Romain Poite takes a low blow as Jannie Du Plessis sees red in Top 14 play-off

Refs got this wrong. The Racing player is cheating not DuPlessis.

So as a coach for youth rugby should I encourage kids to grab and hold players away from the breakdown? It seems as if players may do so with impunity these days.

We must allow players some type of self-regulation.

A closer look at how Professionalism has changed Rugby

DrG, you're correct. In every way other than spectatorship and size of players the game has been diminished. The spirit isn't what it was. Money ruins the purity of sport every time.

All the cool stuff came from the amateur nature of the game.

Rugby (and all sport) should be a hobby and not a profession. Professional rugby from a safety and monetary PoV is not sustainable. Most pro rugby organizations are not profitable. With the post professionalism focus on size, strength, and speed comes catastrophic long term brain injuries. If it was a bunch of part-timers weighing around 200 lbs. we could have played forever without the game being neutered.

Now it's a bunch of low IQ gym rats playing a union/league hybrid and spending their off time with supplements and playstation. We used to be doctors and attorneys...

Australian rugby in 'big trouble' after a number of poor performances

Well put, Larry. The transition from the amateur ethos to a professional (winner take all attitude) is trickling down and making the game less fun to be a participant.

Refs used to be like teachers, now they are like cops. Players from opposing teams used to be best of friends and build life long relationships, now they barely shake hands. We've got guys feigning injury, players complaining to refs, top level athletes walking away from test rugby to make some extra cash; actions unthinkable 10 years back.

Basically rugby is undergoing a change from a participant model to a spectacle model. It's less fun.

Ed Quirk lashes out with elbow and knee after being held off the ball

Let players sort out small stuff. And this is small stuff.

Holding players down means you not belong on the field (or you should prepare for swift justice, which is what this is). The Chiefs player is cheating by preventing the Sunwolves player by preventing him from playing rugby. The Sunwolves player is simply trying to play rugby.

What is a player to do? Complain to a ref? Write their MP? Twitter? Sort the guy out and get on with it.

Ed Quirk lashes out with elbow and knee after being held off the ball

I like the "dick level" quotient and hope it is soon adopted by World Rugby.

Your numbers are skewed. The Chiefs player holding the Sunwolves player has a dick factor of 8.3. the Sunwolves player (that is only trying to get on with the game of rugby) has a dick factor of .4.

Holding a player away from the ball is worse than trying to play rugby.
