The worst-kept secret in English rugby came to fruition this morning when Argentinian star Santiago Carreras confirmed he will be joining Bath Rugby on a three-year deal.
The news, which has been floating around the major rugby publications for the better part of two weeks, has been treated with great excitement by fans of the receiving club.
The talented playmaker will become one in a long line of players that have headed between the west-country landscape of Gloucester and Bath over the years. Many former stars including Danny Cipriani, Matt Banahan, Mike Tindall, Ian Balshaw and many more have donned both shirts in the past.
Speaking about his new signing, Bath head coach Johan van Graan emphasised: “Santi is a starting Test player and one of the main reasons for signing him is his versatility along with his game-winning abilities.”

The 26-year-old’s versatility will be vital in a team with many strong international pedigree starters. Carreras will compete for the number 10 shirt with British and Irish Lions hopeful Finn Russell – a daunting task for any hopeful starter, just ask Orlando Bailey.
It’s worth noting that Carerras is equally adept at fullback – and occasionally on the wing – where he will compete with the impressive Tom de Glanville – son of former England captain, Phil.
Continuing to welcome his new star, Van Graan added: “I am really looking forward to working with Santi and realise his dream of becoming the best player he can be. Family is very important to both me and Santi, and I believe he will fit in incredibly well in our family-first environment.”
Looking forward to continuing his journey in England, Carreras said: “I moved to the UK in 2020 in the middle of a pandemic, and I’m hugely grateful to be continuing my journey here. I’m excited about contributing to Bath over the course of the next few seasons. I want to push myself to keep improving as a player and to help the club win trophies and titles.
“Having spoken to Johann, the club is in a really exciting phase, with world-class players, coaches and the development of a new stadium. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
Since joining the Cherry and Whites from Jaguares in 2020, Carreras has scored 256 Premiership points including 21 tries, was voted Coaches’ Player of the Season 2022/23, and was an EPCR Challenge Cup finalist in 2024.
Gloucester fans will be pleased that their man will see the season out with the club, only joining Bath this summer ahead of the 2025/26 season.
