The Wallabies claim comfortable victory over Ireland in Dublin

I am of the view that he was not holding the ball. In that case, downward pressure is required to score a try. If you are of the view that he was still "holding" the ball, then we are disagreeing on facts, not law. So be it.

The Wallabies claim comfortable victory over Ireland in Dublin

Erm... There is.
Law defines a try: "Try. When an attacking player is first to ground the ball in the opponents’ in-goal, a try is scored."

Law 22.1 defined "grounding".
"There are two ways a player can ground the ball:
(a)
Player touches the ground with the ball. A player grounds the ball by holding the ball and touching the ground with it, in in-goal. ‘Holding’ means holding in the hand or hands, or in the arm or arms. No downward pressure is required.12
(b)
Player presses down on the ball. A player grounds the ball when it is on the ground in the in-goal and the player presses down on it with a hand or hands, arm or arms, or the front of the player’s body from waist to neck inclusive. "

Ok so its says presses down on the ball. Not "downward pressure". If you are not "holding" the ball, then you need to press the ball down on the ground.

British and Irish Lions start strong with convincing win over the Barbarians

The first try was from a dummy my mum wouldn't fall for, and the second was just a defensive positioning error from a scratch side resulting in a gap you could drive a truck through and nobody came within metres of him. Yeah, he spotted the gap, but so did I sitting behind the goal posts 100 metres away. Two world class tries? He'll have to do better than that with the Aussie back row covering.

Mate we play every week in those conditions here in Singapore without the dropsies. And without two water breaks a half. No different to playing in the wet.

Vincent Clerc's incredible try saving tackle on Max Evans

My French is crap but I do a bit of refereeing. I believe this is not a ruck penalty - as has been pointed out, clearly the conditions for a ruck didn't exist - but rather that the penalty was for incorrect entry to the tackle area. White 15 plays the ball, Red 12 tackles him and he spills the ball backwards but it lands next to him, hence it's still in the tackle area. Red 11 is then required to come "through the gate" to play the ball as he was not the tackler. He did not, hence the penalty, which prevented a possible try, put not sufficiently certain to give a penalty try, hence the yellow. Superb refereeing.

For your edification, 15.6(d): "At a tackle or near to a tackle, other players who play the ball must do so from behind the ball and from directly behind the tackled player or the tackler closest to those players’ goal line."

The Stormers vs Cheetahs chaos in Cape Town

I thought Walsh handled that as well as a ref can ever handle those types of incidents. No real instigator - let's get back to playing rugby and let the authorities take action afterwards.

Aironi's Simone Favaro smashes Ospreys replacement Tom Isaacs

Don't forget that as a rule, most refs do so because they are fans of the game. I coach, have a broken body so can't play (much) anymore, but still have a run around as a ref because it gets me, as a fan, the best seat in the house. I don't know any high-level refs, but I'm sure it's the same for them.

Jim Hamilton and David Paice shown red cards after being sin-binned

I didn't think the 2 YCs were a bad idea since tempers were obviously flaring and a little settling down was required. But a bad error by Dave Pearson to send them off, under the circumstances, at the same time. Separate the awarding, get one player clear, then the next. If you break up two blokes who were just going at it, don't cool it down, and ask them to walk off the field effectively next to each other, this result shouldn't be a surprise.

Will be interesting to see if there are any other citing, e.g. for the little shove on the AR.

And Paice is an idiot for trying to take him on a second time. He got what was coming to him.

Huge hit on Samoa's Uale Mai at the Las Vegas Sevens

They're the same thing, other than a spear is a tip tackle where the tackler actually drives ("spears") the player into the ground.

Have you ever played rugby? There are plenty of ways to be physically dominant in a tackle without inverting a player and putting them at immediate and heightened risk of serious permanent injury. With the eradication of spear tackles, the game will be just as physical, and there will be less ex-players in wheelchairs and less ammunition for lawyers going forward.
