How anyone can try and blame the hooker for his body positioning is beyond me! Surely your only thought there is to protect yourself.
Tucking his head in is an instinctive part of the fall in this instance and I think it's cynical for Earls or anyone else to suggest otherwise.

Poor from Steyn, a goalkicker himself too so should definitely have more respect. Well done Nigel Owens, as ever.

All aboard the showboat. I'd do my best to completely nail him next time he was near the ball

Doesn't look great. Clearly a bit too pumped up to remember how to tackle correctly. Technique apparently not as important as being a massive lump anymore!

Where's the value in these midweek games? Win with a scratch team and you've done what was expected, lose and you're an embarrassment. It's not a supportive environment in which to bring through players, nor is it a great rugby spectacle because the team is unbalanced and is just trying to make it through to the weekend unscathed.
I know it's all great fun for the home nation's regional teams, but the unions need to learn to stop flogging their players and brand.
Reminds me of Lions in 2013 when Shane Williams was parachuted in for a pointless fixture. I'd rather watch u20 champ games than this.

Was there intent? Was it late? Could he have done more to avoid the collision?
For me, the jump was a bit reckless (bearing in mind the oppo kicker is always unable to brace himself for contact) and so should be punished. Red could be a bit harsh, but players have a responsibility to protect each other's welfare in the tackle, and I don't view charge downs any differently.

If i get creamed at first receiver it would definitely make me think twice next time I get the ball. That's the whole point - good D

There aren't many tries scored against England that make me smile, but I can't help but love Scott Gibbs' solo effort. What a game - I cant still vividly remember watching it at home aged 13. [Looks nostalgically into the middle distance]

Thanks KK, been playing rugby for years and genuinely wasn't aware of this 10 metre rule (whoops), though I've just checked it out here: http://laws.worldrugby.org/index.php?law=11&language=EN
11.4 a) has an interesting point:
"The offside player must immediately move behind the imaginary 10-metre line or the kicker if this is closer than 10 metres".
My interpretation is that he doesn't need to retreat 10 metres from where the ball lands, but just behind the kicker. So once the kicker passes him, he is onside.
However you may be right that since his initial movement is forward, this is enough to penalise him.
I love rugby but I can understand why my girlfriend doesn't have a clue what's going on.
