Rugby Tactics: Screened Passing Analysis

This is great for higher levels, but as with many non-standard moves it's difficult to not only do correctly at lower levels but also hard to call correctly and consistently with weekend warrior referees. Most of the time the moves you see here would likely be called obstruction as there's often some contact with the defenders by the player running ahead. It might be because the defender has bit on the runner or that the runner initiates the contact, but it'll still look like obstruction to most lower levels refs. Then again, you might get the opposite on any given day, where the ref lets it all go even if it is obstruction.

The Top 10 Tries in Rugby World Cup History

I have no issue with the Lomu try at #1 (still one of my favourites all time and likely most memorable) but thought Robinson's counter against Wales in 2003 (with Greenwood finishing it off) might get a mention.

Friday Funnies - Sona Taumalolo fend looks like a right hook

If that was a fend, then it was the worst technique I've ever seen.

Referees to get stricter as tackle and scrums laws amended

No problem with all three, and the first two are particularly welcome changes.

Sergio Parisse brilliant inside flick sets up try for victorious Stade Francais

I tried that in touch last Thursday and it didn't come off quite the same for some reason...

But that was fantastic!

Ali Williams controversially Sin Binned after colliding with Devin Toner in the air

I don't mind a penalty but a card was a bit harsh. He's clearly jumping for the ball, and you can't try and penalize that out of the game. So long as it's two players in the air challenging for the ball, it should be a fair contest - it doesn't matter that one was being boosted and was higher. Otherwise, what can a player chasing a kick do? Would they have to concede the catch and automatically defend? I'd like to see more responsibility put on the boosters' shoulders in open play like this to ensure he comes down safely, or maybe they stop boosting in open play altogether.

Schalk Burger awarded Comeback of the Year at the 2015 Laureus Awards

Certainly a good story to see his return to form, and I'm sure many players around the world - even opponents - are glad to see him recover.

Francois Steyn banned for 5 weeks after rescinded red card is overturned

It's an important point that Cruden jumps into the tackle, and you can see even Messam lift his hands after the decision in apology to the other team.

But, it doesn't absolve Steyn from the tackling motion he makes where he lifts, then drives while continuing to lift. I think it would have resulted in at least close to a spear tackle but likely still one even without the additions of the other players.

George North knocked out again as Nathan Hughes gets red card for knee

The red is a tough call on Hughes, but he has to be more careful in how he plans that outcome. Players at that level are very aware of timing and he had to know he wasn't close enough to get his foot under the ball to prevent grounding. At best he'd be hoping it wasn't grounded at first and he could kick it out, but then with the ball around the head that would be extremely reckless.

What's more likely is he was careless about coming in to support the tackle and then had no where to step without making contact. That's still on Hughes, but red card/deliberate is a tough outcome. Hopefully it'll teach him to be more careful as no one wants to see injuries from accidental but preventable situations.

Nick Williams cited for dangerous challenge that sent Rhys Patchell to hospital

Not only to have his arm by is side like that (almost awkwardly so, I agree), but to come into a maul standing upright? He's surely a better forward than that to not know he'd have no real power stopping the momentum of the maul.

But then it looks to me like he had other ideas on how to stop the maul, in this case by hitting another player deliberately in the head and knocking him out (or at least causing him to fall to the round) and disrupting the maul.
