Baa Baas denied unique try in classic team move against the Wallabies

There were plenty of talking points during Australia’s 31-28 victory over the Barbarians in Sydney last weekend, most notably a typical Baa Baas trick play which nearly paid off.

We’re used to seeing something different when the Barbarians show up. It’s one of the great aspects of the invitational club.

But there was criticism of referee Brendon Pickerill, who disallowed an ingenious “up-the-jumper” try from prop forward Taniela Tupou, before issuing two yellow cards to Barbarian players late in the game.

Tupou’s try that wasn’t a try was something special though and showed a new level of creativity from the Barbarians. Indeed, such was their preparation during the week, they even made sure Tim Nanai Williams was in front of his team-mates when tapping it, so as not to get pinged for offside.

As the huddle of players dispersed, Tupou was left with the ball disguised up his jersey on his way to the line. But Pickerill wasn’t having any of this and, rightly or wrongly, disallowed the score citing "unsportsmanlike play".

The decision was one of many that frustrated Barbarians skipper Quade Cooper, and angered outspoken former Wallabies coach, Alan Jones. The press conference turned into quite an event (see below), as the duo explained that the referee was well aware of what they planned to do.

Australia went on to claim a narrow victory in the end, with Duncan Paia'aua touching down twice and adding three conversions.

BaaBaas' Cooper, who was one of the visitors sin-binned, slotted four kicks after tries from Andrew Ready, Tom Banks and a double from Waratahs winger Taqele Naiyaravoro.
