Shortlist for IRPA Try of the Year 2012 announced

Savea’s try was good, but certainly not a “try of the year”.

Malzieu’s try looked great, but three of those four attempted tackles were horrendously bad.

Habana’s try is one of those where the right bounce turns a speculative gamble into a great try. So a little lucky, but still great to watch.

And Gear’s try was pure powerhouse stuff – love the way he lined up the poor tackler and dismissed him.

For me it’s a toss-up between Gear and Habana.

Eben Etzebeth in hot water after making contact with Greig Laidlaw's eyes

Being upended in one tackle does not make a player look average. It was a great hit, but being caught off balance like that would have landed anyone on his arse. If he looks "average at best" after that hit, I guess your standards must be impossibly high and no one measures up.

Like adding FULL STOP makes it so. So you would have given him 12 weeks while the panel dismissed it? You're definitely in the right job.

Not joking at all. There was clearly nothing in this, but this over-eagerness to cite does lasting damage to a player's reputation regardless of the outcome. It didn't take most people here long to dismiss it as nothing, so why could Mansell not apply his mind in he same way?

It's a maul and players scrap to secure the upper hand, grappling with each other. As soon as Etzebeth realises he's got the guy by the cheek (yes, the cheek, look again), he lets go.

The same weekend there were far worse incidents that went uncited - the Samoan shoulder charge clean-out on the Welsh flyhalf comes to mind - but now Etzebeth must carry another notch on his dirty play reputation for nothing. You can say what you like, but this stuff adds up.

And in future, if I intend to make a joke, I'll be sure to ad a :) just to clear up any possible confusion.

Rubbish citing by the English commissioner ahead of the England test? Go figure.

This kind of nonsense tarnishes the lad's reputation for good, even if he's 100% innocent.

Samoa stun Wales with impressive win at the Millennium Stadium

Bakkies Botha got a 4 week ban for a far more innocuous ruck clean on Adam Jones in the Lions tour a few years back. Teams like Samoa certainly get away with more when it comes to this kind of thing because, subconsciously, refs accept it as part of their style of rugby. Much the same way the AB's get away with ruck infringements - it's the way they play the game, so how can you really penalise them for it? :)

When it comes to withstanding temperatures of up to minus 160 degrees, no one touches them.

Fecking Jonathan Davies again. Is there a worse commentator in the history of the game? Only thing worse than Davies is Davies when the Welsh are winning. So thank god we didn't have that too.

Scotland's David Denton puts Richie McCaw on his backside

Who is “we”? Once I know your requirements, I can possibly recommend a Strauss that’s right for you. We have a few more. Adriaan Strauss is a blond hooker who will be without a Bok job once Bismarck’s feeling better (although his Bok history might make him slightly ineligible). Then we also have a centre, Andries, who is considered a bit of a journeyman and has just signed for the Kings in Port Elizabeth. Not too flashy, but a strong runner and punishing defender. Can’t think of any more, except maybe Tiaan, who is in his mid to late forties now and hasn’t played in about 15 years. But he’s played for the Boks and Australia (even got a WC medal with them) and used to tackle wildebeest to practice his technique (or so the story goes). Maybe good for a coaching job? Let me know and I’ll set it up.

Denton's a great player and thoroughly deserves his starting place. But now another Saffa no.8 has headed for Scotland and has hinted at hoping to make the Scottish squad one day: the bearded captain of the Lions, Josh Strauss.

And probably an even better loose forward prospect, CJ Stander (from the Bulls) has moved to Ireland and said he'd like to one day play for Ireland.

Not sure what my point is, except that one day we'll have more talent playing abroad than for the Boks.
