Midweek Madness - Trevor Nyakane goes into Beast mode with incredible lift

Yes, it's happened again. As the Cheetahs picked up a well deserved 27-26 away win over the Waratahs in Friday’s Super Rugby clash, we saw another incredible moment from a prop at a restart. And no, this time it wasn't the Beast. Not the original anyway.
In 2011 fans watched on in disbelief as Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira held Sharks skipper Keegan Daniel up in the air as he acrobatically claimed a high restart in the Currie Cup. Daniel had to stretch to get the ball, but the Beast held him up by his shorts as his legs pointed skywards.
A year later the same thing happened in Super Rugby, except that time it was with the much heavier lock, Anton Bresler. Freakishly, it happened again to a lesser extent shortly after that.
At the weekend though we saw a repeat performance by a South African prop and lock, this time with young Cheetahs loosehead Nyakane, who supported big Francois Uys at a restart.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this was beautifully executed.
If you listen carefully at around 16 seconds there's also some amusing noises coming from Cheetahs flyer Raymond Rhule, who scored twice on the night but got stuck under a Waratahs player at the ruck, and made sure everyone knew about it.

Not saying it should be banned but seriously someone needs to sort out some consistency.

i'd ban it completely....
just catch the ball normally & play ......... no blocking off support players etc, so easier to referee as well

You cannot touch a guy in the air, the jumper is "in the air" therefore he can make a nice clean (hopefully) catch and he has all the time in the world to do it, rather than perhaps catch a nice high ball with your feet firmly planted and get steam rolled by the opposition pack.

New law needed, get rid of it.

As anyone who has played lock or received from the kick-off will know, the prop merely shadows you and its up to you to get into position. He is your support for YOUR jump, it's not him who dictates it.
@ Citing Commisioner, you want to penalise players for putting their team mates in danger now..?
PS: Lighten up. This and Beasts was spectacular and nobody was hurt. Safe to say they are not doing it deliberately.

I'm not convinced that LAW allows such protection ?

Imagine 3 players, 2 lifters 1 jumper, the first lifter is closest to the opposition posts, then the jumper, then the last lifter is closest to his own posts... Now as soon as the jumper catches the ball wouldn't the first lifter now be in an offside position/block, in the same way that a player can be "accidentally offside" when his team mate runs into him. So maybe 1 lifter BEHIND the jumper is like a player binding onto another one to pick and go in a ruck situation, and perhaps there is no direct law that says when a player can or cannot bind onto another, therefore as I said this is just simply a case of taking into account 2 factors neither of which appear to be "illegal" in their separate occurrences:
1st - The jumper is in the air, therefore cannot be touched - according to the laws.
2nd - The support player is bound on behind player (in this case a jumper) for whatever reason he sees fit..
A bit muddled but hopefully you'll get what I mean..

Lifting a player from the ground & dropping .........
Maybe the 1st RED card in history without an opponent being involved ! & with a brilliant kicker maybe 3pts as well !
LOL

Take a player past the horizontal so say 181 degrees when he hits the ground and you could be looking at a red card.
Do this and perhaps drop your player at the pinnacle of the situation; so he goes head first into the ground like a dart, and there are no sanctions (probably).
See whats wrong with this picture? Maybe you should get back onto your games console and set the difficulty to "rookie player", you might find you have a little more luck understanding..

browner March 23, 2013 12:27 am

, then lets apply a similar protection to the ball carrier in every tackle situation......?
proposal....from now on any player carrying the ball can only be tackled by small players, unless a big player can prove he's using only 50% of his power/speed.
there, thats parity established.
hey..i've got an idea pro player ....... ball carrier jumps up before the tackler arrives , & is carried forwward by his teammates, who are either side of him, but not in front......no-one can tackle any of them TRY TIME !
thumbs up?
