A dominant first half carried the Stormers to an opening match win against a resurgent Bulls side, winning 37-24 at Newlands.

Kings vs Jaguares

The Jaguares pulled clear in the second half in Port Elizabeth to ultimately defeat the Kings 39-26 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Cheetahs vs Lions

The Lions nudged past the Cheetahs 28-25 in Bloemfontein on Saturday thanks to a double from Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

Waratahs vs Force

The Waratahs were made to work hard before claiming a 19-13 win over the Force in their Super Rugby opener in Sydney on Saturday.

Crusaders vs Brumbies

The Crusaders made a fine start to their campaign as they claimed a hard fought 17-13 triumph over the Brumbies in Christchurch on Saturday.

Sunwolves vs Hurricanes

The defending champion Hurricanes put on a master class at Prince Chichibu Stadium in Tokyo. The Sunwolves could not cope with the precision, pace and physicality of the visitors who scored 13 tries to win 83-17.

Reds vs Sharks

Sharks fly-half Pat Lambie was all class with the boot but the Reds outscored the visitors from Durban four tries to two to win a tight one at Suncorp 28-26.

Highlanders vs Chiefs

The Chiefs got their Super Rugby campaign off to a fine start when they claimed a deserved 24-15 bonus point victory over the Highlanders in Dunedin

Melbourne Rebels vs Blues

A hat-trick from Rieko Ioane gave the Blues a perfect start to their Super Rugby campaign as they beat the Rebels 56-18 at AAMI Park.

He's a very talented player, big and strong enough for the modern game, but wily and agile as a winger should be. He's clearly up to the standards of an test winger, but alas - competition in NZ for an AB wing spot is too bloody intense. Check out his work rate in last year's SR, Maori All Blacks game and Chiefs vs Wales game. I'm hoping that 2017 is the year this bloke gets a deserved trial in the AB training squad.

On the highlights, Waratahs' hooker Latu won 3 turnover penalties in the first half alone, all of which were successful kicks at goal too. Very impressive.

Lowe is not really in the All Black picture so I guess he doesn't get the same coverage as other players. He's clearly very talented, but he's behind a very long queue of wingers if he wants to pull on the All Blacks jersey (Naholo, Savea, Milner-Skudder, Dagg, Smith). Even guys like Cory Jane and Rene Ranger don't get a look in.

Huge disparity between the best teams and the worst teams in super rugby. The Force, Rebels and Sunwolves are all pretty poor, managing 5 wins between them last season. Seems hard to justify having a Japanese team ahead of a team from any of the pacific islands join super rugby after the Sunwolves got 80 points put on them at home to the Hurricanes, who weren't even at full strength.

I have to say the Tahs have got some breakdown kings in their first half. Agree with Stroudos that the Reds vs Sharks had a few questionable head shots in there, having just done a coaching course those look awful close to Red cards under the new directives.

A lot of head-hunting in that Reds v Sharks game. Did they not get the memo about refs clamping down on this? Karmichael Hunt practically knocked a bloke out with a head-shot and still looked surprised to be carded for it..... How come I have never heard of James Low(e?) of the Chiefs? Looks a right bloody handful.
