England wing Abby Dow could miss the Women’s Six Nations because of injury though she is expected to be back before the end of the Premiership Women’s Rugby season.
The Trailfinders player has broken her hand just over two months before the Six Nations is due to start.
Dow has been a part of a lethal backline with Jess Breach and Ellie Kildunne. The three players were responsible for scoring 18 tries between them in the 2024 Women’s Six Nations.
Head coach Barney Maddison said: “She managed to break her hand. Luckily it is not as bad as we thought it was going to be, so she is out for six weeks.
“She broke a bone in the top of her hand. I think she tried to enter a maul or defend a maul and everyone landed on top of her. It was literally in the last two minutes of the game. But she doesn’t have to have an op on it. So fingers crossed she will be back before the end of the season.”
If she returns in six weeks as planned she will have around a month before England’s Women’s Six Nations campaign starts on 23rd March against Italy.
However, if she does have to miss one or more games in the tournament the wing position is one where the Red Roses have good depth.
Claudia MacDonald has returned from injury and is capable of playing in the position.
There are also players like Millie David, who is the PWR top try-scorer this season, who will be pushing to break into the England squad.
And so while Dow would not be the only wing injury concern for the Red Roses with Bo Westcombe-Evans already ruled out for the rest of the PWR season because of a knee injury, there would not be an injury crisis in play.
