Super Rugby Pick of the Week - Round 7
The Heineken Cup resumes this weekend, as does the Amlin Challenge Cup, with quarter final action taking place around Europe. On top of that there's a few Aviva Premiership games, and then of course Super Rugby down south.
Last week there wasn't time for a Pick of the Week, and this week was almost the same but here it is, a selection of the best tries scored in round 7. In fact round 6's tries didn't come close to this week's, so it's worked out nicely.
Starting with Jason Rutledge's first try from a brilliant Jimmy Cowan kick, this round has loads of good tries for you to enjoy. Joe Rokocoko's against the Cheetah's was fantastic, as was the one Sarel Pretorious finished off in the same match.
There's actually loads of enjoyable tries, so hopefully you find the selection entertaining.

If he continues to look good against some of the best in the world... Shouldn't he be looked at for the RWC?

"omg there's an opportunity!"
but yeah, pin point accuracy, even if it's without any pressure.

In any event, you can be pretty sure that this week every coach will have been reminding their players to cover the width of the field when preparing for the opposition to shoot for goal. It's a once per season event, at best.
Juggernauter, I've been a Kade Poke fan for a while - he was always dangerous when I saw him play for Tasman and the Crusaders. It's good that he has been able to stay in the South Island and find some running space with the Highlanders. Keeps the pressure on the wingers ahead of him in All Black frame.

To those that are curious, the match had to played in Timaru. Google it, you'd be lucky to find it on a map.

Regarding the AB's, maybe it's time for Graham Henry to give Colin Slade a shot as back up 10? We're 5 months out of the RWC and nor McAlister, Brett or Cruden have settled and Salde is a pretty exciting player.
Any thoughts?

I've never seen much of McAlister at 10, although he sure has cred wider out. Other recent 10s are falling by the wayside somewhat. Its time for Slade or McAlister to step up.

I guess this competition encourages a more dynamic form of rugby, focused on attack, a sort of 14-man rugby.
This would explain why 5 of the 6 world cups have been won by the South, they're better at scoring tries! But it doesn't really explain why England and France were finalists in 5 of the 6 world cups.

And in regards to your defence point, as has been explained many times, these players have no trouble defending against European teams at national level.
The attck in SH rugby is more intelligent, so it's harder to defend.

Most English/British and French schoolkids ditch rugby for football (soccer).
There are large parts of England where rugby is not even played in schools (most of the north and midlands).

LOL no we dont. sorry.
Jono April 12, 2011 1:52 am

Compare it, for example, to Australia (86,952), and you see how remarkable it is that Australia has a better winning record, overall and in World Cups, than England.
NZ (137,835) is also dwarfed in terms of playing numbers.
France (273,084) is much less than England but still has a quarter of a million, far more than Nz and Aus.
Even Ireland (153,080) has more than NZ and Aus.
South Africa is the only country that even approaches England (632,184).
Suprisingly Sri Lanka has 103,325 players, and a little less surprisingly Japan has 122,598.

fact: The earth moves around the sun.
silly person: LOL no it doesn't. sorry.
fact: more people live in England than live in Scotland.
silly person: LOL can't be true, there are parts of England that don't even have people.
What a laugh!
