Friday Funnies - Physio halts Zebre attack with tackle on own player

Ouch. Can't imagine losing under those circumstances. I bet the physio feels terrible!

Fabrice Estebanez knockout hit on David Strettle

Pitiful. Hope he gets a long ban. Hore's sentence was far too lenient in my book, and I'd love to see get a more appropriate ban for this. And the two hits are exactly the same: hit from behind, and then a blow on the player as they're falling to the ground. Clearly intentional and malicious. It's a pity though; with all the politicking, he's probably only gonna get 5 weeks since that's what Hore got and disciplinary panels have received enough flak for supposedly being NZ-biased. They won't wanna add to the litany of cases where NZ players got less than other players. Enough politics and let's get a codified standard and procedure for disciplinary panels.

Tom Varndell tip tackle on Horacio Agulla

After he lifts him in the air, Varndell takes a good three steps before driving him into the ground. Granted, at the point he beings driving him into the ground, Agulla looks horizontal. From where I stand it looks intentional. But the fact that Agulla was horizontal makes it legal in my mind, so I'd say this is harsh, but just barely, as it is easy to see how this could have ended badly if Agulla landed on his neck. It was pretty close to a spear, IMO.

But all this begs the question: is "beyond 90 degrees" the best way to determine when a dump tackle becomes overly dangerous? I don't have any answers

Toby Flood faces ban for alleged dangerous tackle on Andy Goode

A lot of tip tackles happen IMO when the tackling player also falls over. When the tackler loses their footing, they're hardly able to correct the angle in which they're holding the tackled player. In this case, it looks throughout most of the tackle, Flood keeps his feet. Plus, he does lift Goode. Flood doesn't strike me as a mean player, so I don't think he meant to tip him, but at the very least he didn't make much of an effort not to tip him. Whether or not that's grounds for a ban I don't know.

Nick Evans and Jonathan Davies pick their British & Irish Lions starting XV

Whenever I read these lists, I think on the fact that Gatland has said he's taking 30+ players, so if I have a problem with a selection (say, Roberts over Tuilagi or Jenkins over Healy) I know there's a good chance that the "other" player will be selected anyway. BUT, I do think some of these names shouldn't be brought along at all, namely Easter. Sure, he's performing well at club level, but so are Billy Vunipola, Ben Morgan, and Tom Waldrom. All of these players have better international hopes than Easter so surely they're better picks? Also, Courtney Lawes: I know he's a big guy, but I've only really ever seen him run straight upright into contact, making his size useless.

The Rugby Championship 2012 Highlights montage

Quality video, that. My favourite game was Argentina v Australia in the Gold Coast, although South Africa v New Zealand in Johannesburg was also great. I like some of the individual moments like Hernandez's banana kick that I had forgotten about. On the whole, an awesome tournament if you ask me. Can't wait for next year.

Toulon turn it on at home with thrashing of Sale Sharks

I am amazed at Toulon's ability to make plays out of complete disorganization. I am also amazed at how poorly Sale is doing in all competitions. I think their campaign(s) in the Premiership, Anglo-Welsh Cup, and Heineken Cup are effectively over. Relegation in the Premiership is highly likely at this point.

Biarritz beat Connacht in drenched conditions at the Parc des Sports Aguilera

hahahaha I love playing in games like that! You always feel like a little child playing in the mud. But that might well be the soggiest pitch I have ever seen. I love that in this sport, we don't care if it's this muddy.

Heineken Cup Round 3 - Four of the bigger games

When I read the scorelines, I thought most of these games were going to boring kicking duels. And I must say that generally that was the case. You can tell how boring the Sale v Toulon game must have been if that's all the highlights they have. But it seems like Connacht v Biarritz was pretty good, and Clermont v Leinster surprised me somewhat. Maybe I ought to stop being so pessimistic and learn to love kicking duels for a different kind of match that make the high try-scoring ones more memorable.
