The Top 5 Individual Tries of all time - Rugby HQ

Ahead of the weekend it's time for another Top 5, taking a look at the latest selection from Rugby HQ, this time showcasing some of the best individual tries of all time. There's also a chat with the winner, and a you can enjoy the best of the rest too.

Subjective for the most part, picking these couldn't have been easy, especially when trying to add an Australian slant to it for the local viewers (let's not forget this show goes out live in Australia).

Sean Maloney and team have done a great job though, and we're treated to a brilliant mix of new and old classic tries, from legends such as Jonah Lomu, John Kirwan and Serge Blanco.

For the British & Irish Lions fans that were shocked to see the quality of the try that Reds flyer Luke Morahan scored last weekend, at number 9 is a look at what he's done in the past.

And as mentioned above, over the page we have the next five, those that didn't quite make it, so make sure you check those out too, as there are some scorchers.

#10 - Jesse Mogg against the Sharks in this year's Super Rugby

#9 - Luke Morahan's great solo effort vs the Brumbies

#8 - Matt Burke classic vs the All Blacks in 1996

#7 - Rupeni Caucau vs France at the 2003 Rugby World Cup

#6 - Radike Samo's try of the year against the All Blacks in 2011

Some aussies are so 'one-eyed'... JK definately deserves top spot for this category.

Christian Cullen's effort from under his own posts is very conspicuous by its absence - understand the need to load this with Ozzies, but for Cullen's not even feature in the top 10 is mental.

No argument with the winner though, thought that was absolutely brilliant by Genia. I remember watching and when he first got the ball I thought "what is he doing, he's going nowhere!" and then *boom* he was away!!

Yeah, by seeing the title my first thought was "Christian Cullen". He could have a top 5 all alone though. Jonah Lomu or Caucaunibuca would also be serious contenders.

Based on the calibre of the players he beats and the space he has to work in it's hard to look past Heymans vs New Zealand:

I guess about half of Lomu's try could be candidate but in my humble opinion this one against France should be in the top 10.

That one is sick, a team try as much as a personal performance by Horne.

Gareth Edwards with "That" try?

Christian Cullen yes.

Campo had some unfathomable tries for the waratahs.

But my all time favourite, is Shane Williams vs Scotland in 2008. His greatest try in his testimonial year (world player of the year). His try against France in 2010 is also individual brilliance.

BOD has scored many tries which equal and in some cases surpass this selection. I suppose not being from the Southern Hemisphere must be his weakness!

This has been out for almost a week now. Rugbyonslaught had it up 5 days ago. Thanks for recommending them because they are doing exactly what Rugbydump originally did. They're basically making all your posts way before you do, and more. I was a massive RD fan until they slowed down dramatically and changed their content a bit - not sure recommending the other guys was a great idea.

I must have watched this video about a hundred times before and just never get tired of it! He's magnificent this man.

Killing in the name such a great soundtrack and actually very appropriate when you consider Caucau's playing record.

Where was the Victor Matfield chip over, gather and score? Not bad solo skills for a nearly 7ft 2nd rower!!

I was surprised that John Bentley's try against Orange Freestate on the '97 Lions tour when he beat pretty much the whole team

It's great with these top 10s, nobody agrees and everyone posts their favorites. Keep'em comin!!
I'll add some schooling by Mr. Wesley Fofana... (watch out for the hand-offs)

Awesome. I remember when RD first posted the one v Toulouse someone pointed out how on the last hand-off the movement to shift the ball to the other hand and the fend are completely simultaneous. Skill and power combined.

How about the Chris Ashton try vs Australia a couple of years ago? How about the underwood try in the 95 RWC vs Australia. How about Jason Robinson skinning Latham with a mtre to run in for the lions in 2001. What about Ben Cohen against Australia in the 2003 summer tour? ;-)

There's some good tries in the clips, but the wallaby tinted specs do make these a bit of a joke. Still great concept and are all good fun so keep them coming please

Surely Ngweny's try against South Africa/Habana ranks in the top 10. It was the try of the 2007 World Cup! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mgEIVIWAOQ

I think that Shane Williams' try against Fiji in the 2007 RWC was deserving of a top 10 place:

This is one of the best individual tries I have seen, chip, one handed catch whilst jumping and sidestepping, hand-off and pace to finish!

Not sure about scores involving 1 or 2 kicks, as there is always an element of luck involved.

BOD scored one that RD highlighted some years back for Leinster vs (I think) Bath, which was pretty good within that style. Also, at least that one involved a (semi-illegal!) kick of the second ball out of a player's hands (more or less, it was debated much).
But in gen, I'm underwhelmed by these (double) kick tries. Like Habana's recent one that was supposedly try of the year.

For me, its stepping, hand offs, speed, swerves, vision, hand swooping, quality of opposition and importance of match etc that makes a great solo try, bringing a kick into it can of course result in a score, but reduces the skill level because chance enters the equation to a greater degree.

Haw about Stuart Hogg' try against Italy. Must be the best because it was a 14 pointer. Italy would have been in under the posts if he hadn't plucked it out of the air. And before anyone says he was lucky to go for the intercept, look again at the video and you will see Laidlaw telling him to go for the other man as he felt he has the ball carrier covered. And by the way the one Hogg scored against the English Saxons for Scotland A was just as good. Both are on youtube
