Best Tries in the Top 14 2013/2014 - Round 1

The Top 14 is back underway with the new season having kicked off last weekend. As we've become accustomed to, each week TV station Canal Plus puts together their selection of the best tries scored in that round. So here's a look at the latest.

The top ten compilations only gets released on the weekend of the next round, so this is the most recent availible, featuring the best tries from the opening round of play (round 2 has just passed).

It's ten minutes worth of great rugby, some tries better than others, but look out for some things in particular, namely a great step from former Toulon centre Gabi Lovobalavu, Hosea Gear's first ever try for Toulouse, and some incredible pace from Metuisela Telebula for Bordeaux.

Also, Camille Lopez was involved in a winning try for Perpignan, and former All Black flyer Joe Rokocoko got on the end of a pretty special try for Bayonne.

We'll have more Top 14 action soon, and remember you can get your requests in for moments from the Top 14, Currie Cup, ITM Cup and anything else you've seen that you think should be featured.

Drop us an email with requests or connect and get in touch via Facebook and Twitter

That is awesome. Those four defenders thought they had that well covered. Great awareness and skill.

Am I the only one who's ears bleed when the French try to pronounce the name 'Smith'?

Well we don't have the sound "th" in french so a lot of us replace it by "ss". Sorry about that :)

Are you French? How do you pronounce your name? Quite an unfortunate name for a Frenchman isn't it!

I am French, and it's pronounced "Nah-tt-an" (with an ending sound that appears to not exist in English - /??/ in IPA). I also do need to speak English a lot in my job. This can be a bit embarrassing when I need to present myself to both French and English speakers, as I never know which pronunciation to chose (and both are REALLY different) :)

The "-th-" does not exist in french.

So "SmiSS" is usually used rather than "smiFF" cause it sounds better, in french, of course.

But sometimes french speakers got problems with french names too !
In the video : both speakers agreed to replace the mouthfull "Jean-François Coux" by a shorter "Jeff".

Jeff - brilliant!

I would prefer to hear a French commentator saying Smeess than the kiwis' abomination - cf Been Smuth, (aka Ben Smith).

#8 is fucking jammy. Final kick was the wrong option and only a massive stroke of luck saved him looking a complete idiot.

Enjoyed #6 too - cracking lineout and carry by the wing, then Lovobulavo: "I'm going to step you, I'm going to step you, I'm going to - booom! Don't say you weren't warned!"

i wouldn't rate these as 'top tries' in any other league, most of them were just down to hard work... no quick show of skill and minimum amount of individual flair! the try in first place yes.
