The Rugby Club Plays of the Week - Lets get excited
This week we won't be doing a RD Pick of the Week as there were some off-field, personal goings on that needed to be attended to. So while Round 1's compilation of tries went quite well, I hope that we've at least made up for week 2 by bringing you highlights from every game .
Throw in the Plays of the Week from the Australian Rugby Club, and we've had a decent helping of clips from Super Rugby, on a weekend where the Rebels beat the Brumbies, the Crusaders and Hurricanes shared their points, and the champion Bulls got out of jail with a late kick.
There were a few decent hits too, which are included here, and of course there's a clich check, this week hosted by young Jaco Taute of the Lions, who nailed it.
On another note, big congrats to regular voice over expert Sean Maloney on the birth of his little girl. He told me earlier that all went well, and he's looking forward to finally having some company for the early morning Super Rugby games from South Africa, which can be at 4am for those in Australia! I'm sure he'll be back for the Plays again next week. For now, enjoy.

But when a saffer team plays a kiwi team or whatever there will be virtually none.

Still, The Rugby Club's Plays of the Month just cheer my week. Almost every time brings me to shame for laughing so loud when at my university's computer rooms.
Cheers, RD

Europe is geographically tiny, so it is easy for away fans.
The rest of the world is different.
That's not crazy, it's just not the same.
Wolfman March 04, 2011 4:57 am

With regards to away fans, expat South Africans in New Zealand and Australia and expat Kiwis in Australia count as away fans. This weekend, for example, I am a Force supporter against the Sharks in Perth, but in a couple of weeks time I will be a Bulls support against the Force in Perth.
Crowds tend to be big enough without genuie away supporters travelling to the game, and with the size of Australia, NZ and South Africa (without even considering the distances between the countries) there doesn't tend to be that much away support even in local derbys.
Very different to Europe where having lived in London, I was able to attend Saracens games in Leicester, Northampton, Manchester and obviously London without much trouble. A Heineken Cup game somewhere in France was a wonderful way to spend a weekend.
Xavier - the video was on the rugbly league show, the Footy Show, and they weren't very impressed! Although I reckon it was one of the funniest things I have seen in a while! It is available on Youtube.

That was my point Einstein, it would be akin to football including the USA and Japan in the Champions League (ie, stupid).
That said, you still get thousands of away fans following English, Italian and Spanish teams when they play THOUSANDS of miles away in Russia. Dedication and professionalism I guess.

And I can live with the Taute cliches as long as he continues to score.

I think his deal is now commentating live on games - seems you need to play his live commentary on ustream at the same time the game is on, (or just treat it as a radio commentary).

He did have some classics, like "Giteau the little convict, eyes up the kick the way he might eye up your wallet".
Mind you, Kearnsy's one here was pretty good - he's going to have an imprint of an Afro on his stomach!

The distance between London and Moscow is the same distance between Adelaide and Perth.
Australia alone is bigger than Europe.
Going from South Africa to Australia is half the distance of the world's globe.
Jon March 06, 2011 3:19 am

Again, the world isn't like Europe.
The Asian Champions League in football doesn't have many away fans either, because the distances are so huge.
The Copa American also often doesn't have many away fans, greater distance makes it difficult.
Europe is the smallest continent in the world. It is much easier to travel around.

You're so right, rugby fans just aren't dedicated (!?) and aren't professional enough either (!?)
An "anonymous guess" pretty much sums up its worth as a comment. You have no idea what you're talking about.
