Delon Armitage's sneaky punch on Stephen Myler

Delon Armitage appears to have let himself down again with another misdemeanour that will more than likely result in him spending more time out of the game. It took place during Northampton Saints' 26-20 win over London Irish.
Armitage missed England's Six Nations following an altercation with a doping officer that led to a eight week suspension. Against Northampton Saints this past weekend, the former England fullback looked to have swung a fist at flyhalf Stephen Myler, catching him in the face.
It was late in the game and it's hard to know what prompted it, other than possible frustration, but it wasn't picked up by the ref or touchjudge, and even the commentators missed it. The tv cameras didn't though, as it was clear to see for those watching at home.
If he is cited and suspended, the chances are that it could range from the low-end offence punishment of two weeks, right up to eight weeks for a top-end offence. His disciplinary record won't do him any favours though, so you'd think even a low-end offence might be hiked up.
At this stage it's unclear if he will actually even be cited or not, but many of you pointed this out as something you'd like highlighted and shown again, so here it is. What's your take on it?
Update 03/05/2011: Armitage has now been suspended for three weeks.

Pathetic.

Take out the play maker and a team falls apart. Just part of the game!
Von April 25, 2011 11:07 am

Armitage, what a little scumbag. But did anyone else see the Northampton player elbow the LI player in the face (I don't know the player names, just it was a Northampton forward.).

As was mentioned earlier, take out the playmaker and you're laughing. And Foden is the man with the shirt but Brown and Abendanon are not test match quality and this has been proven time and time again.

Despite of that, i don't think armitage is in the little papers of Johnno. as said before, Abendanon, Ojo or Strettle seem to be first choices.
Let see the sanction of our dear "god save the RFU" before quick conclusions

This doesn't really aid his reputation, which is getting marred alot.
However, some England fans need to start watching rugby and stop judging people based on highlights reels or opinions they read in the media.
Nick Abendanon is a glorious attacking fullback, but his defence is and always has been suspect. Mike Brown is a fine premiership fullback, but lacks some cutting edge in attack. Delon has both good defensive and good attacking qualities, and a far better kicking game than both of the above. So he may well be a twat, but he is a better all-round rugby player.
And it's interesting that the same people who talk about Brown and Abendanon never mention Alex Goode, presumably because Saracens rarely get any mention from Sky Sports unless its something to do with South Africans or Brendan Venter.

Anyone who hasn't been punched to a bloody pulp on a field hasn't played well enough, particularly half backs. When I plied my trade at 10 instead of 9 for a few seasons I wore punches and very late tackles and a badge of honour. Didn't retaliate just kept on, like Myler did.
It's a rough game "If you can't take a punch, get off the pitch."
I may sound laissez-faire, but Armitage is about 4th in line to the national 15 shirt, Myler about 5th to the 10, it's the end of the season so who gives a fuck?
Mark April 25, 2011 11:40 am

On the video I agree this was stupid by Delon, but lets be honest most of the forwards on each team will have done something similar during the game, Delon just got picked up by the cameras!
Lil-Chris April 25, 2011 11:50 am

Stamping: only hurts people, fingers excluded this is always wrong
Gouging: deplorable. All incidents should be incestigated by citation officer.
Punching: if ref(s) sees the incident: red card for first, yellow for retaliation for the two involved. If missed by the ref it is let go, repeat offenders then just get extra vigilance from refs.
Didn't want to sound like I applaud violance, just natire of the game.

its just part of the game.

Myler came off alright here on this occasion. But it could have been much worse (broken jaw, orbital, concussion, etc...). And for what? People have to remember this is a game and not war or even a street fight.
Hope he gets a good long suspension. Armitage has said he was an angry bully as a kid, shocker. Luckily his brother preserves the family pride with his stellar play.
ProfofDarkArts April 25, 2011 2:03 pm

Steve, do what every rugby player has done since it began: have your forwards sort him out.

What???
yes amitage has let himself down recently with the doping officer incident, and now this, but can you mention the other 'various other infractions' he has been involved in?
and to play the ethnicity card? you've had a shocker
I'm not even a fan of armitage,I think he does offer good attacking and kicking game but his man on man defence is woefull.
Barry Garlow April 25, 2011 3:12 pm

could be that he was reaching around trying to get hold of Mylers man meat?
Maybe Delon was trying to punch him into submission, ready for the deep penetration he so clearly wants?
just a thought.
themull April 25, 2011 3:12 pm

Unless there was something done earier in the game which warranted "payback" as it were...
I've nor problem with guys throwing down so long as both guys no whats happening and it's not just a cheap shot like this one
Von April 25, 2011 4:00 pm

When I start saying I'd be able to fight and make a player run away from me, then you can call me a hypocrite.
For all the people saying this is part of the game, no it isn't. Big hits, hard rucking and try saving tackles are part of the game. A head to head fight is even part of the game, but punching a defenseless player, unprovoked, in the face on the ground is pathetic. It is how a coward acts. Not a rugby player.
Peter R April 25, 2011 4:10 pm

I mean yeh he popped him in the head but im not one for these 'red card for a punch' things...
I mean I look at the cudmore and o'connell fight a while back and part of me thinks, just give them both a yellow or cudmore a yellow and o'connell nothing...
Well maybe....
I just think that players get into scraps and if you look at all the punches thrown its rare if a decent one connects, or at least does anything if it does connect...
i think sending armitage off for the game for this would have been pathetic...it was a brain fart and sure give him a yellow considering the fact it was a cheap shot, but im tired of red cards for scraps...
Look at french rugby, V.Matfield stated he needed to improve his boxing skills when he went there.. i just think punching is not part of the game but to red card someone is just tiresome... leave that for spears and gouges...

Armitage acted cowardly, maybe 2 weeks would be coherent. But he is certainly Not in the starting blocks for the Next rwc.
Abendanon has a card to play

its everywhere mush..

Of course, it happens everywhere :) howlett, kelleher, bastareaud or powell have nice records.. but i was pointing a serie of accidents where some english backs were involved in the last 2 months.
Nick April 26, 2011 8:16 am

I think the reality is Armitage was just behind Foden 12 months ago, but with the lack of game time and lack of decent rugby he's played I think there are 4/5 players in the running for replacement 15.

Alex Goode is a talented 15 and potentially 10, there has to be a point when he gets his England shirt. Failing that Cueto at 15 and bring in some of these truly talented wingers we have and who can score tries....unlike Cueto.
