Springboks get morale boosting win over the All Blacks in Port Elizabeth

South Africa's Morne Steyn kicked South Africa to a 18-5 victory against New Zealand at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon, giving a passionate capacity crowd something to cheer about ahead of the RWC.
With much speculation about his future as first choice flyhalf, kicking ace Steyn showed his value in a tight contest as he slotted three long range penalties in the first half, and continued to punish the All Blacks for their forced indiscretions throughout the match.
While the visitors were without key men Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter, this was a good run out for some of the players who will be invaluable come world cup time, and a great test for flyhalf Colin Slade, who has heaps of pressure on him to perform as understudy to the king.
The intensity was something to behold, and while there were a few leaks in the Springbok defence, they scrambled well and managed to hold out the multi-talented All Black backs. Jaque Fourie in particular was superb, as was Heinrich Brussouw who, despite taking a nasty knock in the face early on, went on to earn the Man of the Match award.
The Springboks, who stuck to the same tactics that coach Peter De Villiers insists is what they're best at, managed to out-muscle the All Blacks, and take the points on offer. They'll get a great boost from it as it was their final Test before the RWC, while the All Blacks still need to travel to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane for the Tri Nations decider next weekend.
The highlights below show the points, in a match that only had one try. There were some impatient requests on here though, so this video will have to do for those who missed it live.

I think a key part of New Zealands world cup will be how they will respond in front of their home crowd. Will the pressure be too much or will they just raise the intensity of performance as a result? I can see Conrad Smith being key due to his great defensive and offensive decision making in the backline which NZ clearly missed in this match.
Overall this was a pretty intense match and although I am not a fan of the Boks brand of rugby I can see their style of being rugby being effective if lacking in imagination.
On a side note I hope the ridiculous soccer style complaining of the players stops come WC time. In this match and also the Ireland match in particular where Fitzgerland suggested to the ref a french player should be carded theres been far too much unsavoury behaviour!

We'll still win the tri-nations, whilst you will come dead last!
And we'll be taking that RWC trophy off your hands too!

And no, the Semifinal (that is of course if the ABS actually make it past the 1/4s this time, lol) will be very similar to what you see here. Add Schalk Burger and Francois Steyn into the mix and you have an All Black side being not only kicked out of their own World Cup, but humiliated.
Btw, nice scrum. That rubbish was your 1st choice front row.
Brussow is the best player in the world. About 10 turn overs and 100 tackles with a broken face.
Saviola August 21, 2011 10:26 pm

A solid, much needed win for south africa, but new zealand don't need to worry unduly when their second string managed to stretch the south african defence so frequently. They might be worried about what happens if McCaw gets injured since thompson didn't look good enough to compete against the best at openside, I'm surprised Matt Todd didn't make the squad as he did a superb job for the crusaders when McCaw was injured and NZ are short of cover at 7.
Meanwhile SA look impressive up front, particularly Brussow, but they just don't seem to have much cutting edge in the backline, not a single try by a back since their first autumn international. And seriously why is JP Pietersen playing ahead of the Aplon, he was incredible in the super 15 and probably the most exciting runner they have. De Villiers continued attempts to make as few alterations to the 2007 world cup final side as he possibly can are getting beyond ridiculous.

I personally pride myself of being a "rugby fan" rather than a South African fan, because I enjoy ANY good rugby rather than just South African rugby etc! and really the talk that has come about since 2003 (when England won) is getting tiresome and quite nasty... I know none of us know each other but I always liked to think that rugby players and fans from any nation could have a bit of banter and be "friends" but really, now... Its just got to the point where i wonder if some of the people here would beat the living daylights out of people who support a different team.
I honestly think you guys either need to get laid or we all need to have a bad day of rugby and have a minnow team come through and win!
At least that way everyones inflated ego bubbles would be popped!

The Bok don't stand a chance at this WC, not even with your 110kg, cake eating fullback Fran Steyn in the starting line-up.
Goodluck ladies, you won't have a local uneducated video official to assist you at the WC either!

Anonymous August 21, 2011 11:57 pm

But for NZ, it was essentially the second string, so they won't be too dissapointed. They scored the only try, and the ref favoured SA a bit, so there are a few positives.
It does show how important Dan Carter is for NZ. Without him they are certainly beatable. With him there, it becomes much harder.

