Three refs taste the dirt in one weekend of rugby

Three refs taste the dirt in one weekend of rugby

While the Super Rugby Picks of the Week for the last two rounds is still being prepared, it's a good time to get this amusing clip up that shows a quite rare occurrence from last weekend.

Over the years whenever a ref has been knocked over it's usually been posted here on Rugbydump. Why feature it, you ask? Simple really - because it's funny.

Obviously nobody wants to see a referee injured, and when it's a serious knock, the due respect is shown, naturally. Players should also be doing everything they can to avoid making contact with the ref, but when it's just a case of him losing his feet or getting an accidental shove from behind, it brings a smile to most faces.

I'm not sure why that is, but every time a ref gets physical, there's a reaction from the crowd, the commentators, and the fans watching at home on TV.

It can't really be explained, as it's just a guy getting knocked over. More often that not though, that man is the focus of all the negative energy and tension that's boiling up in the players, coaches, and yes, you. We've all done it. If our team is playing badly and they don't get the bounce of the ball, who is the best person to blame? You guessed it.

So I suppose that is why when they take a knock, the majority of people will find it mildy titillating. Yes, titillating. That's the kind of broad spectrum of vocabulary you get to experience if you make it to the sixth paragraph. Most site visitors have no idea.

Keith Brown, Stuart Dickinson (crowd favourite), and Ian Smith all managed to get themselves in a tangle this past weekend, being bowled over by various players, but managing to hop swiftly to their feet and pretend it never happened. Three in one weekend must be some kind of record. A fairly trivial and meaningless record, but a record nonetheless.

Well atleast the refs making more of an effort to tackle the opposition players than some of the defenders in the S15 this year ....

That last one just tripped over a player. This is why I like doing college womens games. They usually just bounce off me.

Saracens4Premiership, even players in your own league openly take the piss out of your team and how it gets success by being boring.
Translate that style of play to the international stage and watch how well it works.
What the hell would an Englishman know about good rugby?

People responding to Saracens4Prem, please don't. It's clear he's just pathetically trolling this site to get a rise out of people.

The suggestion would be to just leave it be and comment on something else.

This might be one of my favourite new mini series. Love how the crowd gives the ref a bit of shtick too lol

I love the first one with the stormers, he's so confused when Bekker gets the ball, hopes to hell the ball wont go his way, but it does, he misses the forward pass and gets romped...heeehehehehe

Great writing too RD. A+

Haha nice to see the refs getting the knock and moving on (fforball refs would kept on the floor for a while), this reminds me of the Six Nations game (England v I don't remember who) when the ref got out injured! It was just hilarious!

notice how all of the accidents happened after the 70 min mark. These refs need to shape up!

I saw all of these live, and couldn't quite believe they all happened in a single weekend. Talk about the stars aligning! Keith Brown was lucky not to end up at the bottom of the ruck, as that could have been nasty.

And re: Saracens4Prem it's Internet 101: please, don't feed the troll.

With so many site visitors (growing daily, fyi), there's bound to be a few trouble causers. It's the nature of the beast. Try ignore it and if anything is overly offensive, drop us an email and let RD deal with it. Getting in a flame war here is fairly pointless. Cheers

Seen a referee break their leg rather nastily after he got in the way of two opposing forwards.
They gotta be quick on their feet if them refs are gonna get up close to them rucks.

See even the refs are hard in rugby, those would have had a football player calling for a stretcher.

Worst one ive seen was in a rugby league game. ref copped a knee in the head from a 110kg forward in full flight. nasty stuff

In the first clip, might help if the ref wore a totally different colour jersey from the players.
Just sayin'

Side note;
Coffee and RD. A great start to the work day!

Stu Dickeison got pushed into the path of the Crusaders player by one of the Chiefs' players. I couldn't read his number, but it looked like a second rower just from his height. He was in a good position otherwise.

Most of those seemed to happen when the attacking team went back inside suddenly towards the ruck. Refs caught off guard, good on them for getting up and not stopping play.

Do you get an extra point for hitting the ref in the SH?????? ;-)

I like the 2nd hit, how the players brushed aside the ref.... I thought first a bit of an elbow charge...but not actually...just a gentle pushed from a 2nd row (???) it seems.

3rd ref shows good example on how to protect yourself in a ruck and most importantly how to quickly moved out....

Life is tough for some ref down South it seems...definetly the SH players fault, the pace of the game is too fast. They should move up North ;-)
