Sebastien Chabal takes on the All Blacks

#ThrowbackThursday The time Sebastien Chabal was baying for blood against the All Blacks, and got it!Long live the Caveman. #tbt

A quick look back to 2007 and Sebastien Chabal making an impact against the All Blacks, who he couldn’t wait to get stuck into. During the Haka he made it clear that he was baying for blood, and after putting in a huge tackle on Chris Masoe in the first Test, he then took out Ali Williams.

Jerry Collins was able to get a good shot in on Chabal too, but it was the Caveman who was the most talked about, despite France being thumped 42-11 the first week, and 61-10 the second.

This a few months before the famous Rugby World Cup Quarter Final in Cardiff though, where Chabal and France had the last laugh that year.

I was quite surprised Nallet didn't take the chalice when Chabal disappeared... Similar appearance PLUS the ability to play some decent rugby..... Or maybe that was the problem...

Oddly enough I think a Chabal is actually what the French team is missing. He was a poor, poor player, but he gave an image and an aura to a team that today is severely lacking in character. For all his flaws, sometimes teams need iconic figures like Chabal to rally around.

I think sometimes he was picked simply for the aura his hair and beard carried. Mr Unsubtle, flailing elbows, knees and a stare that could freeze fire. No doubt a very talented physical ball player, he was up there with the best ball carriers of his era, but I always got the feeling that rugby was not a natural game for him... unless he was ploughing over the top of people!

you better back it up when you react to the Haka like that...And back it up he did. Chabal was seen as overrated by many French fans, and it was kind of true, but I have a lot of respect for him. He was intelligent enough to make the most of his career on a financial/media level and he definitely wasnt afraid of anyone on the pitch.
