Rising star Anthony Belleau impresses in latest Toulon victory

Toulon recorded their second Top 14 win in three matches last weekend as they beat Toulouse 20-16 at the Stade Félix Mayol. At the centre of much of what Toulon did well was new fly-half Anthony Belleau, who put in another impressive performance.

The 21 year-old, who came up through the ranks at Agen before entering the Toulon Academy, was a central figure in the French under 20 side in 2015 and 2016, scoring 12 tries.

Since his sensational match-winning drop-goal in last season's Top 14 play-off against La Rochelle, Belleau is now a regular starter for Toulon, as the former champions continue to search for a 10 to fill the void left by Jonny Wilkinson in 2014.

Belleau might be a few years from realising his true potential but his form so far this season has been a crucial facet of Toulon's success.

His game management, both against Toulouse and the opening round against Pau, was critical in getting Toulon on the front foot, notably through his Wilkinson-esque kicking out of hand.

He is also an attacking flyhalf who doesn't appear to be scared of running from deep, and has caused more than a few problems for the opposition in the rounds so far.

Toulon recently signed former All Black Luke MacAlister from Toulouse to cover the flyhalf role shared by Belleau and François Trinh-Duc, but how much game time in that jersey the Kiwi will get with Belleau in such form, is hard to say right now.

Has France finally found the sort of flyhalf they've been looking for?
