Fantasy Six Nations: Opening Weekend Top Tips

The 2017 Six Nations launches this weekend so the time has come to pick your fantasy team from scratch, but how much can you rely on last year’s tournament? This quick guide should help you to beat your mates for bragging rights in round one.

Every year the Northern Hemisphere rugby fraternity gather together to watch the ever growing Six Nations and each weekend we embrace the voices of Eddie Butler and Brian Moore booming around the local pub.

But we often find ourselves supporting the opposite team hoping to gain extra points in our fantasy rugby team and ultimately take the bragging rights in the office league table.

While we're running a Rugbydump match picking pool on Superbru, we're aware that many of you play elsewhere too, so here are some useful tips for maximising your chances of glory in this year’s fantasy leagues.

5 Tips for your Fantasy Six Nations Team

1 CAPTAINS – It is always a good idea to pick as many team captains as you can in the opening round because they are almost guaranteed to get points for a full appearance.

2 WILD CARD – Always leave space in your team for one ‘wild card’ – a player who is good, but not the crowd favorite. Although this is a gamble, if it pays off it will set you apart from the rest of your league. A young player who is less known is often a good choice for a wild card.

3 HOOKERS – More often than not a hooker will join the back of a driving maul after throwing the ball into a lineout, so they have a much greater opportunity of scoring a try than a prop. Plus three of the six captains in the tournament are hookers.

4 KICKERS – The most consistent and reliable point scorer each week will be your designated goal kicker because they receive a point every time they strike the ball between the points. So choosing a kicker who will play the whole match and has a good range is crucial to your hopes of fantasy glory.

Another top tip is to pick the goal kicker who will be playing against Italy each week because they are likely to have the most shots at goal.

5 STARTERS – It sounds basic, but make sure every player is guaranteed to start the game. Each nation releases their squad during the week of each round and if half of your team is on the bench, you won’t get many points.

These tips should put you in good stead for the opening round but it is important to make full use of available transfers, so keep updated with these weekly tips and dream of a fantasy knighthood.
