Multiple players suspended following Perpignan and Bayonne mass brawl
Remy Martin, Gregory Le Corvec, David Marty, and Aretz Iguiniz will all be relegated to the stands for the next month, following a decision from the LNR earlier tonight to suspend all give of them after they each were found to have thrown multiple punches.
It was a typically fierce tempered encounter between the two sides, as visitors Bayonne took to the pitch amidst a chorus of booing, perhaps setting the tone for what would be an occasion marred by violence.
Perpignan won the match 25-19, but yellow cards were dished out at regular intervals, with the worst of the fights taking place after the final whistle, with Le Corvec walking up to Martin and having a full go.
He will be out until April 22nd, while Martys case will be reclassified on April 12th. Bayonne flanker Jean-Jo Marmouyet also appears to have been suspended, with the same punishment as Marty. Aretz Iguiniz has been suspended for twenty days.
Perpignan meanwhile have been fined 7 000 euros, while Bayonne were handed a 12 000 euros fine, with the 5000 extra based on them being repeat offenders.

From an early age we are taught to direct our aggression through the tackles/rucks/mauls and not waste our time with off the ball scuffles. They try to act all manly but a man doesn't let his team-mates and family down by getting sent-off, band and probably getting a pay-cut for the fine.

Blonde dude is fairly tough, took about 4 or 5 hard punches square in the face and stayed on his feet.

Le Corvec, Privat, Cudmore, Martin, Suta, etc...
pity that players like Le Corvec are more famous for their agressive actions than for their skills
as for Martin, his behaviour on the pitch may have cost him few international games

"typical french"
when someone begin his comment by "typical", generally it's always silly and ignorant

But fighting after the whistle, imo there's a monster difference and I don't tolerate it one bit. What happens in the previous 80 minutes should stay there.
Sucker punching someone after the game has ended, even if they're sledging, isn't on.
And to be perfectly honest you could get the cleanest club in world rugby, if one of their players was attacked like that after the whistle, they'd react.
I would happily see the player who threw that punch banned for atleast a year.
However, the occasional square-dance in the game itself, as I say I enjoy it.

Never expected that 'after the whistle sucker punch' that was very very out of order..
I have seen the match with the french hookers bashing each other in the sin bin...but they had heated words as they went off the pitch, but to walk up to someone after the whistle and hit them when their back is turned is very low...
Im suprised he hasnt been banned for a much longer time... I think the fact its after the game and on someone who is clearly not in an aggressive stance makes it completely wrong.
Im much like a couple comments above, I do like seeing a bit of a biff match but after the game :/ nope!

Also, Le Corvec just showed himself to be a piece of shit.

I LOVE a good dust up in rugby, shows you are right on the edge (which some of us need to be) but the only thing lower than coming off the bench to fight is doing it after the whistle.
That bloke should get months not days as a suspension.

Look at the last punch he threw at Cudmore his first reaction is to take a step away..
It's been going on for years and yet he got away with a lot of things.
This is the kind of guy that should be banned from Rugby...
Then again on the other side we had Martin who has somewhat the same profile... except that he's learned a bit through the years

Aymeric March 24, 2011 10:22 am

It's been embraced by a popular class whereas it has mainly been played by bourgeois or aristocrats in the UK.
It's been often considered as a mean to express violence on a field rather than a sport of its own. In addition, the rivalry between the towns of southern France is stronger than anywhere else.
I think it should have disappeared or at list soften in the professional era but it sometimes resurfaces... it's kinda part of the rugby culture in southern France though...

Welcome to Perpignan, worst audience ever, beside Toulon.
They spend half the time supporting their team passionately (which is good), and and the other half boo-ing the opponent (can't stand that anymore...).

It's maybe 10 years that he gives cheap shots and coward punchs.
I mean every team have a "dirty" player: Munster have Quinlan, Toulouse have Lamboley, Safa's have brussow, England have Hartley...etc
But what prove Le Corvec at international level, nothin! He prefers to gain his popularity by the number of punchs than caps
Anonymous March 24, 2011 12:33 pm

red March 24, 2011 12:52 pm

But I would not say is that he's a coward. He never really goes up and punches anyone in the back of the head like Corvec did here. He's also not typically overly-aggressive (ie - not especially looking for fights).
Russell March 24, 2011 1:23 pm

shows how much of a pussy he is that he can't knock someone out even with a sucker punch!

Right in front of the touch judge. what a joke.
I dont mind Le Corvec fighting face to face in the game, but to punch some one from behind after the final whistle is outragoues. At least let Martin have a chance to hit you back. Coward...

How funny is that guy with the lollipop in his mouth at the end.
"That guy with the lollipop" is Thomas Livremont, one of the coaches of Bayonne and also French coach Marc Livremont's younger brother. What is funny is that the Livremont family is from... Perpignan.
Nathan March 24, 2011 11:31 pm

I guess this is part of southern France rugby culture, but man, this is a pro match !
Frenchy March 24, 2011 11:33 pm

I'm coming from the South West of France and i agree with Aymeric. Over there things can be very tensed, there's a lot of history between clubs, and some of them are know to be quiet "nasty"; i mean players, coaches, supporters. This is the derby mentality basically.
The best example is Toulon which has always been rough. There's a famous game (Toulon vs. Begles-Bordeaux) in 1991 where aggression between the 2 teams start in the tunnel, before the game has even started and go on for the entire 80 min.
During the minute of silence guys in the stands shout "Fuckers", "Go fuck yourself" Ridiculous!
Check this one: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1hlx_toulon-begles-1991-1ere-mi-temps_sport
Fight happens in rugby but here i'd blame the 3 ref for letting the fight escalate to 30 guys almost.
I disagree when some say it's typical. It was typical but not anymore.
Anonymous March 24, 2011 11:47 pm

I mean, if i dont like seeing two guys kissing does that make me gay? would you tap a guy on the ass in a pub? I know i wouldnt, im not bothered if someone gets a slap on the ass, i just dont see why its necessary to go for the ass.. why not a pat on the back?!? why physically aim to touch another mans bum??!

Hey... bonehead, where's your farm located?
I love that Southern linguistic folklore ;-)
I assumed he is from The village full of sailormen......:-) and eventually the one which greated with so much hospitality dear old Moscato (in your video).....
Flipje March 26, 2011 3:36 pm

I thought the one shouting those gentled words to Moscato was....Califano, one of the most successfull prop in french rugby history, has a youth player or ball carrier?????
Can someone confirm/deny this please????
Anyhow Frenchie/Aymeric you guys are spot on with your comments.
LA guerre des clochets, the war bells, is typical from the south west of France, highligthed by the old rivalry Beziers/Begles/Narbonne et Toulon (80/90's) but where their roots are/(were?) found far more deeper...in the small lost village from the south west....still wondering if this still true nowadays....
But still this does not excuse the poor image given by both team and especially Le Corvet / Martin....
Frenchy March 26, 2011 11:45 pm

i believe Califano was born in the region of Toulon but i have no clue if he was the one shouting during the game. I don't think he did, the voices we hear are the ones of grown ups, no?
Yeah, in this 1991 game there's not much rugby...
