The Stormers edge the Blues in another dramatic game
It was a classic match-up as the men from Cape Town were determined to avoid a three game losing streak, but had to fight for it after being down 19-3 at halftime, and playing with fourteen men after Francois Louw was yellow carded.
The Stormers came out pumped up in the second half though, and thanks to some great play by new center pairing Juan De Jongh and Johann Sadie, got within touching distance of a famous win. A controversial late try from Schalk Burger got them equal, then an ice-cool conversion from replacement scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage gave them the win.
Errors and missed tackles were the downfall of the home side, although the stats actually show that the Stormers missed eight more than the Auckland region. Perhaps a telling stat is the linebreaks, with the Stormers making 13 to the 7 of the Blues.
Coach Pat Lam seemed to direct his attention towards the officials though, claiming that the Burger try shouldn't have been given. "Some calls out there made it very tough for us," he said.
"When the touch judge says it's short, and Alby (Mathewson) says it's short, but Keith Brown (referee) believes he saw it over the line. We're very frustrated."
On the plus side, Luke McAlister became the first New Zealand player to break the 100 point mark this season, taking his season tally to 109 points, something that All Black coach Graham Henry will surely take note of.
For the Stormers, the successful center pairing of De Jongh and Sadie are likely to be relegated to the bench for their next game against the Brumbies. If Jaque Fourie and Jean De Villiers are fit, they will be automatic selections, said forwards coach Matt Proudfoot from Sydney.

Kind of an odd game, I saw it on tv and it was intense to watch, but disappointing I'm sure as Blues fans, especially with so many players leaving this year.

If this is a bad game, then you are basically saying that the Springboks and All Blacks can't play rugby, since both these teams are shadow international sides.
Funny how these same players smash European players every time they play them.

Then you get these bitter NH kids coming on and slagging off Super Rugby, the competition that produces the best players in the world.
Grow up.

Having said that, it goes without saying that there are also a lot of intelligent SH posters on RD as well as the arse-clowns who think that moaning about something they don't understand is interesting to others..

Shit stirrers are shit stirrers.
But the HC was a very good game, and Leinster play a very good style of rugby the majority of the time. They have a great mentality, trying to use skills and ambition to win games, instead of grunt and negative tactics.
But anyway, this video is about Stormers vs Blues (Western province vs Auckland).
And it was a good high quality game, with All Blacks and Springboks throughout both teams.

Not a terrible attendence for a league fixture.

The crowd looks bad because it is a massive stadium, and for some reason in New Zealand and South Africa, they don't fill it up from the front, closing off the top tier, or seats furthest away from the pitch, as they do in Australia. You end up with people sitting in row ZZZ when there are other seats available.
As noted, 22,000 isn't bad.

Obviously cos it's the highlights we don't see how many open phases there had been before and how tired the players might have been, but that kind of tackling is unacceptable.

As a neutral spectator from a country with no rugby heritage whatsoever, to me the NH rugby seems more structured with more solid defense.
The SH type looks a bit more chaotic (at least in the highlights) but therefore a bit more unexpected and exciting.
I enjoy both kinds. They are just different styles.
Anyway, no matter how much bitchin' is going on between NH/SH, League/Union, 7's/15's: it's undeniable that whe are all united in the greatest God-given sport in the universe.
So let's just cut the crap and sing Christmas songs together,
muh-kay??!

Look at the line ups of these two teams. They are half the NZ team and half the SA team.
You know, the teams that have no trouble defending against the best Europe has to offer.
The attack in the SH is much more complicated and intelligent, which is why these guys also have no trouble scoring more points than European opposition.

Whatever internet guy.

But when I play, even at my level, and I miss a simple tackle, I know I've let my team down. If several players miss tackles and they score, then your team looks and feels like shit.
I don't care whether you've won 100 world cups or if you play once a week for a scratch team and never train. The above scenario is true of every single rugby player. So yes, missing tackles at any level of the game is unacceptable.
Laz May 27, 2011 1:22 pm

Also, some of you judge clips of missed tackles that lead up to tries, and ignorantly believe that that goes on all match?! Has it never crossed your mind that the scores would be like, 100-90 if that were the case?
Anonymous May 27, 2011 2:50 pm

quoting myself from a few posts back: "Obviously cos it's the highlights we don't see how many open phases there had been before and how tired the players might have been"
see, I like to cover my back when I know the sort of people who disagree with me won't have thought about their arguments very much at all.