On a side note cowans try clearly wasn't one so what are you complaining about? Actually don't answer that - I don't care.
Think about how you talk about others otherwise it'll come back and bite you in the ass one day. If it seems like I'm talking to you like a child it's because I'm pretty sure you are one. If you decide to try and make a comeback to this message, I won't bother replying. Bokke. Let's keep this site friendly
bloodfya August 22, 2011 1:25 am

The ref had a terrible game.. nearly all th line brakes came from foward passes... the try- sbw to gear? then cowan to dagg then back to cowan.. both those passes were foward.
Im sure the boks had a few calls go in their favour with regard to brussow in the rucks.
Regardless of the outcome the ref was terrible. I would still be worried as a saffa fan just because playing games every 4-5 days at the WC with all these old people could be pretty rough.. especially after a fiji and samoa and wales..
hope styen doesnt break a toe:}

G-ROM August 22, 2011 2:09 am

Boks in particular on that game were acting like football players, crying out a knock on here, a high tackle there...
when I was a kid, any player but the captain getting caught chatting the ref used to be penalized with a 10m whistle.
i hope refs get instructions so we make it clear during the WC that rugby will NEVER get close to football. WE respect the ref !
Especially on that game, i paid a lot of respect to the ref for having preferred the SPIRIT of the game by denying the try. What is more important if not justice and fairplay in that game we love ??
Anonymous August 22, 2011 2:28 am

Wallabies to win this weekend in a game played the way it was designed to be played.
DC = God August 22, 2011 4:40 am

saddens me to see a team come out and play rugby while the other shines the boot of their kicker and he wins the game. Terrible game to watch very boring when south africa got the ball. NZ came out to play rugby SA came out to play football.
on the side note about the try i am an AB's fan (clearly) and it shudnt have been a try, we're not crying too much about it. Only thing i was pissed off about that game was SA approach. DISGRACEFUL
DC = God August 22, 2011 4:41 am

Peter de Villiers August 22, 2011 5:39 am

SA was the beneficiary of some new combinations that didn't quite gel in their first game for NZ. Nothing too major about that.

You're an embarrassment, shut up and grow up, you make yourselves look like fools. It's just a game, why can't you just enjoy the positive aspects?
Do you think any of the ABs would be on a blog hurling shit? Wouldn't waste their time.
If you've done some traveling, you should realise that all countries have great people and clearly each has their share of childish idiots - don't be one of them.

RuggerFan August 22, 2011 8:02 am

Bismarck du Plessis is pure beast. Not sure why he got subbed after 60 mins but his running game is enormous IMO. Heinrich Brussouw also had a wonderful game at blindside and will be a real threat later on in the year. (Prefer him to Burger)
Dagg, I believe had a wonderful game, and I believe is in much better form than Muliaina atm. And to all those people whinging about Cowan's "try" being disallowed...get over it, it clearly was a forward pass, and I'd prefer to lose the game than hear people whine about it for the next 5 years.
And lastly...can't wait for the Bledisloe Cup Test! Gunna be a cracker.

I love rugby. I love the Springboks and I always hope they win. But if they don't, it's not the end of the world. ABs lost when they felt invincible and that is scary. They are human!!
Al lyou people out there making horrible remarks about different teams are NOT sport fans. You people are nasty elitists. You say you don't want your sport turning into football/soccer, just look at how you're behaving right now!
Remember one thing, when the final whistle blows, those 30 men still respect each other. Maybe some of you, and that includes Saffas, who bring in negative attitudes about rugby, need to learn from our heroes that bleed, sweat and live rugby!

AK-NZ August 22, 2011 11:33 am

In regard to the game, I thought it was frustrating to see the AB's attack so strongly, but fail at the last hurdle. A few nerves and a bit of a line-up change are probably to blame for those indiscretions. However, full credit to the Bok forwards, they really muscled up and denied us a lot of quick ruck ball which is so integral to the AB's game plan.
It's also clear for everyone to see it was a forward pass, and while the right decision was made in disallowing the try, the IRB needs to make sure the refs tighten up their officiating. I thought, in general, the reffing was a bit below standard with a number of AB forward passes missed, and a few questionable calls for both sides.
Overall, it wasn't an amazing spectacle of rugby, but that can't take away from a gritty and determined Bok win. Forward play the likes of which SA employed is what makes me respect them so much as a team. Dagg, my god what a talent.. Kahui had a good'un too, and what about Bismarck! The guy is a tank and really put the heat on our scrum. Hard luck AB's, hopefully you can find some retribution in the West Island this week.

I think the team that plays the better rugby is the team that wins at the end. When Scotland beat SA, they used all their strengths. What's wrong with thta? Nothing!! Whoever cries over losing a game needs to grow up and grow a pair. As I said in my previous post, win or lose, I just want to watch rugby. If ABs were so dominant and deserved toi win, they would have. I believe NZ will walk away World Champs because they are almost unstoppable. ALMOST!
Re-read my post if you missed the point of it.
I'm here for the rugby. Good games, bad games, wins, losses, kicking games and forwards rumbling up and down. I don't care. It's all good.

