3rd man in is supposed to always be a red card, because it's what escalates everything, whether or not the "intent" is to "break it up". Liam Messam has no business being involved at all as the "waterboy". Thankfully the rest of the AB and Wallabies pitch side support crew aren't as moronic as him and didn't rush out onto the field as well in a baseball style dug out clearing. »
@whiteafrican. I did ref for quite a while. I was taught to, and did, penalize it whenever I saw it on the basis that it's presumably an attempt to collapse, and just generally dangerous play under 10.4(k). Even during the ELVs, which allowed collapsing a maul legally - by pulling it down - did not allow
So sad. Not many All Blacks who endear themselves to me - but you were a dead set legend, on my list of "blokes I'd love to have a beer with". I guess we'll have to do it after the big match in the sky. Doubly devastating is that I found out today that another legend of rugby passed away in an accident yesterday. Carl Maresca was a legend of New York rugby - an uncompromising prop forward and then referee who lived for the game, and was very generous with his time. His passing won't have the broad scale impact that JC's will on the rugby world, but it's important to recognize Carl and his contributions nonetheless. So to both you big fellas, Vale.
