has higher average attendences than the Premier League. It's the fourth highest average attandance of any sporting league int he world. Total attendance is higher in English football though (once again, more people, more teams, more fixtures in england).
And did you just comapre the British economy to the Australian economy??
The Australian economy is the only western economy not to go into recession in the last two years.
It has lower unemployment, a higher per capita income and it's deficit it's a tiny fraction of the British economy.
But why do you even feel compelled to make these arguments.
Jono February 23, 2011 12:03 am

So it's about two thirds as many.

I wish our Sydney houses were that cheap lol. These days it's hard finding anything decent for less than $700,000 unfortunately :(
Apparently Sydney is 2nd last in the world in housing affordability!
SAM^2 February 23, 2011 1:41 am

But some sort of super final between the club champions of both hemispheres really would be a great spectacle.
Any chance of this ever happening?
Only one extra game.
Jono February 23, 2011 2:09 am

Whenever you played the game (given that you couldn't play it during the season for either hemisphere) it would be in one teams off-season.
It wouldn't really be viable for that reason, one team would be out of season, unfit, with half their squad unsigned.
Philip February 23, 2011 2:14 am

I'm sure that given a bit of effort, it'd make a great match :)

Only I'm pretty sure if I'm an awesome player and I can make double or even a few grand more a year to secure a decent future after I've been broken time and time again...I'd do it....
Jono February 23, 2011 3:45 am

A big thing is that it's alot easier to go and play in the NH for a top player. Get paid just as much if not more, not have to play tough, grueling international rugby and get to live in Europe for a couple years, particularly if you are living in a beautiful place like Southern France.
So of course players do it.
But I'm pretty sure that's not the point he was making.
The point was the best players are almost all from the SH.
Jono February 23, 2011 4:08 am

Back to the video!
Robbie Coleman is a great find for the Brumbies, considering Gitaeu's leaving at the end of the year.
Heir apparent?
The Frenchman February 23, 2011 6:17 am

Correct. And they are cheap...
Talking about salary cap in Top 14 ? It's 8 million euros per team ! You can buy some Giteau every month with that !
Salary cap... let me laugh !
But this will not last long.

Anyway awesome finish there. Don't hear about this guy much.

Try to ignore the one or two people who cause trouble (and I'm pretty sure it's just one or two people who just repeatedly come on here and leave dumb comments).
Sam February 25, 2011 2:53 am

But those that come on here to get a rise out of silly comments. Very sad indeed!