Boks had nothing to offer in attack except grunting and using their opponent faults. But they did well. That's how they won the 2007 trophy.
On defence, they were very good. Even if the AB's managed a number of line-breaks, they stayed composed.
In general, classic Jack White's game plan worked well with a team build to perform it. Simple, but efficient.
This game has shown that SA needs Steyn as their fly-half. He doesn't know how to run a backline, but boy, he can kick.
Brssow is outstanding. Having Brssow in your starting line-up sticks perfectly to SA game-plan. I think he has pushed Shalk on the bench (I don't see Burger as a 7, maybe at 8 instead of Spies, who has never done anything on the international level).
Bismark has to be the starting hooker, he's soooooo much superior to John Smit. What's the commander credibility when he's worst than all his soldiers ? I don't think Matfield is a natural leader. Maybe Shalk Burger ? Strauss or Rallepele would bring much more from the bench.
SA is not far from their WC starting 22 (except Butch I wanna fight James). Let's hope Lambie's injury is not that bad. I don't wish Franois I'm going in Paris looking for whores Steyn as Boks starting fullback (and nowhere near the 22), in SA own-interest...
About NZ... Well, it had to be expected.
Lack of killer instinct, too much mistakes, not enough patience. But with two or three more games, this team is capable of something. Apart from ill-discipline, the defence was good.
There were some really strange choices in the Starting line-up.
Thompson is a good player but he's only a blindside flanker able to cover 8. This year, he hasn't had a start at 6. I wish GH will give him a chance at 6 in Brisbane, only to rest Kaino.
The only way to have a cover at 7 is another 7. I know it's hard to test Todd or L.Braid in a WC year, but it's the only solution for big games. Instead of Thommo, I would have started Messam as 7 (he wasn't bad either in the game, good work-rate), any thoughts ?
Dagg has written his name on the WC squad list, I wasn't sure before, but he's up to test and WC level. Best AB on the field by far.
Gear has to improve his work-rate. He stayed all day long on his wing. Siti & Guilford are better in this department.
Toeava... If he has to start a game, it's at fullback. My first though were that he had thrown himself out of contention for the WC with several stupid mistakes. But thinking about it, he has done several telling line-breaks. GH, please start him as fullback in Brisbane, he only has done it once against Australia in HK and he was very good.
Mpc-33 August 22, 2011 5:32 pm

SBW has to learn to be direct ! What's the point of weighting 110kg if you can't perforate ! He only knows how to offload.
The AB scrum suffered. I thought it was Afoa's fault but when B.Franks came on, it became even worse. Woodcock was dominated by J.Du Plessis but has done well since he only returns from injury.
I think the AB's lacked of a physical lock. Hoeata should have started ahead of Whitelock. But I have to admit that the Whitelock-Williams combination brought stability to the AB's lineout.
About Slade... Well I won't be harsh with him. Yes, he missed all his kicks from kickable position, yes he threw some wayward passes and some of its tactical kicks were questionable. But I think he showed he is not lacking creativity ball in hand. His defence was solid, too. Yes, he's not Carter, but who can be ?
Let's put this in perspective :
Against and in SA (with jet-lag) renowned for its torrid stadium ambiance and aggressive loose forwards.
Without any back-up on the bench and with the kicking and game-leading responsibility.
Honestly, even DC hasn't started his career this way.
Moreover, NZ has only two back-up choices at fly-half, Cruden & Slade (don't tell me about Evans, he's overseas, he's not considered.). I think GH will stick with Slade and has to. He's in the same mould as Carter but needs game-time to improve on the international scene.
I wish GH will give him another chance in Brisbane, with D.C on the bench.
And again, congrats to SA for the win, see you in WC final phases !
Sorry again for my english

Bored of seeing poin August 22, 2011 9:11 pm

Habana can still run the ball, right? Spies is supposed to be some sort of phenom, and as Smit demonstrated last game and the Beast at various times, the front row aren't afraid to carry it either. Yet you score by kicking. Yaaawwwwwwwwwn. Even Scotland is scoring tries, rather than just relying on Parks and Paterson's inhuman kicking accuracy. Why compromise? The Kiwis and Ozzies aren't gonna stop ragging on you (and rightly so) until you beat them with tries, and lots of them. So get it together. If I wanted to see the ball kicked, I'd watch soccer.
Anonymous August 22, 2011 11:45 pm

The south african b's go to new zealand and get completely out played, the ab's b side go to south africa and the boks have to resort to kicking penalties from 50 out.

TheRangi87 August 23, 2011 12:31 am

However, until that happens I feel that the referees and TMO's should follow the rule book to the letter and not rule on the forward pass.
This would ensure consistent and fair refereeing to all teams. There would be huge problems if some referees broke the rules and some didn't at the WC, as it would be unfair. This would cause a lot of controversy. What do y'all reckon?

Why should we not return the favour?
Big hits in NH games never get appreciated, line breaks etc... again, never appreciated. SH fans are the most one eyed bunch of cunts I have ever seen (on the forum that is, in person you guys all tend to be normal people!)
At least some of the guys up here can look at a team like Italy and Argentina and say its great to see them improving... You guys instead go to a game and put 50 points on them (well the NZ do) and say "hahaha look at NH rugby!"
It is pathetic and its old, I'm glad to see the boks going down the pan and playing shit boring rugby which is ALWAYS what we get labelled with, and I'm glad to see you guys knock NZ off their winning streak before the final flush!
But really what makes me laugh is this NZ "b-side" is full of "returning from injury" players..... so how the fuck is it a b-side?!?!? ah yes... because King Richie and Dan Carter were not playing!
Honestly its pathetic, unlike you guys I can enjoy rugby without having to wear my team colour tinted shades!
