Rugby Tactics: Quick Ruck Ball Key to Wasps Success

Me too. I was never coached at a high level, and seeing more of the mini-battles that go on in every phase enormously enhances my enjoyment as a spectator, despite not playing anymore.

Michael Hooper cited for this dangerous cleanout on Mike Brown

I think you're right. The fact that Brown showed such good a) balance and b) character and c) self control may have cost him, and that can't be allowed to stand. And I too find this a difficult thing to claim neutrality on.

Friday Funnies - Dan Biggar's bizarre kicking ritual, the Biggar Shuffle

He's not missed in the tournament so far. Whatever works.

Nemani Nadolo banned for dangerous David Pocock clean out

No, Nadolo was very unlucky. Reading the citation, it was actually the fact that Pocock ended up being dropped on his head, and the suspicion that it wasn't entirely an accident (the bit about Nadolo twisting his body to throw DP aside).
Wood however was cynical, the ball had rolled away, as can be clearly seen here:

Nemani Nadolo banned for dangerous David Pocock clean out

Thanks for posting this RD. It was a mystery to me as I'd not seen anything. That looks very harsh to me. How did Nadolo get a ban for this and Tom Wood not get one for a blatant kick to the head?

Jamie Roberts excellent pick up off his toes in top Racing Metro performance

I'm starting to rethink duel contracts if Jamie is developing like that at Racing. What an exciting prospect for the 6 Nations if he's running through a team of Saints' quality like that. North is looking sharper than he before the move too. I hate to say it but it seems to have done them good.

Stuart Hogg apologises after red card challenge on Dan Biggar

Agreed, I think shipping 41 unanswered points is punishment enough.

The British and Irish Lions win the series 2-1 after third Test rout

Brian O'Driscoll on today's win:
"I'm delighted, it’s been a rollercoaster week for me but it’s all about being a part of it… I will always have it on my CV and the negatives will be forgotten. Huge credit goes to the players, the management and staff."

Respect is due to a great player, great man and great servant to the Lions over the years. On this occasion he didn't suit the game plan, which involved a dominant scrum and as many of the biggest, hardest ball-carriers as possible - hence Roberts, Davies and then Tuilagi in midfield. The close selections were decided not by nationality but by this plan bar one exception (Bowe for Cuthbert).

The plan worked. Some commentators are still patronising BOD as if he should have been carried in the side somehow to avoid hurting his feelings. With 15min left I'd have liked to have brought him on to rapturous applause, but when the selection was made no one could know we'd be 18 pts in front by then. Part of greatness is putting the team ahead of personal ambition. Brian gets that and is truly great.

Drew Mitchell catches the ball between his feet after Leigh Halfpenny penalty

Gutsy, if he'd miss-timed it that could have been a nasty bounce!

Wallabies and British & Irish Lions teams named for first Test on Saturday

I was with you for a bit there, but Tualagi is injured, and Hogg's good but behind Halfpenny, so battling Zebo, Maitland etc for only a bench spot. Maitland may have ousted Zebo only to have a token Scot. Cuthbert never seems outstanding, but his minutes-per-try stat is phenomenal. Whatever you think of it, when Gatland's in doubt he picks a bruiser, and it's an instinct that usually serves him well. He explained why he picked Corbisiero, and if you don't agree that you need to start your best scrummager, can I suggest you re-watch the 1st Lions test of '09?
