A closer look at how Professionalism has changed Rugby

DrG, you're correct. In every way other than spectatorship and size of players the game has been diminished. The spirit isn't what it was. Money ruins the purity of sport every time.

All the cool stuff came from the amateur nature of the game.

Rugby (and all sport) should be a hobby and not a profession. Professional rugby from a safety and monetary PoV is not sustainable. Most pro rugby organizations are not profitable. With the post professionalism focus on size, strength, and speed comes catastrophic long term brain injuries. If it was a bunch of part-timers weighing around 200 lbs. we could have played forever without the game being neutered.

Now it's a bunch of low IQ gym rats playing a union/league hybrid and spending their off time with supplements and playstation. We used to be doctors and attorneys...

Australian rugby in 'big trouble' after a number of poor performances

Well put, Larry. The transition from the amateur ethos to a professional (winner take all attitude) is trickling down and making the game less fun to be a participant.

Refs used to be like teachers, now they are like cops. Players from opposing teams used to be best of friends and build life long relationships, now they barely shake hands. We've got guys feigning injury, players complaining to refs, top level athletes walking away from test rugby to make some extra cash; actions unthinkable 10 years back.

Basically rugby is undergoing a change from a participant model to a spectacle model. It's less fun.

Ed Quirk lashes out with elbow and knee after being held off the ball

Let players sort out small stuff. And this is small stuff.

Holding players down means you not belong on the field (or you should prepare for swift justice, which is what this is). The Chiefs player is cheating by preventing the Sunwolves player by preventing him from playing rugby. The Sunwolves player is simply trying to play rugby.

What is a player to do? Complain to a ref? Write their MP? Twitter? Sort the guy out and get on with it.

I like the "dick level" quotient and hope it is soon adopted by World Rugby.

Your numbers are skewed. The Chiefs player holding the Sunwolves player has a dick factor of 8.3. the Sunwolves player (that is only trying to get on with the game of rugby) has a dick factor of .4.

Holding a player away from the ball is worse than trying to play rugby.

Quade Cooper likely to be suspended following red card vs Lions

Thanks for elaborating.

Perhaps the problem is professional rugby? What I mean is the problems the top 1% of rugby has are not the problems that rugby has at large.

At the levels that most rugby players compete concussions, high ball challenges, and even scrum restarts don't seem to be a problem (in my experience).

What is more important: keeping the laws and spirit of rugby intact for the amateur player or preserving the spectacle of pro ruby for the punter?

NFL, NBA, and MLB all have different rules compared to the amateur level. Maybe rugby should follow.

Quade Cooper likely to be suspended following red card vs Lions

im1 and DanCarter, you guys sound like backline players born in the 1990's,

Does it seem like these incredibly harsh bans are deterring players behavior?

It certainly does not to me. At the last RWC (when players are on their best behavior) refs gave out 56 Yellow cards and 1 red. This is making a joke out of our game. Rugby will always be violent and messy.

This game has gone crazy.

It's definitely a high tackle. Why not just a penalty?

Referee Angus Gardner dissects controversial mid-air contest rulings

Do you sit around with your teammates and say "there ought to be a new law.." or "Gosh I wish rugby was more safe"?

I've never heard players speak that way on 7 clubs, 3 continents and 22 years.

Money is destroying rugby.

Everything that is special about rugby culture comes from the amateur ethos (the way we treat each other, the referee, the way the fans act).

I currently live in America and I know the outcome of the trend of big money in sport. My worst nightmare is coming true, rugby is getting more and more like American football. Look at the Racing Stade Francais merger. Mega clubs manned by international mercenaries ala Champions League is the way of the future.

We've sold our soul to lure the money of casual fans. Such a shame too, rugby union has such magnificent tradition and culture.
