Casey Laulala's big hit on Owen Farrell - Barbarians vs England

Today the Barbarians play again, this time against Wales at the Millennium Stadium. Last weekend they played England, and got a bit of a hiding but not without leaving a few bruises, with this hit in particular standing out.

All Black capped centre Casey Laulala will be leaving the Cardiff Blues and heading to Munster for next season. Earlier this week he told WalesOnline that the Welsh Rugby Union need to step up their game if they are to prevent more big players leaving the regions.

"Hopefully they’ll do something sooner rather than later. There’s some great talent coming through and it’s just sad that the experience is not going to be passed down to those guys.

"I’ve enjoyed it here, very much so. I guess at the end of the day it came down to the situation of where the regions are in Wales. It was tough. The Blues stuck to their guns and unfortunately some of us foreigners were stuck in the middle of the whole thing.

"I am looking forward to a new challenge at Munster now, but I’m still sad to leave," he added.

Today he'll be up against some former Blues teammates as the Barbarians face Wales in Cardiff. The majority of the focus will be on Shane Williams, playing what should be (you never know) his final game of top flight rugby, also against former colleagues.

"Of course, Shane is with us for this game, which is great. He has to score a try and he will!"

Laulala will be in the midfield with Mike Tindall, looking to make an impact once again though, and putting in a few more big hits like the one he made on Owen Farrell last weekend.

Idiot. With a situation like that your meant to hit them like that to draw them inwards, towards the forwards. It annoys me when people on this site try to discreddit perfect tackles like this one. Learn your rugby, please, and be more positive.

These commentators p**s me off... They barely even reference the tackle which in my opinion is one of the best hits of the year! Instead all they care to talk about is the English attack and 'toughness' of Owen Farrell... Anyone else hate biasness like this? Give credit where credit is due in rugby-- that's what I say...

They are biased towards weird things sometimes, not always English either. They are just really crappy commentators, several times a game I have to mute them. They tend to be just great bandwagon supporters of certain players and teams whether they are playing well or not.

In all honesty, did you listen to the video? I mean they were annoying no doubt, but more than once they commented on the tackle... firstly there was a bit of info on Laulala's future with a bit about the tackle, then towards the end there was a comment of "fantastic tackle".... yes it wasn't drummed up as much as it probably should have been but it wasn't "barely" referenced..

He should have been carded for that!! It disgusts me how they let things go in friendly matches, Farrell could have been seriously hurt...........

NO attempt on Laulala's part to wrap the arms...... a very dangerous shoulder spear hit.

I hope the IRB does something about this.......... and I hope no mothers with young kids were watching.

What is it with the pacific isalanders? maybe the IRB should nvestigate whether all of our money that they give them should be spent educating them on how to tackle properly!

You think that was a dangerous tackle?? For gods sake....that was a perfectly good, solid hit! Rugby is going down a slippery slope with all this talk about dangerous tackles....SPEAR tackles are dangerous. This was neither a spear/tip tackle nor was it a shoulder charge! You worry about him getting hurt?? Welcome to rugby. You ask rugby players, would you rather score a try or put in a good hit that keeps your opponent down, 90% would say the big hit! There's something seriously wrong with people like you........... you'll only be satisfied if there's people dying on the field........... young Owen farrell dodged a bullet here.

The IRB need to crack down on this reckless use of shoulders......... shoulders really have no place in the game of rugby.

God gave us arms to grab, wrestle and smother other men with........... this is what should be allowed.

Say what you want but Laulala is a criminal in my eyes who is turning a whole generation away from the game.

I seriously think you should consider a different sport, he's a criminal lol??? This wasn't a shoulder charge, watch rugby league if you want to see a shoulder charge!! People dying?? How over f**king dramatic are you?? You probably better not watch any of the games this weekend in case the big mean wugby pwayers hurt each other, the big meanies as they are! Better still, watch it, record it, and take the evidence to the police if god forbid anybody touches each other!

Go take up the interpretation with the IRB......... thats how its been slanted because of a blanket ruling. And it confuses the hell out of people.

Do you think that casual fans after watching some of the decision in union and interpretations by refs and commentators have a clue as to the difference between a classic rugby league shoulder charge, and other 'no attempt to wrap' tackles?......... its like outlying all forms of juggling, because some decided to do it will flaming knives........ No! outlaw juggling with flaming knives!

I'm just sick of all this death and destruction ;-)

There was no spear tackle there. A spear tackle involves picking the player up, slightly contradicting yourself there if there were noarms in the tackle.
The game is moving on from the "generation" you talk about it's not about legging people in the tackle it's about knocking them 6 yards back.
Commentators and crowds still appreciate a good top of the socks tackle but these guys don't spend their life in the gym for nothing. I'ts about brute strength and that was a great example of it.

Do us all a favour and don't post rubbish about something that you could not be furthr away from the truth about.

Up and Away, You clearly are generations away from an ever evolving collision sport. Big men vs little men is a game of physics. Mass x Velocity = momentum and the quicker and bigger international players get the more ferocious collisions will become! If it was a illegal hit there would have been recognition from England players and the crowd. People like you ruin the sport and push a negative image towards the greatest marvel in world rugby (big ferocious and legal defences). Make sure when you lie down your bed wraps both its arms round and cradles you gently. Perhaps invest in some sanitary towels on your way there too!
