Ulster snatch victory from the Dragons with classic finish at Ravenhill

Ulster snatch victory from the Dragons with classic finish at Ravenhill

Ulster completed a dramatic 25-23 Magners League win over Newport Gwent Dragons on Friday night. The final few minutes included a drop goal apiece, with the decisive, match winning kick slotted by Ruan Pienaar.

Ulster moved to fourth on the Magners League table with the thrilling win courtesy of a dramatic finale as they snatched the win away from the Dragons, who themselves thought theyd pulled off the miracle late in the game.

Darren Cave scored for Ulster with just four minutes left, before Jason Tovey of the Dragons looked to have won the game for the visitors with his 79th minute drop goal. Springbok Pienaar then delivered the goods for the home side, after a perfect platform had been laid by his hard working forwards.

Pienaar, who won the game for Ulster with a long range penalty a few weeks back against the Scarlets, was modest when asked about his contribution. He gave credit to the forwards and said he was blessed to be able to play with such good players around him.

"I don't get many opportunities to drop goals and it wasn't the prettiest but at least it went over and we got the points. I just looked up and thankfully it went through the posts - it's a great result for us," Pienaar said.

"Paul Marshall reminded me that we could go for a drop goal so I have to give the credit to him and we showed a lot of character at the end."

This video shows the tries earlier in the match, as well as the last few minutes from what was an incredible, frantic finish to a rugby match. Theres also a short interview with Man of the Match Pienaar from directly after the game.

Anyone else think that Brew looked like a colossal wanker when he did his little dance?

Still, great game, great finish. Shouldn't be long before Spence is wearing the green jersey as BOD's successor.

Ruan Pienaar once again rescued Ulster. It's great to see that he seems to be enjoying himself.

For the Saffa's watching perhaps Pedrie's impact should also be lauded. Johann Muller also was immense.

Watching the end of that match I nearly had a heart attack! Big push for the end of the season now.

@wow-jiffy-lube

I couldn't agree more. A super colosal wanker indeed.

Nicee game but a lot of dubious tackles, and a couple of penalties that should have ben whistled.

Is Spence really that good? I've been impressed any time I've seen him, but is he in the same league as Bowe? (It's probably unfair to compare young players to O'Driscoll)

That was class! Pienaar seems to be such a good signing.

Does anyone else think that the commentator is deadly? He should be doing the Six Nations for the BBC instead of Eddie Butler and that Scottish guy. They're both crap. Anyone know this commentator's name?

@wow Jiffy lube thanks for writing a decent comment to start the thread off and yes, Brew looked like a tit and I really hope that crap stays out of Rugby as long as possible.

Hate to be a typical critic, I do love to see lots of tries, but wasn't that the worst defence by both sides?

Exciting finish though, weel done Ulster!

So everyone has a go at ashton for diving over the line, I really hope that everyone picks Brew up on this. He looks like a complete and total wanker.

I think it's sad Pienaar has to be reminded by someone else that a drop goal attempt is a possibility when you're losing by 1 point with 30 seconds left...

UpUlster,

I think it's Jim Neilly:

Going by that Dragons match alone, if he isn't mispronouncing names, he's seeing the wrong jersey altogether and even making up fixtures - quarter finals?!

On the plus side, he's as impartial as they come, and has a nice tone of voice. Unfortunately, more than a touch unreliable on the details of the game and sport.

Or American...

Wow-jiffy-lube right on the money. The only reason I clicked into the comments was to make an almost identical comment. Colossal wanker, indeed. Even pushed his teammates away so he could concentrate on his silly little jig. What a prize twunt.

Twunt is now my favourite word, and one that I think from now on should be applied exclusively to Brew. Thank you so much for bringing it into my life.

Jono March 23, 2011 1:44 am

In that sped up sequence of Dragon attacks, the ball was almost always passed one out to a single runner. Is that normal play in the Magners League?
Seems very predictable and easy to defend?

@jono, they were trying to set up the drop goal. If you have seen any Leinster highlights over the last year, you will know that that is not all the Magner's League is about.

Jono March 23, 2011 2:51 am

Fair enough.
I understand Leinster do play a more expansive game.

Its fun.....Smile;)

Ruan Pienaar - Phenomenal talent, big loss to SA. He'd get into any HC team.

Well, you seem to be in the minority there, Thomas. I think the rest of us will continue to appreciate a bit of modesty or humility from rugby players; it is, after all, a game played by men who should know what the world "respect" means.

Gavin March 23, 2011 10:37 am

Ruen Pienaar didn't do much in the first half of the season to be honest, he was looking like a big waste of money, but he has put a couple of decent games together now. Just in time for the HC quarters - hopefully Ulster can get through to the semis but they've a big task to do it against Northampton (I think).

@fry whats being the minority got to do with it being right or wrong?

So if you celebrate a try you are a complete wanker?....Bullshit! The ABs and many other nations do it all the time....are they wankers? I doubt it!

There is nothing disrespectful about celebrating a try, he doesn't do it for the sole purpose of disrespecting the other team....hes simply excited and very happy.

PS. Hows his rugby? Thats what I thought.

Smile guys :)
