Ulster Rugby’s latest signing, Zac Ward is already a part of provincial folklore before his first BKT URC season.
Son of former Ulster standout Andy, the Olympic 7s hero has a unique history with the province dating back to his father’s playing days.
Playing a key role in Ulster’s only European Cup victory to date back in the 1998/99 season, the Whangārei born Ward snr enjoyed the unforgettable experience of having to leave his team’s quarterfinal clash with Toulouse midmatch.
Getting rushed to hospital by a police escort, Ward snr joined his wife Wendy in the hospital for the birth of their son Zac!
Releasing a statement at the time, Andy said, “I left with the police and made it from Ravenhill to Lagan Valley in just 13 minutes.
“Wendy is just absolutely perfect, and Zac is as good as gold everything is perfect,’ said the proud dad last night.”
Ulster would go on to defeat Stade Francais in the semi-final before downing Colomiers in the final.
Ahead of what will be a jam packed season under new head coach Richie Muprhy, Ulster fans will be hoping Zac can translate his Olympic 7s form to the XV-a-side game.
