Benoit August playacting after James Short lashes out

For whatever it's worth, I think you meant to put "Biarritz" and not "Bayonne".

Benoit August playacting after James Short lashes out

Resorting to stereotypes is usually pretty petty, but I can't help but notice this is, yet again, a French rugby player in the Top 14. It's embedded in the culture, it would seem. From the passionate fans in the audience down to the management on the sidelines, there seems to be an atmosphere that sort of cultivates players going down a bit 'easy' - not that they're outright faking or have planned it from the beginning (not like the Harlequins a couple seasons ago), but rather it's a situation where, under normal circumstances, a player would have the humility and pride to suck it up and move on, these guys will just go to ground.

Like I said, other sides are not immune to it. One that comes to mind: I remember Giteau falling rather easily a while back, only to botch the penalty kick. Or Brussow falling down rather easily a bit ago.

But without putting much thought into it, I can think of several instances of French players doing it in recent memory...Dupuy is always ready to fall to the ground if he thinks he'll get a penalty, Vincent Clerc, Jerome Fillol, Dimitri Yachvili, and Morgan Parra.

This isn't just a shot at the French, but I think it's something that ought to be discussed, so that people know it's a problem and that it's goddamn silly. Players who pull shit like this need to be called out and admonished for such typical soccer behavior.

Do you think that in future players that act in such a way should possibly be cited?
Yes, and they ought to make them wear a dress the next match.

Schalk Brits inside flick pass for Chris Wyles try

Gotta be something in the kits - those black and red varities; Toulouse's front rowers were running around the pitch like backs today, too.

I know Brits is getting up there in age by rugby standards (ya wouldn't know it watching the guy play, though), and he's also playing overseas...but what would be the chances he'd ever get a call back from the Boks, especially now that PdV is gone, and Smit is leaving a vacancy at hooker?

Biarritz score a sensational team try against Montpellier

And THAT is why I fucking love Biarritz rugby! A tackle, good counterruck, steal the ball, eight passes through seven different players, and the required strength to stay in and touch it down while being tackled for the try. Brilliant.

I just wish we could cultivate that kind of running rugby here in the US so that Ngwenya would get set up for try opportunities like that and it wouldn't seem like he was under-performing when he plays international matches (though to be fair, part of the problem is that he's a finishing winger, and not always the type to go infield looking to make himself available).

Northern Hemisphere XV vs Southern Hemisphere XV - Help for Heroes 2011

Quite. Now it's time to get scientific. We need to repeat this match, but with 3 year olds; that way, we can figure out if the folks down south come out of the womb like that, or if it's just something in the water.

Farewell to Shane Williams - Final try and interviews after the game

That's one of the few sensible posts I've ever seen you make. I agree; it could be nice for him to move down and play Super Rugby (if the Rebels or another team were actually even interested). And it could be fun/interesting for him to play where the game has a different style than up north in the Celtic League. Food for thought.

Farewell to Shane Williams - Final try and interviews after the game

Got both a try saver and scored a try in his final match for Wales. Can't ask for much more than that (other than the win, I guess).

Alesana Tuilagi and Tom Wood red carded following touchline brawl

Dunno. Nothing really wrong with what happened - you go in with punches, expect a red card. Not that I mind seeing a small punch-up here and there, but a match-stopping brawl is unnecessary.

Either way...if you've got long hair, expect it will get pulled at some point. But then if you pull someone's hair, expect to get a punch to the head and your team ought to give you some shit for a while about being a hair-pulling little girl.

Yellows could have been used here, but red works just fine, and the laws say red is justified.

Peter Stringer commits daylight robbery on James O'Connor

O'Connor does have a tendency to take a while at the tee, and has gotten away with not kicking it within the allotted minute after the try before. But I don't think that's what happened here.

It's his somewhat irregular routine (as pointed out in the write-up). He does a little shuffle with his feet, shifting his body weight, and then lifts an arm. From back behind the try line, it could look like he's beginning the kick.

The charge is allowed when "the kicker begins the approach to kick or starts to kick", right? But then, "Neither the kicker nor a placer must do anything to mislead their opponents into charging too soon." So I imagine discretion is just left to the referee.

This clip is hilarious. From Stringer's penchant for being a stone in the other team's shoe at every opportunity, to O'Connor's look of total confusion. Great way to end the first half.

Richie Gray ruins Stephen Donald debut with match winning try

I'm sorry, could you repeat that again? I didn't quite catch it the first couple times ;)

Despite the gratification in seeing Donald do well elsewhere (when he was pretty much dismissed back in NZ), this was a satisfying try. Friggin' Heineken Cup. The only time of the year NH rugby really shines. It's games like this that make it such a great tournament. Plus, it's always good to see a Scottish side come up on top. Doesn't happen often enough.
